Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 30, 1911. Serial No. 618,047.
Be it known that I, JOHN E. CHAMBERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Gas- Stoves and Fireless Cookers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This'invention relates to improvements in a combined gas stove and fireless cooker.
One of the objects of the present invention is the provision of a device of this character which can be used when desired as an ordinary gas stove and for all the purposes and in the same manner as such stoves are ordinarily used, and which can also when desired be used as a fireless cooker, the burners of the'stove being utilized to produce the initial heat.
A further object of the present invention is the provision in a device of this character of improved means for preventing the passage of fuel to the burner in the cooking compartment when such compartment is adapted for use as a fireless cooker.
A further object of the invention is the provision in a device of this character of a cooking compartment having a burner therein and provided with an opening which is normally open when the device is to be used as an ordinary gas stove, in combination with a door or damper for closing said opening when the device is to be used as a fireless cooker, and operating means for such dooror damper of suc a construction as to shut off the flow of fuel to the burner as the door or damper is closed, such operating means being, however, so connected to the fuel valve as to permit any desired adjustment thereof as long as the door or damper is in open position.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a device of this character which is made up of a plurality of similarly formed units so that the stove can be formed with any desired number of cooking compartments.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein a convenient embodiment of the invention is illustrated and wherein like numerals of reference refer to similar parts in the several views.

and fireless cooker constructed in accordance with the present invention, said stove comprising in the formillustrated, two superposed compartments B and C, which may be used in any manner in which the ordinary cooking compartments of a gas stove can be used and which may also be used as a fireles s cooker when desired. F or the purposes of illustration, I have shown the stove as consisting of two cooking compartments only, but from the detailed description hereinafter, it will be understood that the stove may be made up of as many compartments as desired and that such compartments may be constructed according to the uses for which they are designed.

The bottom sheet of each compartment is provided with downwardly extending flanges at the sides thereof which are adapted to fit within the flanges 03', of the body, and to be rigidly secured thereto by fastening devices of any suitable character.
Secured to the rear wall of the body D of each of the cooking compartments and extending longitudinally thereof is an open ended flue F, theends of which project slightly beyond the top and bottom of the body and the upper end of which is preferably made slightly smaller than the lower end thereof. The upper portion of the body v D of each of the compartments is provided in the rear wall thereof with a vent opening G which communicates with a small vent tube G which projects into the flue F and is preferably provided with a downwardly beveled outer end. The vent pipe G is smaller than the interior of the flue so as not to impede the passage of air and gases therethrough. Positioned within the inte rior of the body D of each compartment and over the inlet end of the vent opening G is a sheet metal guard or shield, a portion of which overlies the top of the cooking compartment and is spaced therefrom. As the flanges (Z depend only from the sides and front of the lower portion of the upper cooking compartment, and as the band or frame E extends only around the front and sides of the adjacent portions of the upper, and lower cooking compartments, it will be seen that there will be provided at the back of the cooker an open space between the bottom of the upper cooking compartment and the top of the lower cooking compartment through which air can pass to the draft opening H in the bottom of the upper cooking compartment. \Vith the parts in this position securing bolts are passed through the side portions of the band E and the flanges of the upper compartment which are positioned within said band. \Vhen the compartments B and C are assembled in this manner, the lower portion of the flue F of the upper compartment will telescopically engage the upper portion of the flue F of the lower compartment, thus forming a continuous fiue common toboth cooking compartments. I It will of course be understood that while I have shown and described the stove as comprising but two compartments,

The levers R normally occupy positions at substantially right angles to the branch supply pipes O, and when in-thisposition the dampers M controlled thereby are in their open positions so as to permit the free passage of gases from the cooking compart- The levers are always maintained in this position when the cooking compartments are to be used in the manner of cooking compartments of the ordinary gas stove, and it will be seen that while the levers occupy this position, the handles of the gas valves may be shifted to cut oil the flow of gas to the burners to any desired extent, without in any way affecting the position of the dampers controlling the vent passages. This is important as in the use of a gas stove it is frequently desired to use a very low flame and to at the same time have the vent passage open. When either 'of the cooking compartments is to be used as a fireless cooker, the lever R of such compartment is shifted to a position substantially parallel to the front of the compartment. During this movement of the lever B, the lug 1* will engage the handle Q of the valve Q, and move such valve to its closed position, thereby cutting off the flow of gas to the burner; It will thus be seen that it will be impossible to close the damper to convertthe device into a fireless cooker. without at the same time automatically cutting off the flow of fuel to the burner, and at the same time when either of the compartments is to be used as a gas stove, it will be seen that the gas' supply valve may be adjusted to any desired position without in any way restricting the vent passage leading from the compartment.
From the above described construction it will be apparent that th device may be made up of as many compartments as desired and that any one or all of such compartments may be at any time utilized as a g; s stove or as a tireless cooker.
IVhile a convenient embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it will be understood that many changes may be made to the form and construction herein shown without in any way departingfrom the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. In a combined stove and tireless cooker, a cooking compartment provided with an opening therein leading to the exterior thereof, a burner in said cooking compartment, a fuel valve controlling the passage of fuel to said burner,- said valve being provided with a rotatable stem, a damper for the opening in the cooking compartment, operating mechanism for the damper including an operating handle loosely mounted on the stem of the fuel va'lve, said operating handle and valve stem being provided with cooperating portions acting to turn the valve to closed position when the operating handle is shifted to move the damper to closed position and permitting free action of the valve independent of the damper operating mechanism.
2. In a combined stove and tireless cooker, a cooking compartment provided with an opening therein leading to the exterior there of, a burner in said cooking compartment, a fuel valve controlling the passage of fuel to said burner, said valve being provided with a rotatable stem, and an operating handle projecting laterally therefrom, a damper for the opening in the cooking compartment, op-
erating mechanism for the damper including a lever loosely mounted on the stem of the fuel valve and provided with a projection normally positioned alongside of the operating handle of the fuel valve so as to contact therewith as the lever is shifted.
3. In a combined stove and fireless cooker, a cooking compartment, provided with an opening leading to the outside, a burner for said cooking compartment, a fuel valve controlling thepassage of fuel to said burner, a handle for said valve, a closure for the opening in the cooking compartment, operating mechanism for the closure including an operating handle, the said handles being mounted to rotate about a common vertical axis, and operatively associated means whereby a movement of one handle in one direction will result in a movement of the other handle in the same direction, and said connection permitting independent movement of of one of said handles.
'4. In a combined stove and tireless cooker,
the combination of a cooking compartment provided with an opening leading to the outside, a damper for controlling said opening, a burner for the cooking compartment, a valve for controlling the fuel supply to said burner, an operating handle for the valve, operating mechanism for the damper, an operating handle for said mechanism, said operating handles being mounted to rotate about a common axis, and an operative engagement between said handles whereby as the damper is movedto closed position, the
burner valve is sin'iultaneously moved to closed position, and said operative engagement permitting free independent movement of the fuel supply valve when the damper is open.
5. In a combined stove and tireless cooker, the combination of a cooking compartment provided with a vent opening, a damper for said opening, a burner for the compartment, fuel supply means for the burner, a rotatable valve for regulating the fuel supply, a handle for said valve, operating mechanism for the damper including a handle, said handles being arranged adjacent to one another and a connected part of one handle constituting a support for the other handle, the handle for the fuel valve being adapted to moveindependently of the handle for operating the damper, and inter-engaging means carried by the handles whereby as the damper handle is moved to close the damper the fuel supply valve is moved to closed position.
