Be it known that I, JACOB E. COLEMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at` Clarksburg, in the county of Harrison and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gras-- Burners, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention consists in an improvement ingas burners, particularly adapted to the combustion of fuel gas, and has for its object to provide a burner of simple and cheap construction adapted tol provide for complete, accurate and economical mixture with air and effectiveV combustion of the fuel gas. It also has in view todeliver mixed gas and air to the combustion chamber of a furnacein a manner best adapted to effect complete combustion and utilization of fuel for quick generation of heat.
The invention comprises a mixing charnber composed of a gas vand air receiving head, a delivery conduit, and a terminal flare plate, constructed and adapted to operate in the manner more particularly hereinafter described.

Referring to the drawings, the burner as a whole, which is shown in operative position within the furnace of a boiler setting of any usual or preferred construction, comprises a head 2 and a gas mixing conduit 3, or pipe, provided at its inner terminal end with the flare plate 4.
The head 2, which may be conveniently made in the form of a casting, is provided at its front end with a threaded opening 5 into which is introduced a gas supply pipe 6 with, if desired, a reducing bushing 7. An innerl gas pipe 8 extends from such bushing connection inwardly through the open interior 9 of the head 2 and therebeyond, terminating within the conduit 3 at a suitable .distance to eifect'suction of. the atmospheric air in the manner of an injector. j
An advantage 1n using a bushing connection is that various sized pipes may be used for the gas supply, depending on the volume,pressure, etc., also the size of the boiler,` so that the size of the pipe can be changed as desired.
One yor both sides of the head 2 extends laterally by air inlet portions l0, each of which is provided with anA air regulating or closing plate or damper 11 adjustably secured tothe end 'of the hollow air inlet portion l0 by an adjustable securing thumb screw,12. By means of such mounting, Athe damperv plate 11 at either side may be ixedly located at any desired position, either entirely open, or partly open, or-entirely closed, whereby to regulate the amount of incoming air, orto entirely shut olf the air supply.,V The outer face of the air inlet extension l0,
l in an voutside or exposed position, and subject to air drafts or wind pressure, the dampers may be set with respect thereto so as to very accurately control the amount of incoming air.v Y .A
Thus should currents of air be blowing against one side only of the mixing head, the damper on such side may be partially or entirely closed and the damper on the other side partially or entirely opened, or the damper at each side may be opened more or less for exact regulation of the air supply. I thus avoid the objections of a varying supply of air, due to the changeable outside wind pressure.
The Hare plate 4 as shown may be made as an integral part of the pipe 3, partly severed, flattened out and bent up across the inner end thereof, leaving a narrow emission slot 13 which is annularly arranged around the upper and side portions of pipe 3 and between the outer end of said pipe and the Hare plate. The Width of such slot between the end of the-.pipe and theinner face of the plate may be accurately adjusted to any desired opening with regard to the volume to be produced and its degree of expansion from the terminal lof the burner.
:As thus-constructed, air in exactly vregulated proportion will be drawn in by the gas jet in the manner of -an injector and the air and ,gas will become thoroughly mixed within the conduit', and especially as the mixture is projected against the flare ,plate 4. Thereupon, .themixture will escape through the slot 13 inthe form of Ya partly annular, lvery thin sheet `or body of thoroughly vmixed gas and air, which will be projected outwardly around kthe vend of the burner in the form of a fan-tail jet.
The combustion of the mixture will occur at the outer fringe of the jet inthe manner indicated vat a in Fig. `6.
I claim:
1. A gas burner consisting of ,a hollow head having loppositely arranged air inlet openings, eachrof said 'openings'being provided with an individually adjustable damper and a burner pipe having a flare plate formed of a partly severed iiattened portion of the lpipe'bent up acrossthe open end of the pipe with a narrow intervening annular slot. v
2. A gas burner .consisting of a hollow head having oppositely arranged lair inlet openingsfan air controlling damper pivotallv secured on the face of each air opening by a securing set screw, and a 'burner pipe having a flare Aplate formed of a partly severed flattened `portion of the pipe bent up across the open end of the pipe with a narrow intervening annular slot. v
3. A .gas burner consisting of a mixing chamber having an extended burner pipe provided with =a terminal flare plate, and voppositely arranged air inlet openings each having an individually adjustable controlling damper, and agas inlet conduitfextending through the mixing chamber into the burner pipe. j
4. A gas burner consisting of a hollow `head having laterally arranged air inlet openings each provided with an individually adjustable damper,` a burner pipe extending from the hollow head and provided with an integral flare plate extending across the open end thereof with `an intervening narrow annular slot, and a gas inlet conduit extending through the-hollowhead into the burner pipe.
5. A vgas burner consisting of a hollow head having oppositely arranged air inlet openings, an air controlling rdamper pivotally secured on the 'face of 'each air opening by a securing set screw, a burner pipe extending from the hollow head and provided tion of the'pipe bent up across the open end Y of the pipe with slot. j.
