IMPROVEMENT IN COOKlNG-STOVES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,426, dated June 27,1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT GAss, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer, and in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cooking-Stoves; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and ex act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stove-front containing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line .70 w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the hearthslide, showing the arrangement therein of the damper; and Fig. 4: is an end elevation of the pivoted or hinged end of the said hearth-slide.

My invention is an improvement in slides or covers used forinclosing the ash-pits and draughtopenings of cooking-stoves, and also in the arrangement of the draught-damper; and it consists principally in the construction of the hinge for connecting the slide with the front of the stove and permitting the same to swing horizontally and radially outward over and upon the hearth, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified. It further consists in the construction of the supporting-strip and its combination with said slide, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth. It finally consists in the construction of the draught-damper and its arrangement within the hearth, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.

In the annexed drawing, A represents the front plate of a stove, having attached to and forming a part of the same, a hearth, B, and an ash-pit, 0, all of usual construction.

In order to afford free access to the front and lower sides of the grate the front plate is removed from the bottom of the ash-pit to or near the upper side of said grate, leaving an unusually large opening to be inclosed by the slide D, which, as seen in the drawing, conforms thereto in size and shape upon its lower and rear sides, and has a depth outward from said front plate and a height above the hearth sufficient to form within said slide, and independent of the ash-pit and space beneath the grate, a chamber, E, of considerable size, within which air for supplying the requirements of combustion may become heated before entering the fuel-chamber. As, from its size, the slide or cover D is not easily removed from or replaced upon the hearth, it has been found advantageous to so arrange the same as to permit it to be moved or slid to one side without becoming detached from the stove, for which purpose the following-described means are employed: A lug or ear, F, secured upon and projecting horizontally outward from one end of the slide, near its rear side, is provided with a cylindrical opening that extends vertically upward from its lower side, and receives a corresponding stud or pintle, G, which pintle is secured to and projects upward from the hearth B, the whole forming an axial bearing for said slide, and around which it swings. A lug, H, projecting horizontally outward from the front plate A over the ear F, prevents the latter from being disengaged from its pintle, except when the slide is swung outward beyond its usual position, ,in which event a notch, f, formed within said ear, and corresponding in size and shape to said lug, is brought immediately beneath and receives the same when said ear is raised.

By this arrangement the slide is securely attached to the stove, except when intentionally removed therefrom, and may be freely moved over or upon the hearth, so as to cover or uncover the opening contained therein without any care or attention, such as would be required were said slide connected with said stove by its weight only.

In order to relieve the hinge from the entire weight of the slide when the same is swung outward until its front vertical edge is beyond the hearth, a bearing-strip, I, is secured upon the under side of said slide, near its front, and, extending rearward and downward, has its lower edge brought in a line with the surface of said hearth so as to cause it to rest upon the latter and support said slide when the same is moved outward. The draught-openings 7c are formed in and through the bottom of a rectangular recess, K, which is sunk below the surface of the slide D, near its front edge, and are covered by means of a slide, L, of usual form, the depth of said recess being such as to bring said slide L and its operating-knob l entirely below the surface of said slide or cover D, and permit the latter to be used for supporting cooking-utensils Without in any manner interfering with the adjustment of the draught.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The means employed for pivoting the slide D to or upon the stove-front so as to permit the same to he slid or moved forward and to one side upon the hearth B, consisting of the hinge F provided With a vertical opening and with the recess f, in combination with the pintle G and lug H, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
