`proved means for controlling the flow of air,
and of the products of combustion, for controlling the generation. and distribution of heat so that all the various dampers or valvesV are automatically associated in correct positions according tothe effect desired. An indicator or master handle is provided; and the user of the stove moves this to either of three positions in one of which the valves, through their connections, are all set in proper position for kindling, in another for checking, and in another for baking.
In Letters Patent No. (305,303, granted to me on June 7, 1808, is shown a cooking stove in which two openings to the smoke pipe ai'e provided in combination with a single damper which may substantially7 cover either one or both of the openings, thus providing, so far as the entrance to the smoke pipe is concerned, for a proper setting of the dam pers by the control of a single knob. Such a damper fails to cover a complete cooking stove because as such stoves have heretofore been constructed no means has been which automatically insures correct setting of the damper which admits air to the under side of the grate, commonly called the draft. l
.Tt is an object of the present invention to provide such a combination, with the result of 1nateriall \7 simplifying the management of the cooking stove.
Yhere there ,are three possible settings for the two passages into the smoke pipe,
`and two possible settings for the draft 7 controlling the flow of air for combustion, a person using the stove may easily fail to get the precise combination fof settings that is proper; and it is a fact that ranges often fail to give good or satisfactory service for this very reason.
It is the aim of the present invention to avoid the possibility of this by providing a control for the air entering to the grate in combination with the control which diprovided rects the products of combustion around the oven, or short circuits them direct to the chimney fine, and that which controls the chimney flue itself.
In the invention hereinafter disclosed, I have arranged a door or valve and its connections so as to control the admission of air for combustion in harmony with the dainpers controlling the flow of the gaseous products of combustion, so as to effect a full and complete regulation of the direction and V quantity of gases flowing within the stove in a manner never before attempted so far as I am'aware.
It is also an object of the inventionito provide for a separate opening of the air draft, apart from the combination, whenever that may be desired without interfering with the setting of the other parts of the combined arrangement.
.1t is the intent of the patent to cover by the appended claims whatever features of patentable novelty exist in the invention disclosed. y
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate an embodiment of the invention and modifications thereof, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a cooking stove embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a perspective of a modification; and Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of another modification.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates the body of thc cooking range, 11 its top, 12 its grate, and 13 the beginning of its smoke pipe ortlue. In the frrin here illustrated there are two openings marked respectively 14 and 15 through either of which the gaseous products of combustion may from the stove to the smoke pipe; and there is an opening 1G through which air may reach the under side of the grate 12 for combustion. a plate or door, 17, closes the latter opening; and a damper, consisting` of a sliding plate, 1S, is so arranged that it may close either or both of the openings 14.- and 15. IThe invention provides means for connecting these various dampers. The dampers controlling the openings 14 and 15 may preferably be arranged as shown in my said Letters Patent; and one embodiment of this is illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings where the plate 18 is connected by a rod 19 to a stem and knob 20 which may be moved through a slot 21. to either of three positions,

so that the gases of combustion can pass away'from thegrate into the smoke pipe through either of the openings 14; and 15, only ait a minimum rate. rlhe position C corresponds to the arrangement of the Vof air to the under side of the grate has ordinarily a. simple movement in one direction to admit and in the opposite direction to shut oifthe air. The movement of the damper plate 18 from position A through 4position B to position C is continuous in direction; yet at one of these positions, A, the' draft 17 oughtto be opened, in the next, B, it ought to be closed, and in the next, C, it ought to be open, in order to get vthe most eiiicient as well as the most effective operation of the range. The invention provides mechanism by which this may be accomplished consisting, in the preferred form, in the provision of a pivotal mounting for thedraft door 17, with a lug 29 in position to be engaged by a rocker arm 22 andpushed thereby in the direction to open the door 17, leaving that door free to be moved still farther in the same direction. A catch, which may preferably be a gravity latch, 23, is provided to hold the door 17 when wider open. The rocker arm 22, pivotedv at 2&1, is operated by a connectingl rod 25 which is pivoted thereto at 26 and is at its other end attached pivotally to the stem and handle 20. This pivot 26 between the connecting rod 25 and the rocker arm 22 is at the opposite end of the latter from where it engages the lug 29; and in the form of the invention illustrated is directly under the position B ofv the handle 20. As the movement of the upper end of this connecting rod 25 is rectilinear, going equal distances to the left and Vto the right of the position which it occupies when the connecting rod ,stands vertical, and as the rod 25 is inextensible, and as the parts are constructed so that the pivot 26 is slightly below the level of the pivot 24 of the rocker arm, when the connecting rod 25 is vertical, it follows that this pivot 26 is raised somewhat when the upper end of the con`V nectingjrod 25 is moved rectilinearly to the left or to the right, because the lower end tical arciin which the pivot 26 swings around theV center 24. By reason ofthe factthat theV lug 29 swings away from therocker arm 22, it is possible for the user to open the door 17 wide, by hand, to get access to the grate forpoking out ashes or for-any other purpose.
