Application filed April 27, 1915. Serial No. 24,329.
2 0 all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, GEonoE Lawson GREEN, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Newark, in the county of Inclependence and State of Arkansas, have in-' vented a new and useful Tool-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to tool holders, and aims to provide a novel and improved means for adjustably attaching the shank of a tool to the end of a handle or standard, whereby the tool may be readily attached to and detached from the handle or standard, and may beset at various positions relative to the handle or standard.
It is also within the scope of the invention to provide a device of the nature indicated which is extremely simple, compact and inexpensive in construction, and which is thoroughly practical and eflicient in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details or" construction.hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope oi what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved tool holder. F ig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3, and illustrating the shank of the tool in the same position that it occupies in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1 and illustrating the shank in another position.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a sleeve or ferrule 1 adapted to be slipped over the end of the standard or handle 2 and to be secured thereon in any suitable manner. The part 2 is to be taken as an arbitrary one, since it may be the handle of a hand implement, or the standard of a cultivator, it being understood that the sleeve 1 may be attached to various objects to which the tool or implement is to be attached.
The sleeve 1 is. provided at its free end openings 4, the said sides being flush with orricn Patented Dec. 21 8, 1915.
are in alinement, and this is also true of the openings 6 and 7, and said openings are of smaller area than the respective walls of the 9 head 3. A set screw 8 is threaded through one of the other side walls of the head 3 which is flush with the sleeve 1.
The openings of the head 3 are adapted.
through the openings 4, the shank 9 will be arranged at right angles with respect to the sleeve 1 and member 2, and by moving the shank 9 longitudinally of the sleeve 1, the notches 11 will be engaged by the relatively wide portions 12 of those sides of the heads 3 having the openings 4:, and the set screw 8 may then be tightened to clamp the shank 9 in place. The shank 9 is thus rigidly secured to the sleeve 1. WVhen the set screw 8 is loosened, the shank 9 may be readily withdrawn, and the shank 9 may be fastened to the sleeve 1 in alinement therewith. When it is desired to have the shank 9 project longitudinally from the sleeve 1, the end of the shank is inserted through the openings 7 and 6 of the head 3, as seen in Fig. 3, where by the relatively wide portions 13 of the respective walls of the head 3 will engage the notches 11 of the shank when the set screw 8 is tightened, and this will hold the shank 9 firmly in place.
With the present device, it is thus possible I to readily apply and remove the tool, and to hold the tool at various positions relative ,to the-handle or standard 2, in order that the holder will be serviceable and convenient in use.
Since the various holders may be employed for various purposes as will be evident to those familiar in the art, it is not deemed necessary to illustrate or describe a specific use of the holder since the application of the holder for varlous uses will be obvious. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is The combination with a tool holder comprising a sleeve having a hollow cubedike Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents eachtby addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
sertible through eitherthe first rnentioned or second mentioned openings and having notches for the engagement of the respective walls of said head.
, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
