a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new.

and useful Improvements in I-Iemstitching Attachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification. 1 i

The object of this invention is to provide an attachment for sewing machines for producing hemstitching. I

My invention consists of a rotatable plate provided with a series of needle openings, any One of which can be brought'into alinement with the needle, the thickness of the plate varying with each of the openings will 1 which is provided in this instance, with the hooks 2 which are adapted to engage the presser foot bar of a sewing machine, and clamped thereto in any suitable manner.

Other forms of connection of the attachment with the presser foot may bedevised,

and may vary with the different styles of sewing machines. From the edge section 1 depends a foot section 3 which is adapted to take the place of the foot of a sewing ma chine attachment. The other end of this edge section 1 has a bar 4 extending at right angles thereto, and from the bar 4 extends an arm 5, the free end of which has an enlargement 6. Over the enlargement 6 is located a rotatable plate 7 and is connected therewith by the screw 8. This plate is square in outline and has its upper surface formed with the four

The. enlargement '6 has a needle opening 22 and a slot 23 extending from the opening out through the edge 24, of the enlargement. The opening and slot of the enlargement coinciding with the opening and slot of the rotatable plate when the plate is in working position. From the upper face of the enlargement extends a stud 25, which is located to receive the needle opening of the bevel of the rotatable plate opposite the needle opening 22 of the enlargement 6. This pin holds the rotatable plate from rotation.

To the end of the bar tis pivoted a finger 26 which extends over the center of the rotatable plate, and from the finger depends a stop 27 which engages the edge of the arm 5, and limits the movement of the finger and locates it properly over the rotatable plate. 7

In use the attachment is secured to the presserlmr of a sewing machine which will locate the foot section 3 over the cloth feeder of the machine, and the needle opening 22 in the enlargement will permit the needle to move vertically through it. The finger 26 is moved on its pivot to expose the rotatable plate 7. A strip of cloth 28 is placed over the rotatable plate and another strip of cloth 29 is placed beneath the enlargement 6 and both located between the foot section 3 and The foot section 3 is then machine is set in motion which will "feed both strips of cloth together, and the needle will move through the opening of one of the bevels and through the opening 22 in the enlargement 26. The thickness of the'enlargement and of the bevel will determine thelwidth ofthe hemstitching. By the employment of the bevels, the stitches are easily shed.

By adjusting the rotatable plate to bring other of the needle openings to coincide with'the needle opening in the enlargement 6, a greater thickness of the plate will be had Which will increase the Width of the hemstitching.

I claim as my invention.

1. A hemst-itching attachment comprising support adapted to be connected to the presser bar of a sewing machine, and a rotatable plate adjustably connected with the support, the plate having a plurality of bev eled sections, each section having a needle opening and a slot communicating with the opening and extending through the edges of the section.

2. A hemst-itching attachment comprising a support adapted to be connected to the presser bar of a sewing machine, and a rotatable plate adjustably connected with the support and having a plurality of beveled sections, each section having a needle opening, and a slotcommunicating with the opening and extending through the edges of the plate, the edges of the beveled sec tions being of varying thicknesses.

3. A hemstitching attachment comprising a support adapted to be connected to the presser bar of a sewing machine, a rotatable plate adjustably connected with the support, the plate having a plurality of beveled sections, each section having a needle opening and a slot communicating with the opening and extending through the edges of the sections, and a movable finger having one end located over the pivot of the plate.
