Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. RnU'rTnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clear-field, in the county of Clear-field and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a mortise door lock which has only one lock bolt and which can be either locked or unlocked from the inside of the door without the use of a key or set from the inside of the door, without the use of a. key, so that the door can be opened from the outside by turning the outside knob and without the use of a key and set from the inside of the door without the use of a key, so that the door can be opened from the outside only with the use of a key. These objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the drawings 1 represents a suitable bolt casing inserted into the door and contained within said casing is a bolt, 2, the outer end portion of which is beveled in the usual manner and within said casing said bolt is provided with a beveled shoulder 3 upon one side. The rear end of the bolt is of considerable width and is provided adjacent its opposite sides with grooved cam slots 4 and with a longitudinally extending slot 5, which is placed substantially upon the longitudinal center of the bolt. Through the slot 5 passes a suitable shaft 6, and said shaft is provided throughout the greater portion of its length with a longitudinally extending V -shaped slot 7. Keyed upon said shaft and also within the casing 1 is a transversely arranged yoke 8 which yoke carries adjacent its opposite ends rollers 9, which rollers rest within cam slots 4. It will be obvious that from this construction no matter in which direction the shaft 6 is rotated one of the rollers 9 will bear against the rear end of its cam slot 4, while the Fig. 4 is a rear view of the comother will travel idly in its slot, and the bolt will be retracted. An inside knob 13 is fixed upon the sleeve 11 and an outside knob 14 is carried by a suitable sleeve 15. The inner end of the sleeve 15 is notched or slotted as shown at 16 and these slots are adapted to be engaged by a pin 17 when the shaft 6 is pushed inwardly.
A coil spring 18 arranged within the sleeve 15 bears at its outer end against the knob 14 and at its inner end against the shaft 6 and normally holds the pin 17 out of engagement with any of the slots 16. Consequently under normal conditions the knob 14 will turn loosely and without actuating the shaft 6 or retracting the bolt. The knob 14 however is provided with a suitable key-opening 19 and the inner end of the shaft 6 is provided with a slot 20, and a proper key may be passed through the opening 19 through the sleeve 15 and into cn 'agement with the slot 20 thereby enabling the shaft 6 to be turned by said key. But I have also arranged for the locking of the shaft 6 to the outer knob 14 by means of the pin 17 so that when so locked the door may be opened from either side. This locking device consists of a small disk 21 secured to the inner end of the shaft, said disk being provided with a circumferential groove 22 adjacent the shaft. Upon the outer end of the shaft 6 which is upon the inner side of the door is rotatably mounted said disk 21 having a circumferential groove 22 and notched as shown at 2%, said notch normally forming a continuation of the groove 7. lhe knob 13 has a tongue 12 which also extends into the groove 7 and by pushing inwardly upon the disk 21 the shaft 6 will slide with respect to the knob and the tongue 12 will rest in the groove 22. By then rotating the disk 21 the notch 22 will be thrown out of alinement with the groove 7 and the shaft locked against outer movement with respect to the knob 13. This movement also brings the pin 17 into engagement with one of the slots 16 of the sleeve 15, compressing the spring 18. The knob 1 1 is now locked to the shaft 6 11nd the door may be opened from either sic e.
It will be obvious from the above description'that I have provided a lock and operating means therefor which fulfils all of the objects previously specified.
What I claim is 1. I'n a device of the kind described a shaft having a groove, a yoke keyed upon said"shaft,va bolt having cam slots therein, rollers carried by the yoke andadapted to work in said slots and a spring for normally throwing said bolt outwardly, said bolt being provided with a longitudinal slot through which the shaft passes.
2. A lock of the kind described comprisinga shaft having a groove, a spring actu-,
ate d bolt, a shaftpassing loosely through the bolt, means carried by the shaft for re tracting the bolt upon turning of the shaft in either direction, a sleeve fitting loosely upon. said shaft and having a tongue fitting 7 said groove, a knob carried by said sleeve, a disk carried by the outer end ofthe shaft, a circumferential groove, a second sleeve, a knob carried by the second sleeve, said second sleeve being slotted at its inner end, and a pin carried by the shaft and adapted to engage said slots, said shaft being slidable with respect to both of. said sleeves, and
with respect to the bolt and yoke, said disk having a notch adapted to register with the groove of the shaft and a knob having a gongue adapted to enter the groove of the isk. V
