Specification of Lettera Patent. Patented Dene. lid, 111L915.
Application filed May 21, 1914. Serialitto. 840,087.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. FRYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to safety razors, andmore particularly to that style or type of razor in which the handle and blade-holder are disposed approximately in alinement with, instead of at right angles to, each other. It .proposes certain hereinafter-described improvements in or relating to the construction of the two members or elements specified, whereby the implement, as a whole, is simplified and rendered less expensive to manufacture, while at the same time, it ofiers a firmer and more efi'ective grip.
Also, the invention comprehends an .1m-
proved form of clip which may be readily applied to or removed from the holder and which, when in place, will serve to accurately position the blade upon the holder and retain it against movement when in use.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying draWing, where-,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the razor complete; Fig. 2is an enlarged, fragmental longitudinal section on line 2-7-2, Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and 4c aretransverse sections on lines 3 3, and 4.-4, Fig. 2, respectively; and Fig; 5 is a plan view of the blade.
in said drawing, 5 and 6 indicate the handle and holder memblars of the razor, and 7 the blade, the part last mentioned being of the well-known, double-edged, wafer type. The parts 5and 6 are arranged substantially in alinement-with each other, as shown, and are preferably integrally connected; they may be constructed from any suitable spring metal and made in any desired sizes.
\ The handle element is so shaped as toenable it to ofier an improved grip, as has hit already been stated, and it is further shaped in such a way as to enable it to be used with equal facility with either hand. To this end, it is formed with an elon ated, outer terminal portion or heel 5', the ongitudinal point the holderbody is enlarged or widened I laterally in opposite directions to produce the finger-pieces 5 Beyond said fingerp1eces,the holder is provided at oppositev ing heel edges, thus conforming, somewhat,
to the shape of the finger pressed thereagainst, while the front edges of said finger.-
pieces are convexed, or outwardly curved.
Beyond the barrel 5 the handle. and
holder are connected together by, the flat; in-
The said holder is provided at its oppositeedges with longitudinal series of teeth 6 which act in the usual way as the guards, and are given a slight inclination, as shown in Figs. 3 and 1. The waferblade 7 is disposed against the holder, and is of sufficient width, to enable its edges to project past the bases of the teeth, its retention being effected by means of spurs 6 that are struck up from the enlarged end teeth of both, series and are engageable in notches 7' formed in theend edges of the blade.
To secure the blade to the holder, there is preferably employed a spring metal clip 8, which, in the construction illustrated, comprises a straight, or strip-like body portion 8 and a terminal hook 8 the for-liner beini arranged against the ,front face (of the lade and the latter designed to fit over the back-of the holder, as depicted in Figs. 1 and 2. The clip body 8' is sufficiently long to project beyond the rear end of the holder and across the connecting portion or extension 6, while its width is such as to enable it to. fit between the pairs ofspurs 6. The aforesaid extension 6 is formed upon its opposite edges. with forwardly and inwardly bent tongues 6*, which thus engage the projecting end ofthe clip body and, by reason of their inherent resilience, exert a clamping pressure thereon, a similar action being exerted by the hook 8 against the holder.
gagement of its rear terminal by the spring tongues 6 while the clip itself will serve to retain the blade in position, being assisted to this end by the engagement of the spurs 6* in its notches 7. The integral connection of the holder and handle elements enables them to be constructed from a single blank of metal and at a single operation of the stamping or other press, thus reducing the cost of manufacture to a very considerable extent, While the particular shapes given the component members of the said handle enable the latter to fit either hand of the user and, consequently, to afiord a most satisfactory grip.
Having fully described my invention, I claim A safety razor comprising integrally-connected holder and handle elements arranged in axial alinement, said holder being provided adjacent its ends with pairs of spurs; a blade arranged against said holder and having notches in its end edges adjacent the corners thereof to receive said spurs; and a clip arranged against the front face of the blade and removably engaged at opposite ends with said holder for retaining said blade in lace.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing w'itnesses.
CHARLES H. FRYE.
