UNITED STATESv PATENT OFFICE.
KARL BUXBAUM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WALTER S. GANS, MILTON II. GANS, AND JOHN H. ANDREAS, OF
SAME PLACE,
BINDING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters-Patent No. 570,121, dated October 27', 1896. Application filed September 6, 1895. Serial No.v561,626. l(No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, KARL BUXBAUM, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing in the cityand county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and'useful Improvement in Binding Attachments for Sewing-Machines, which improvement is fully set forth in the following` specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a binding attachment for a sewing-machine which is formed of novel parts, as will be hereinafter1 set forth, and pointed out in the claims that follow the specification.
Figure l represents a perspective View of a bindingattachment or device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section thereof on line am, Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents a Vertical section of a portion on line y fy, Fig. l. Fig. e represents a horizontal section of a portion on line e a, Fig. l. Fig. 5 represents a vertical section of a portion of the base or bed plate with a leveling-screw therein.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the base of the device, the same being provided with slots Al for attachment to a sewing-ma chine.
On the side of the base A is the arm B, the outer end of which has vthe grooved gage O thereon, and the inner end has the limb D therein, said arm B being freely connected with the base A by the screwE, which passes through the slot E and enters said base.
F designates a screw which passes through the limb D and enters the base A at a right angle to the screw E, whereby the arm B, and consequently the gage O, may be adjusted to and from the folders I-I and J, said screw F also carrying the jam-nut G for evident purposes.
The folders I-I and J consist of plates J J 2, with inturned lips, the plate J being adjustably attached to the base A by means of the screw K and pinfL, while the plate J 2 is vpreferably rigidly attached to the base A by the screws or rivets, it being noticed that the gage O is set back of the lips N of the folders.
In the plate J are slots P and Q, through which the screw K and pin L pass, respectively, by which provision said plate J may be moved in opposite directions for adjusting the folders relatively to each other.
On the pin L is a washer R, which rests upon the plate J and is pressed against the same by means of the spring S, which is interposed between said washer and the nut T, the latter being fitted to the threaded portion of the pin L, by which provision the tension of the plate J may be adjusted, said plate being elastic or yielding.
In the base A are vertically-arran ged screws U, whose points, which are below, are rested on the plate of the sewing-machine, so that said base may be set true on said plate.
V designates an arm which is connected with the journal WV, the latter freely entering the socket X on the base A, so that the arm may be raised and lowered or vertically adjusted, said journal being adapted tobe engaged by the screw Y, so as to retain said journal, and consequently the arm V, in adjusted position.
Rising from the armVand secured thereto is a guide Z, consisting of the columns Z', between which is a slotted gage B', through which passes the screw C', so that said gage may be raised and lowered relatively to the width of the band or binding material, the screw being provided with the head D' and nut E', whereby the gage may be clamped and thus held in adj usted position.
The armV carries at its outer end the platespring F', which-partly enters between the columns Z' and is adapted to bear against the band or fabric Gr', (shown in full lines in Fig. l and dotted lines, Fig. 3,) said spring being engaged by the screw H for adjusting the pressure on the spring and consequently on the. band or fabric.
The operation is as follows: The binding material is passed through the guide Z, with the gage B thereover, so that said material moves true and uniform through said guide, its tension being regulated by the spring F through the medium of the screw H', as has been stated. The binding material, with the fabric between the same, is now directed through the folders N, and the material is properly turned over the fabric, and the two IOO are now 'conveyed to the needle of the niachine, whereby the binding is stitched tothe fabric. 1When the fabric or binding, or both, is of increased thickness, the plate J' yields, and when the fabric or binding, or both, become normal said plate returns to its original position, owing to the action of the spring S and the elasticity of the plate JC Vhen it is desired to have fabric bound with material of greater Width on one side than the other, the plate J is moved out, so that its lip N eX- tends outwardly to a greater extent than that of the plate J2. v
The plate A is shown With a duplication of parts, such as the folders, gage, adjusting features, &c., which `may be of different sizes from the corresponding parts if so desired, so as to adapt the attachment to the binding of materials of different dimensions, thus avoiding the employment of separate attachments for such purpose.
rIhe device is serviceable for binding clothing, hats, and garments generally, suspenders, and other articles.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a binding attachment a plate, a gage having a slotted side arm with a limb at its end, an ad justing-screu7 in said limb and plate, and a clamping-screw in said arm, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. In a binding attachment, a plate with a horizontal socket in its front end, an arm having a journal adj ustably mounted in said socket, a guide secured to said arm, and a gage supported on said guide, said parts being combined substantially as described.
In a binding attachment, a plate with a horizontal socket in its front end, an arm journaled lin said socket, a clamping-screw for the journal of said arm, a guide secured to said arm, a gage supported in said guide, a spring secured to said arm, and means for controlling said spring, said parts being combined substantially as described.
4c. 'In a binding attachment, a main plate with a horizontal socket in its front end, folders on said plate, an arm with journal adjustable in said socket, a guide consisting of standards secured to said arm, a gage adjustable in said guide, and a spring with an end in said guide, said parts being combined substantially as described.
5. In a binding attachment, the arm V having the journal IV mounted in the socket X, in the base thereof, the guide Z on said arm, the gage B', in said guide, the spring F on said arm adjacent to said guide, and the set-screw Il', in the arm and engaging said spring, substantially as described.
