WILLIAM SCHLERETI-I, OF NEW ROCHELLE, NEW YORK.
SANITARY HYPODERMIC HEATER.
Application filed February 18, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WVILLIAM SCHLERETH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Rochelle, in the county of WVestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Hypodermic Heaters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to heaters for heat ing hypodermic fluid and seeks to provide a simple and effective form of heater which may be carried as the ordinary watch with fluid bowl inclosed and preserved in a sanitary condition always ready for instant use.
Doctors of medicine and nurses often find it necessary to resort to the hypodermic in the treatment of patients and usually the swiftness with which the treatment can be administered is a very important factor.
Water is the usual absorbent and dissolvent for hypodermic and this must be boiled and sterilized to insure the safety of the treatment, the quantity required for one injection being ordinarily about one dram, a convenient and sanitary means of heating this amount immediately is very desirable.
The present invention seeks to provide an improved hypodermic heater which may be carried in a closed and sanitary condition, so that by pressing a spring opposed press button the heater is ready for instant use.
After being used the heater may be closed as readily as the lid of a hunting case watch and carried in the pocket or attached to a chain in the manner that watches are carried. always ready for an emergency case.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a View of the improved hypodermic heater opened and in position for use. Fig. 2 is a view of the heater in the position as that illustrated in Fig. 1, but at a different angle. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, taken on line a-a of Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a plan view. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan view, with the parts in the same position as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The inclosing case 1 is preferably a hol- Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 9,160.
low disk shaped cylinder as shown, one side being closed by the wall 2, the opposite side being provided with the lid 3 hinged at 1 and held in open position by the spring 5, the lug 6 being suitably shaped to engage the latch 7 which is held in latched position by the spring 8, the latch having mounted on the outward end thereof the push button 9, the spring 5 being so arranged as to open the lid and hold it open when the latch is released by pressing the button, the stop 10 of the lid bearing on the stop 11 of the case and holding the lid when open at an angle of about ninety degrees from that of the closed position so that itwill stand upright with the wall 2 lying horizontal.
Projecting from the lid 3 is the lug 12 terminating in the hinge 13 to which is hinged the fluid bowl 14, the spring 15 being so arranged in the hinge that it will when not opposed hold the bowl in horizontal position when the lid is in vertical position as shown.
The lamp 16 is secured to the wall 2 of the heating case and provided with the hole 17 through which wicking 18 or other absorbent material may be inserted to fill the lamp, the absorbent material being saturated with alcohol or other fuel, it being obvious that the wicking may be saturated from time to time by pouring fuel thereon, or that the wicking may be omitted and other forms of fuel may be employed, as urotropin tablets which may simply be placed in the lamp and lighted, the result being a steady, hot flame.
The ring 19 is secured to the case 1 for the purpose of attaching a chain as to the ordinary watch or a physicians thermometer to prevent losing the heater.
It will be understood from the foregoing that with the lid 3 closed the bowl is held in the position shown with clearance between the bowl and the lamp, preserving the parts in a clean and sanitary condition, and that by pressing the push button 9 the lid 3 will instantly open and project the bowl in position for holding fluid, provided the case 1 be laid with the wall 2 downward. The fluid to be heated is placed in the bowl and a lighted match held underneath, from the heat of which the water will boil in a few moments, or if desired the lamp may be lighted and the fluid boiled more speedily.
Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a hypodermic heater the combination of a case, a lid closing said case, means to open said lid, and means to automatically project a bowl in usable position when said lid is open.
2. In a hypodermic heater the combination of a case, a lid hinged to said case, and a bowl hinged to said lid.
3. In a hypodermic heater the combination of a case, a lid hinged to said case. a latch suitably positioned to hold said lid closed, a spring suitably arranged to open said lid when said latch is released. a bowl suitably hinged to said lid,and a spring connecting said lid and said bowl whereby said bowl may be folded into said case and said spring may project said bowl from said lid when said lid is open.
4:. In a hypodermic heater the combination of a case, a lid closing said case, a bowl in said case, and means controlled by a push button to automatically open said lid and project said bowl in usable position.
5. In a hypodermic heater the combination of a case, said case having a closed side, the opposing side of said case being closed by a lid,' a bowl contained in said case, a lamp contained in said case, and means controlled bythe pressing of a pushbutton whereby the lid is instantly opened to an angle of approximately ninety degrees from said case and said bowl is projectedapproximately parallel to said case with said lamp in alinement with the axis of said bowl and on the convex side thereof.
6. In a hypodermic heater the combination of a case, a bowl in said case, a lamp in said case, a lid closing said case, means for opening said lid and means for extending said bowl from said case with said lamp p0- sitioned on the convex side of said bowl.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
