Description

UNITED y STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
GEORGE L. WITSIL, OF BEVERLY, JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AN'D THOMAS T. BATES, ASSIGNORS TO THEMSELVES LIAMS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
AND BENJAMIN J. WIL- IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,525, dated June 27, 187`1.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. W1Tsn.,of
' Beverly, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure I is an elevation of my improvement, showing a handle and the corrugated washing device on its lower end. Fig. II is a central vertical section, and Fig. III is a bottom view of the disk.
Corresponding letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to machines which are used for washing clothes or cloths 5 and it consists in the construction of a disk for such machines, which has formed in it an air-tight chamber, and which may either be used in connection with the lever of a washing-machine, or it may be used in a suitable tub by taking hold of the handle and operating it by the hand.
In constructing devices of this kind I use wood, or preferably metal of any kind which will not corrode, and which will not stain or otherwise injure the clothes with which it comes in contact. When the portion A of the deviceis made of .metal it should be of a form similar to that shown in the drawing, and of sufficient thickness to prevent its being bent by use. It is not essential, however, that the particular form shown should be employed, as any form which will leave the cavity in the interior of the disk for the reception and retention of air will be found to work well. There are advantages, however, due to this form, which are, that it will have a tendency to change the position of the material which is .be-
ing operated upon at each descending stroke, and at the same time such material will be forced into the narrower portion ci" the disk, and further changed in position by its upward movement.
l The lower surface of this disk, whether made of 1 wood or metal, should have its lower edge rounded, as shown, so as not to injure the clothes. To the upper portion of the disk A a handle, B, is attached, which may have the form shown, for the purpose of adapting it to use byhand; or it may have a handle or standard, the upper end of which is so constructed as that it may be attached to a lever, which will allow it to be used in any ordinary machine which is provided with such lever.
ber, and this Vis important, as it enables the disk at each downward stroke to carry with it a quani from any dirt which may have been lodged there.
As the air is expelled there is a partial vacuum formed within the disk, which very much facili tates the change of the position of the material which is being operated upon, as when such partial vacuum exists the atmospheric pressure upon the outside causes the material to adhere to the mouth of the disk with considerable force.
This device is capable of various uses, such as washing common clothing, cloths 0f different kinds, wool, cotton, and various other fibrous substances. y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A disk or cone, to be used in washing clothing and other substances, constructedv with an airtight chamber, asV shown, in its interior surface, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name presence of two subto this specification in the scribing witnesses.
GEO. L. WITSIL.
Witnesses: l). l. HoLLowAY, A. RUPPERT.
Should the disk A be made of wood it should beso formed as to haye in it the air-chamu
