Application filed January 2, 1915. Serial No. 199.
T0 (.tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SIDNEY Conway BEACH, 51a, and Josnri-r B. IIAGAN, J11, citizens of the United States, residing at Huntington, in the county of Cabell, State of West VirginiL, have invented a new and useful Gas-Burner, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in gas burners, one object of the invention being the provision of gas burner adapted to be mounted in a boiler frame, preferably in the door thereof, the burner being provided with a longitudinally adjustable air regulating element and with a frame supported gasdirecting member.
A further object of the present invention, is the provision of a gas burner of this type in which the carrying part is provided with a frame adapted for attachment to a boiler or furnace door, said frame being provided with an open yoke to which is adjustably connected the gas directing member, while simportedby the carrying part is an adjustable air regulating element, the gas directing member and the air regulating element being adjustable in the same longitugas.
A still further object of the invention, is the provision of a burner of this character which is simple, inexpensive and durable in construction, and which is readily applied for use. u
With the foregoing and other objectsin view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made Within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a side elevation of the complete burner showing the same properly applied to the door of a boiler or furnace. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the complete burner 7201 86. Fig. 3 is an end View taken from the out let end of the burner. Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the complete burner.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a main carrying part, which is rectangular in cross section and is provided Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Bee. 238, 129 15.
. two yoke arms 5 which support a circular collar 6 carrying a set screw 7 adapted t hold a cylindrical gas directing member 8 adyustably in the collar 6. The gas-directing member 8 is provided with a chamber 9 having a gas inlet 10, and embodies a perforated gas outlet portion 11, which is disposed coaxially with respect to the carrying part 1.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the gas directing member 8 may be adjusted longitudinally within the collar 6 so that the outlet portion 11 thereof may be moved to or form the carrying part 1, thus to regulate the distance therebetween.
In order to provide a means for varying the space between the inlet end of the carrying part 1 and the gas outlet portion 11 of the member 8 and thus .0 regulate the mixture of air and gas, an air regulating element in the form of a sleeve 12 fits slidably within the carrying part 1, a set screw 13 being provided to lock the sleeve 12 in adjusted positions.
Gas is supplied through apipe l tto the chamber 9 of the as directing member 8 and passes through the perforated outlet portion 11 thereof toward the part 1 and the sleeve 12-, the blast of gas having a tendency to entrain the air and mingle therewith within the sleeve 12 and the part 1, so that the flame at the outlet end of the part 1 will be continuous and produce the desired results when natural or artificial gas is used in the generation of steam in a boiler.
It has been found in practice, that the best results are attained when the space between the sleeve 12 and the member 8 is open and when the member 8 is axially unincumbered.
What is claimed is:
1. A gas burner including a rectangular tubular carrying part having an outstanding flange, two arms carried by said flange and extending in an opposite direction to the tubular part, a circular collar carried by said arms, a setscrew carried by the collar, a cylindrical gas directingmember retained by the screw and mounted in the collar and having a perforated gas outlet projected to- Ward the carrying part, a rectangular air regulating element fitting slidably Within the carrying part, and a set screw for locking the air regulating element in adjusted positions.
2. A gas burner comprising a tubular carrying part provided With forwardly projecting arms supporting a collar; a sleeve adjustable longitudinally in the carrying part and guided by the arms; a tubular gas supplying member adjustable longitudinally in the collar, the gas supplying memberbeing spaced from the sleeve, and the arms being spaced circumferentially toadinit air into the sleeve between the sleeve and the gas supplying member; means coacting With the collar and With the gas supplying inemher to hold the gas supplying member'in adjusted positions; and means coacting with the carrying part and With the sleeve to hold the sleeve in adjusted positions.
In testimony that We claim the. foregoing as our own, We have hereto afiixed our signatures in the presence of twowitnesses;
SIDNEY CONWAY BEACH, JR. JOSEPH B. HAGAN, JR.
