ANNUNCIATOR.
`SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters P Application led January 1G, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLEs H. DOWDEN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Annunciator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention .relates to certain new and useful improvements in annunciators used in hotels, with burglar alarms, and other electric signaling devices.
rlhe object of my invention is to provide a new and improved annunciator which is so constructed that the signa-ls disappear automatically after they have been exposed to view and require no special manipulation by the operator to remove them, but which improved ann-unciator can also be so adjusted that the signals remain visible until they are shifted at the instrument.
The invention consists in the construction of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hcreinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to theaecompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which a longitudinal view of my improved annuneiator is shown, parts being broken out and others being in section, and the electric circuits being shown.
The electro-magnet A is connected with the line-wires b and with the line-wires c, the said wires b and c being connected with the battery D or other electric generator in the usual manner. The armature E is pivoted at one end of the magnet, and is provided at its upper end with a lug, F, having an aperture, G, through which a pin, H, passes from a lever, J, pivoted on standards I on the frame K, on which the magnet A is held. A spring-strip, L, is interposed between the armature E and an end piece of the frame K, and prevents the armature from swinging too far from the magnet. A weight, M, is secured on one end of the lever J, and on the other end a plate or disk, N, is secured, on which a number, letter, or other sign or mark is produced. On said lever J a contact-piece, O, is secured, which when the lever is raised is in Contact with the contact-piece P, connected with the wire c and held on the annunciator, the lever atent No. 351,099, dated October 19,1886.
Serial Ne..188,80`l. (Nomodcl.) l
J being connected with the wire c', as shown. The casing is provided with an opening, Q, through which the disk or plate N can be seen when raised, as shown in dotted lines. The wire c is provided with aswitch, It, and pushbutton WV, and the wire I) is provided with the push-pin S.
rlhe operation is as follows: Vhen the circuit of the wire b is closed in any suitable inanner, the armature E is attracted, and, acting on the pin H, swings the disk or plate N,with the lever J, upward, so that the said disk can be seen through the opening Q in the easing. The disk remains raised as long as the circuit is not broken; but as such a break is produced 6 either by releasing the push-pin or closing the door or window, the lever J and the disk N drop, thus requiring the attendant to note the number or other niark on the disk as long as the said disk is raised. In certain cases this is not desirable, and it is necessary that the disk shall remain raised until it is released byr the attendant. Vhen this is desired, the switch R is closed, and when the lever J is swung up by the closing of the line b the contact-pieces O and I) come in contact and close the circuit in the line c. The disk N remains raised un til the switch Ris closed, oruutil the button XV is operated, which is so constructed as to break the circuit when it is pressed. A bell on au eXtra circuit is to be connected with the battery, and connected with the line-wires in such a manner that the bell is sounded when the disk N is raised.
For burglar-alarms, &e., the push-pin S is arranged to be operated by a door, window, Ste.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent` l. The combination, with an electro-magnet and its armature having a recessed lug, of a balanced lever having a signal-disk and a pro jecting pin placed in the recess of the armature-lug, with two separate electric wires connected with the electro-magnet, o1" which wires one is a long circuit, including the doors and windows, and the other a short circuit, which can be opened or closed by a switch, and provided with a push-button and a contact-point, substantially as herein shown and described.
