Description

ISRAEL F. BROWN, or New LoNnoN, coNi'Ee'rIoUr.
IMPROVEMENT IN LATHE-TOOL SUPPORTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,545, dated July 4, 1871.
To all Iwhom it 'may concern:
Be it known' that l, Isl-AEL F. BROWN, oi the city and count-jv' of N ew Loudon and Starte ot' Gonnei'aticut, have invented an Improved Lathelool Supporter and do herebv declare the saine to befulljv described in the tollowingspecilication and represented in the aceoinpan'vii1g drawing, of which- Figure l is a top view; Fig. 2, a side eleva tion; F'g. 3, an end view; Fig. 4, a. longitudinal section 5 and Fig. 5, a transverse section.
The article in question is for use in the toolpost of alathe, and is to serve as al hed for the support 0f a tool formed oiLA a triangular prisinatic bar ground at one end to a cutting-edge.
In the drawing, A denotes a straight block or short bar oi' metal having three series, B C D, ot' angular projections e c erected on its upper edge, al 1d fori ned as shown. The angular grooves or spaces of the outermost projeetir'ins decline alittle toward the gr i oves ot' the middle proj eetion, and it will be observed that the projection e of each series is extended above the others about The projections a, theredouble their heights.
fore, constitute abutiuents to support the tool against the pressure in a transverse direction to which it is subjected while in the act of turning an article in a lathe. The grooves or spaces hetween the projections serve as sockets to receive the angular edge ofthe tool. The large toolpost clamp-screw,n'holding the tool in place, is to bear on it directly over the middle series C of projections, and, in consequence of the grooves or spaces between these latter projections being a little lower than those corresponding grooves oi" the externa-l projections, the tool will he set so irnily down as to be prevented from chat tering' while in action.
rlhe lathe-tool supporter made as described, riz., as consistingot the barAand the three series ot' abutments e e a', and lower projections b o7 arranged with and extended from such bar, as and for the purpose as specied.
