RIFLE-CLEANER.
Speciication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec.. ML, i915.
.Application led September 8, 1915. Serial No. 49,548.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE Yosr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenwich, in the county of Fairiield and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful improvements in Rifle-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gun cleaners and more particularly to rifle cleaners.
rlhe principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, efficient in operation and which embodies a swiVe-led head permitting the cleaning cloth or rag to follow the rifling while the rod is held against rotation.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which z- Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the head removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. l is a detail transverse sectional view taken on the line 1 -4L of Fig. l.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, l represents the cleaning rod which is reduced at one end as shown at 2 to produce a limiting and supporting shoulder 3. At the terminal the rod is further reduced to produce a shoulder 4 and beyond the shoulder is threaded to receive a locking nut 5. Mounted upon the rod for free rotation and having one end resting against the shoulder 3 is a cloth holding head 6 having a longitudinal slot 7 of considerably greater width than the diameter of the rod beyond the shoulders 3 and 4f, so as to produce openings upon opposite sides of the rod for the reception of the cloth. This head is reduced at both ends on a taper and is held in place by the washer 8 which is firmly held in position against the shoulder 4 by the locking nut 5. When the cloth is inserted in the slot 7 on either or both sides, preferably both, of the rod l, and the rod inserted into the gun the cloth will t the rifling and even though the rod is held against rotation in the hand of the operator the head will freely rotate and cause the cloth to follow the rifling instead of riding over the same. Any suitable type of handle may be rigidly secured to the rod and, if desirable, ball bearings may be interposed between the head and shoulder 3 and Washer 8 so as to facilitate rotation of these parts. As bearings of this character are old and well-known in the art it is not deemed necessary to illustrate them herein. By providing a swiveled head of this type the mounting of the cloth for rotation with the riiiing insures the proper removal of rust and lead from the lands. Frequently when a single slot is used in cleaning rods the cloth or rag gets entirely upon one side of the rod, thus bringing the rod into direct Contact with the riiiing and causing it to wear or scratch the same, thereby damaging the rifle and inj uring its shooting qualities. By providing a head of this character where the cloth can be put in upon both sides of the rod this difliculty is obviated and at the same time the rotation of the cloth is assured.
Vhat is claimed isz- A gun cleaner comprising a rod having a reduced terminal, separated shoulders formed at the reduced terminal, a longitudinally slotted head seated on one of the shoulders for free rotation and a nut and washer seated against the opposite shoulder for holding the head in position, said slot being of greater width than the diameter of the reduced portion of the rod so as to produce cloth receiving openings upon opposite sides of the rod. l
In testimony whereof I atliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
