Be it known that l, Lans Mouais Mocrinu, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Hartford. in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful :improvement in Automatic Door-Releasing Apparatus, of which the followingl is a speciiication.
lt is desirable to have the doors of school buildings, theaters, churches, halls and like places of public assemblage and entertainment, tastened in such manner that they can be instantly opened outward in case of lire or panic.
rl"his invention relates to an apparatus which is so designed that the doors of such places can from diilerent localities, without effort, be instantly released and opened.
The object oi' the invention is to provide apparatus by means oli' which one or more doors that are normally held closed will be automatically released and swung open whenever pressure is applied to them from the interior, as when persons push against them, or when a button at a distancel is pressed. or a ire alarm is sounded. VThis object is attained by covering considerable surface oi' the doors with push plates that when pressed against will close an electrical circuit to release the retaining latches and bolts, which circuit may be extended any distance and provided with push buttons at various stategic localities, or may be connected by relay with a. lire alarm circuit, in such manner that when a button is pushed or the alarm is set in action the latches and bolts will bereleasedthe same as when the doors are pushed against.-
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings shows in elevation a double door provided with latch and bolts which are designed to be released by pressure on push plates carried by the doors, or bythe push of a button, or by the souncing of an alarm, the electrical connections for accomplishing this being indicated in diagram. Fig. 2 shows a section of one oiE the doors taken through the push plate and the electrically released latch-catch. Figy shows a view ot' the back and Fig. 4 a view of the side of contacts which maybe arranged in the hanging jamb of the door casing to insure the continuity of the circuit Vbetween the casing and the door when the latter is closed. rilhe invention is illustrated as applied to a set of double doors l and 2, which are hung in the usual way so as to open outwardly. rlhe door 1 may. as shown, be provided at top and bottom with retaining bolts 3. l ic bolts illustrated are of the type shown in U. S. Patent No. 946,764, January 1S, 1910. Such a bolt is normally retracted. into its frame 4 by a spring 5 and is forced outward into a socket in the door casing by the engagement with the pin 6, which ei;- tends out from the bolt through an inclined slot 7, of the edge of the opposing door when the doors are closed. Vhen the door 2 is released the springs draw in the bolts that hold the door l, and the slots turn the pins so they tend to throw open the door 2. To further aid inthrowing open the doors when the latch and bolts are released pushers consisting of a socket S, ball 9 and springl 10 may be placed in the casing' jambs so as toV thrustV `against the edges of the hanging stiles of the doors.
@ne of the doors, 2, is provided with a common form of latch l1 and knob 12 so as to enable the door to be opened in the customary way. The other door, l, is provided with an electrically released catch 13 for retaining the latch. This device .is of the type which forms the subject of U. S. Patent No. 538,127. April 23, 1895.` Such a catch is piyotall.T mounted in its trame l-l and is normally held rigid by a rocker 15` that is engaged by a trip 16 that is disengaged by the pull of the magnets` 17 when the circuit in which the magnets are connected is closed.`
On the face of each door, and covering considerable surface is a push plate 18 that is guided by pins 19 and is pushed out by sure against the push plates.
springs 20. These plates carry contact studs 21 that are connected with each other by means of the Wire 22. A ivire 23 connects one of the studs 21 on the door 1 with one terminal of the catch releasing field magnet 17. In the doors back of the studs are contacts 24E which by Wires 25 and 26 are connected With one pole of the batteryor other source of electrical energy 27. The other pole of the battery is connected by a Wire 28 with the other terminal of' the catch magnets 17. When either ofthe plates is pushed in by pressure against them the power cir-V cuit is closed and the magnets cause the release of the catchV and the freeing of the latch so the doors Will of themselves swing open or will be pushed open by the pres- The circuit may also be closed to accomplish the same result by pushing buttons 29, of which there may be any number placed at any desired distant locality. The circuit Wires may also be led to an automatic closer consisting ot a magnet 30 in a firealarm circuit 31, and a circuit closer 32 that is caused to close the door circuit when the magnet 30 is energized by current incident to the operation ot' the alarm.

rBy means of this apparatus pressure against the doors in an outward direction, the pushing of a button, or the sounding of an alarm will instantly cause the doors to swing fully open, and permit free exit therethrough.
The invention claimed is;
1. rllhe combination with a door. of an electrically released catch carried thereby, :fixed and movable contacts vcarried by the door and normally held disengaged, and an open electric circuit including the catchl operating mechanism and the fixed and movable contacts, said circuit being adapted to be closed by pressure applied to the movable contacts.V
2. The combination with a door of an electrically released. catch, fixed and movable contacts carried by the door, springs for normally holding the movable contacts out of engagement with the fixed contacts, a plate adapted to be pushed for causing the movable contacts to engage with the fixed contacts, and anelectric circuit including the catch operating mechanism and the lopies of this patent may be obtained for Afive cents each, by addressing the omimrssoner'of Patents;
