Be it known that I, DOMENIOO GAJ TONE, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los- Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments ing is a specification.
This inventionrelates to new and useful improvements in sewing machine attachments and more particularly to an attachment adapted to be combined with an edge guide, and especially intended for the use of tailors or garment makers in stitching lap seams and in work of similar character.
The ultimate purpose of the invention is to provide a presser foot which effectually prevents sagging or wrinkling of the cloth and which assures of the line of stitching being perfectly parallel to the edge by which the cloth is guided, the use of basting for this purpose in lap seam work being rendered unnecessary. In carrying out the foregoing object the invention resides in certain novel features of structure and arrangement, and more particularly in an improved presser foot which may be efficiently used for all widths of seams, an adjustable presser part being provided for this purpose and employed in connection with a transversely adjustable edge guide, to assure of the seam having throughout its extent the desired width, the
parts being so arranged that such desired width may be exactly regulated.
The structural details of the improvement will be set forth at length in the following description which is to be read in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated a preferred and advantageous embodiment of the invention while the novel 7 features by which the invention is distinguished from prior devices will be set forth in language of the proper determinative scope in the claims appended at the end of the description.
In the said drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined presser foot and edge guide attachment for sewing machines, made in accordance with the-present invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view elevation of such adjustable member, and
Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view looking at the rear face of the improved adjustable edge guide.
Similar characters of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The improved presser foot is comprised of two essential elements, a stationary part as 1 which is the presser foot proper and a supplemental presser part, as 2, which is preferably adjustable with relation to the part 1. The latter includes a shank portion, as 3, which fits upon and is held to the presser bar of the machine, such presser bar being indicated at 4 in dotted lines in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, a body portion, as 5, and a foot portion, as 6, which projects at right angles from the portion 5 and extends upwardlyin the usual manner.
The presser part 2 is of substantial L- shape in cross section and comprises a vertical back portion, as 7, and a horizontal presser, as 8, which in the assembled relation of the parts forms in effect a lateral extension of the foot portion 6 and is flush therewith.
The presser part 2 has interfitting slidable engagement with the part 1 and accordingly an undercut transverse groove, as 9, is formed in the part 1 adjacent the shank 3 to receive the upper end of the portion 7 and an undercut transverse beveled shoulder, as 10, is provided on the underface of the foot 6 to receive the conformably beveled end of the presser 8, the under-face of the latter by virtue of this manner of engagement being flush with the foot 6, as above stated. The presser 8 is curved transversely, as best shown in Figs. 2- and 6, the end portions of the presser being therefore higher than its central portion. This arrangement is of particular importance in that it allows of the ready feed of the cloth, irrespective of the position at which the part 2 may be set. Obviously, if the presser 8 were perfectly flat, the feeding movement of the cloth, if not positively retarded, would at least be interfered with and the operation of steam stitching would therefore be imperfect and unsatisfactory.
The slightly raised end portions of the presser 8, however, allow of the ready passage of the cloth, the necessary pressure be ing placed thereon by the portion of the presser adjacent the foot 6. Inasmuch as the presser 8 may extend the entire width of the seam it will be obvious that wrinkling and sagging of the cloth will be positively prevented. The presser 8 is provided with ascale, as 11, by means of which the adjustments of said presser with respect to the part 1 may be accurately made.
The edge guide structure is designated generally as 12, and as shown more particularly in Fig. 7 comprises a plate, as 13, and a yieldable guide, as 1 1. The plate 13 fits slidably and adjustably in a transverse groove, as 15, formed in the rear face of the portion 7 and said plate at its lower edge is provided with suitably formed loops, as 16. The means for yieldably supporting the guide let comprises a rock shaft, as 17 which has its bearings in the loops 16 and to one end of which the guide 14 is attached, the said guide being in the nature of a thin angularly projecting arm having a curved bearing edge which rides easily over cross seams and other surface irregularities of the cloth being worked upon.