A modified form of the invention is illus-4 trated in Fig. 3 in which the door 17 corresponds to the door 17 of Fig. 1, and the rocker arm is omitted, one end of the connecting rod 25 being pivoted to the handle 20 as before, while the other end is attached loosely to the door 17in such a way that can not follow the movement of the handle 20 to the right or left. That end of the rod y must therefore rise; andthe door is hinged so that it will be openedwhen the lower end of the rod 25 is thus raised.
Another modification of the invention is illustrated in `Fig. 4 Vwhere the plate 17 corresponds to the door 17 and is arranged ""f to slide horizontally, covering either one orV both of two draft openings17"which lead to the under side of the grate. The slide is operated by a lever 25 pivoted at 27,"with Y a pin-and-slot connection. lVhen the handle', 20 is in its medial or checking position B the sliding plate 17, is in its medial position closing both of the draft openings 17 but when the handle 20 is moved toward either of its sidepositions Axor C'the co-incident movement of the slidingplate 17". moved in the opposite direction opens one of the openings tothe grate, for the admission of air for combustion.

ln reading the claims itwill be understood Vthat closure of the dainpers into the smoke vpipe for the checking position is only approximate, it being necessary that there be always a little space allowed-for escape'of gases, according to customary practice. The intake damper is preferably so arranged that it tends automatically to be closed by gravity. lVhen it is so closed all of the dampers are held in position by gravity; but there should be sutticient friction of the parts so that when it is open its weight will not move them out of the position to which they have been adjusted. The handle can then be left inrvarious intermediate positions, with eiects varying according to its distance from the extreme positions illustrated.
ln the particular stove illustrated in the drawings there is an appreciable space between the openings 14 and l5, which may happen in some designs of stoves, and which is advantageous for some purposes, but it will be understood that the space between these two openings may be much less'than that portrayed, producing incidental changes either in the size of the openings or inthe travel of the handle 20.
l claim as my invention:
l. In a cooking stove havinga grate with openings for intake of air and discharge of gases to a smoke pipe, the combination of dainpers controlling thel said openings, and connections between the dainpers, and a master member joined toV said connections having a handle adapted to slide horizontally along the top of the stove and another part adapted to move vertically when the handle moves horizontally, movement of which master member etfects predeterminato movement of said dampers simultaneously.
2. The combination, in a stove having a grate, a direct passage therefrom to the smoke pipe, an oven, and an alternative passage to the smoke pipe going around the oven, of dampers for thesaid passages and the intake of-air to the grate, and operating connections associating a closed position of thev intake damper with approximate closure of the smoke pipe and associating an open position of the intake with an opening of eitherV passage to the smoke pipe.
3. The combination, in a stove having a grate and discharge passage to a smoke pipe, of dampers controlling the admission of air to the grate and the escape of gases tothe smoke pipe, and connections between them including an operating handle movable progressively through three locations, movement of which handle effects predeterminate movements of both dainpers simultaneously through three corresponding settings during which respectively the intake damper is open, is closed, and then is open again, the intake damper being movableto wide open position independently of said connections.
4. The combination, in a stove having a grate and a direct and an indirect passage therefrom to the smoke pipe, of dainpers controlling the said passages and the intake of air to the grate, a handle controlling them all, movable between three positions, the medial position corresponding to a closed position of all of said dainpers.
5. The combination, in a stove having a grate and a direct and an indirect passage therefrom to the smoke pipe, of dampers controlling the said passages and the intake of air to the grate; a handle for controlling them all, movable between three positions, the medial position corresponding to a closed position of all of said dampers; and connections, including a horizontally move ing part for the smoke pipe passages and a rod depending loosely therefrom for the air intake, said rod being vertical when the handle is in medial position, and inclined when it is out of medial position, whereby the lower end of said rod is raised and lowered by said horizontal movement from and toward said medial` position.
