Be it known that I, ALBERT H.- D Von, va citizen of the United States, residing at Westeld, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Throat-Plate Supports for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to supports for throat-plates of sewing machines, and has for its object to provide detachable supporting means for interchangeable throatplates of various gages.
Vln the use of a multiple needle sewing machine it is frequentlydesired to vary the number or spacing of the needles and loopersaccording to the character of the work; and to such end needle clamps and looper carriers have been devised which permit the members supported thereby to be changed in number and spacing within a ,Y wide range of adjustment. The present improvements are adapted to provide rigid supporting means for throat-plates of any gage called for by changes in the stitching i`nechanism, and without change in the bed or frame of the sewing machine.
The improvements include a fiat sup- Y'portiiig bar detachably secured to the bed of a sewing machine and at the rear thereof j by any suitable means, said bar being provided with a longitudinally disposed rib or tongue adapted to fit within a transverse slot formed in the under face of the throatplate sect-ion and at the rear thereof. ,practice the supporting bar is secured in such manner that it may be given a slight longitudinal adjustment to properly position the throat-plate section, inasmuch as the latter is secured in fixed position upon the bar by means ofv suitable fastening screws.

lt will be seen that the throat-plate section and its supporting elements may readily be detached from each other and from the sewing machine frame, and that new throat-plate sections and supporting elements of different gages may be placed upon the bed of the machine without changing the form of the latter in any particular.
inasmuch as thc throat-plate is supported entirely from the rear of the sewing machine bed the loopers are unobstructed at the front of the machine and may readily be adjusted. And in obviating the necessity :for a throat-plate support rising from the bed at the front of the machine, binding attachments and the like may be used which deliver tape to the stitching mechanism from a point below the throat-plate, the tape being guided immediately over the source of supply. In suoli case the; work-plate remains unobstructed for the free passage of the work.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front perspective view of the improvements showing the same applied to a multiple needle sewing machine, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view from the under side of the improvements. F ig. 8 is a perspective view of the adjustable needle-guard block used in connection with the improvements.
The iinprovements are shown applied toa sewing machine provided with the bed A formed with the upright bearing members i and c which support lcoper-actuating shaft l. An eccentric` on shaft l is einbraced by a strap 2, and the latter is provided with a sleeve 3 adapted to receive a slide-'pin 4- which transmits motion to looper-carrier and the loopers 6, said loopers being adapted to coact with the needles 7 in the usual manner.
The bed A is provided with a third upright member b which, in conjunction with member a serves as a base for the suppoiting bar 8, the bar being detachably secured upon members a and o by any suitable means, preferably in such manner as to permit a slight longitudinal adjustment thereof. In the present embodiment of the invention the supporting bar is formed with theJ slots s adapted to receive fastening` screws 8X which enter suitable threaded apertures in the members o, Z), the heads of the screws being flush with, or below, the upper surface of the arm, as shown in Fig. 1. The bar 8 upon its upper face is provided with a longitudinal rib 9 adapted to fit within the transverse channel formed in the under face of the throat-plate section 10 and at the rear thereof. The throat-plate section is secured upon bar 8 by means of screws 11 which enter apertures 12 formed in said bar. A portion of the bar is cut away intermediate its ends to afford a clearance space for the feed-dog 13.
It will be seen that the bar 8 affords a rigid support for the rear of throat-plate section 10, and that the front edge of the throat-plate is supported by two forwardly projecting arms 11. Each arm 11 is provided with a transverse rib 1-1X which abuts the front edge of bar 8 and, in conjunction with fastening screw 15, serves to hold the arm firmly against lateral or endwise movement. The free end of each arm is inturned and bent upwardly to provide lugs or seats 16 upon which the forward portion of the throat-plate rests. In the present instance each arm is provided with a flange 17 which abuts the outer side of the bed-projection a or b as the case may be.
Each arm 11 is provided upon its lower face and near its free end with a transverse boss 18 adapted to receive one end of a needle-guard supporting rod u19, which receives the apertured blocks 20 formed with grooves 21 which afford needle-deflecting surfaces. Each block 2O is provided with a clamping screw-stud 22 which enters a longitudinal groove 23 formed in rod 19 whereby the block is held fixed against movement upon said rod. Clamping screws 24, received within suitable apertures formed in the arms 141 and at right angles to each boss 18, serve to hold rod 19 in its adjusted position.
It is manifest that the form and arrangement of arms 11 and supporting bar 8 may be varied, and that the invention is not limited to the precise embodiment thereof herein shown and described.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what 1 claim herein is 1. rlhe combination with the bed and the throat-plate of a sewing machine, of a detachable supporting bar secured to the bed and adapted to receive the rear under face of the throat-plate, and two forwardly projecting arms detachably secured to the under face of the supporting bar and adapted to serve as rigid supporting members for the forward portion of the throat-plate.
2. rThe combination with the bed and the throat-plate of a sewing machine, of a detachable supporting bar secured to the bed and adapted to receive the rear under face of the throat-plate, and two forwardly projecting arms detachably secured to the under face of the supporting bar, saidarms having upturned ends underlying the forward portion of said throat-plate and having transverse guide-ribs in contact with the supporting bar.

The combination with the bed and throat-plate of a sewing machine, of a detachable supporting bar secured to the bed and provided with a longitudinal guide-rib, a throat-plate formed with a channel inl its rear under face to receive the guide-rib of said supporting bar, and two forwardly Vprojecting arms detachably secured to the under face of the supportingbar, said arms having upturned ends underlying the for-' to receive a throat-plate, forwardly project- I ing arms detachably secured to the supporting bar and adapted to serve as rigid supporting members for said throat-plate, "a bearing boss upon each arm, a supporting rod within said bearing bosses, means for maintaining said rod in fiXed position, and" a nleedle-guard adjustably secured upon said roc.