The shaft 17 carries at its other end a rearwardly projecting arm, as 18, to which is connected one end of a retractile coil spring, as 19, which is employed to hold the arm 14 in engagement with the cloth or bearing surface of the machine. The plate 13 is formed at its end adjacent the spring 19, with a rearwardly projecting lug, as 20, which extends from the upper edge of said plate and is provided with an overturned guide fork, as 21. The other end of the spring 19 is secured to an axially movable screw stem, as 22, which projects through an opening in the lug 20 and which is provided with a knurled adjusting nut, as 23. By turning the nut 23, the stem 22 may be raised or lowered in order to increase or decrease the tension of the spring 19 as ma be found desirable for the particular gra e or thickness of the cloth being worked upon. The projections of the fork 21 engage in an annular groove 24 in the nut 23 and thereby serve to hold the latter against axial displacement. The plate 13 is formed with a scale, as 25, by which such separate adjustments of said plate as may be necessary, may be accurately made.
The several parts thus assembled and related are bound together by a screw, as 26, which is threaded in an opening, as 27 in the body 5 of the part 1 and projects through registering longitudinal slots, as 28 and 29, in the plate 13 and part 2 respectively, the screw 26 having a knurled head, as 31, and a bearing flange, as 32, which engages the plate 13 and frictionally binds the parts.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the parts may be adjusted for work on narrow or wide seams, the guidej'l being adjustably positioned with relation to the foot 6 and the presser 8 being usually adjusted to bridge the space between said foot and said guide for the purpose of preserving the evenness of the cloth and of assuring of the accurate feeding thereof. In some classes of work, as for example, in forming shoulder seams on overcoats, an extra wide seam may be desired and in such case a space will occur between the guide 11 and the presser 8, the plate 13 being longer than said presser. The presser, however, is adjusted as near the guide as possible and the increased bearing surface will be suflicient to maintain the evenness of the cloth.
The present structure efficiently carries out the objects stated and at the same time is simple in its structural details and inexpensive to manufacture. The adjustments 'described may be quickly and conveniently made by manipulating the screw 26 and the device may be readily attached to any stand ard type of sewing machine.
Having fully described my invention, I claim 1. In a presser foot for sewing machines, in combination, two relatively transversely adjustable parts, one part having a projecting presser foot portion formed with a transverse undercut beveled shoulder and the other part having a projecting presser which has its edge beveled comformably to said shoulder and abutting thereagainst, the presser forming in effect a lateral continuation of the foot portion and being flush therewith.
2. In a presser foot for sewing machines, in combination, a stationary part provided with a presser foot, a presser arranged to form at all times a lateral continuation of the presser foot, and an edge guide, both the presser and the edge guide being independently transversel adjustable with relation to the presser foot and means common to and acting upon all of said parts to hold them against relative movement.
3. In a presser foot for sewing machines, in combination, two relatively adjustable parts, one of which has a presser foot portion having a transversely recessed under face and the other of which has a transversely curved presser which is fitted in the recess and projects laterally of the foot portion.
4:. In a presser foot for sewing machines, 1n combination, a stationary part having a body portion and a projecting presser foot portion provided with a transverse undercut shoulder in its under face, and a second part of L-shaped cross section and removably associated with the stationary part, the second part having a back portion which is held against the back face of the body 'portion and a projecting presser portion formed to engage the shoulder.
5. In a presser foot for sewing machines, a part which is attached to the presser bar and has a forwardly projecting presser foot portion, the latter having an unyielding engaging surface and having also a transverse recess in its under face, and a presser part which forms a lateral continuation of the foot portion and is fitted in the said recess for transverse adjustment with relation to the foot portion, the under faces of the foot portion and of the presser part being flush.
6. A presser foot for sewing machines comprising two companion parts, one of which has a transverse recess in its under face and the other of which fits in the recess and is adjustably slidable laterally with respect to said first named part, means for clamping the said laterally slidable part in various positions with respect to its companion part, both of said parts having portions with presser surfaces the said presser surfaces of both of said parts being flush with each other, and forming together a smooth uninterrupted pressure surface adapted to bear upon the cloth.
