Description
JAMES R. VVERTH, F lRICHMGUI), VIRGINIA.
JAR-CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Deee 7, i915.
Application filed January 26, H5. Serial No, 4,462.
f! 1o all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JAMns ll. lVnn'rn, a citizen of the United States, residing'at lichniond, in the county oil llenrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jarllosnres, ot which the. following is aspecilication.
This invention relates to closures for proserving' jars and has for its object to prou ride a constructimr ot jar and oap which will insure an etleetix'e so-ealled top closure and is distinguished by its sin'iplieitv and strength of construction.
Another object of the Ainvention resides in providing' a clamp or clasp Awhich iinparts dili'erent degrees of pressure on the cap, that is, a tight grip and a semrtigjht ri-ip, the latter beinel used while the oontents oi the jar are. beine' treated in the boiler or vacuum chamber.
Still another object ot' the present invention is to 'provide a reversible ar, that is the jar is stood on the cap during' storage.
lt has been found that some preserves iinproro by inverting' the jar and that the corr tents 'themselves `provide an additional seal for tlnI jar. It is also ionnd to be of great advantage to stand the jar on the cap While the. contents are cooled, and by the provision ot' the feet on the cap the jar is raised 'from the table While being;` cooled, so that air can pass all around it not onlj7 around the sides and bottoni, but also ander the cap which imparts a. more even cooling. l he contraction will therefore be. perfectly even or all Aparts of the ja and Vits closure.
lt will be evident from the drawing that the clamp, when on tight, only enpjaa'es im der the shoulder ont the head and on the llat eenter portion ot' the eap,v While stainlingr free in all other places. The advantapge ot this is that the cap will Ia'et a Central pressure which will distribute ewenlvv all arormd the edge oi the eap and on the paesino' ring' therefor. Lastly provide a sealing;` for the clamp consisting in a wire drawn arf ind the lower end of they clamp a nd the Clampinn' lever and this wire might ha ve a lead seal. The. unbroken seal will then show the customer that the contents oli tho fiar have not been tampered with.
in the aceompanyinndrawing one embodiiaent of the present invention is illnstrated in vvhiehl l `ipure 1 shows a vertical axial section of the jar with the cap clamped down tight `:fully explained later on.
and sealed; Fig. 2 is a similar View to Fig". "l showing the clamp in a semi-tight grip Fig., 3 is a perspective 'View ofthe clamp alone; Fie'. -l-
a top plan vien' of the cap;
Fig. is a sert-ion alone` line of Fig; l; Fig. ll a side view ot' the Cap seen from the lett side ot Fir'. il; Fin', 'T is a vien' similar to Fie'. 2 with the clamp loosened, that is, with the lever pointing` upward; and Fig'. assembled and placed in inverted position.
ln Figs. l and 2, 10 indicates the jar and ll its llat .head provided with a square shoulder at l0 where it joins the neck 13. on the jar. An annular `-groove f) is provided iin the upper l'lat surface ot the head. The cap ll, as best shown in Fig. 5, iseylindrical with its top portion niade inl the shape of a eonio ilrustuin providing a sniall central portion l5 which is llat. segniental reinforceinents 1li which are level with the central portion l5 and provided with tour toet or projections i?. As seen troni the top7 the 'ap Will then give the appearance oi being' divided into tour approximately equal quarters, of which two are conical` namely, the ones marked 18, and two vtlat ones 1G which run. straight into' the. central portion Dialnetrieally opposite and near the edge of the cap are provided two studs 19 on the conical surfaces of the cap. These studs are not so high as the tlat portions 1G. but high enough to engagen'ith the clamp `when in position. as will be more thus providin.; a per'tect air circulation all around the jiar, not onli7 on the top and sides, but also 1 dorneatli it.
On its nader side the cap is provided with a eylindrir'xal reinforcement of approximatelyY the samodiameter as the opening of the neel; which it is intended to ente when in position. The edge of the eap forms a square collar or flange around this cylindriral portion 2O of the, cap, and is intended to receive a washer 2l of suitable packing material, and this Washer is oit a corresponding width to the flat top of the head. It will Je observed that no annular ridges are pro- S is an elevation oil the jar and closure The projections -tahlo on which it stands when it is inverted so laat neither the cap itself, nor the elanipA will come imo contact with the foundation.-
vided either on the cap or on the head, but
that thev adjacent surfaces are perfectly smooth with the exception ot the opposingv grooves 9 and 40 of the head and flange respectively, so that a knit'e or thin blade may be inserted between the cap and the jar to facilitate the openinfr.
The clamp consists ot' a flat band with a rectangular middle vportion 22 having depending arms 23, 24e at right angles to the middle portion 00 At the bend of the arm,
'the strap or clamp is irovided with two slots 25 ot approximately the saine width as the studs 19 on the top of the cap. lVhen the clamp is placed in position, these slots will be engaged by the studs which insure the correct positioning' of the clamp over the cap. f One of the depending arms Q3 has v- 'a downward extension 26, the free end 2T of which is bent outward to 'l'orm a shelt| or -support for the sealing` wire Q8, and the opposite arm 9A is sin'iilarly provided with a shelf 2S) for the saine purpose. 'the arm 2S has a square shoulder or olfset 30 where it is joined by the extension 2G, and this shoulder 30 is intended to grip under the head at 1:2.
In the arm Q4 is provided a slot 31 in which a Ilever 32 is journalcd at 33. This lever has an inwardly extending head 2H..
and vthis head is cilinst'ructed with its greatesteccentricity apjiroximately in the direction ot the free arin of the lever as best seen in Fig. 1 where this portion oi' the liead en fing? upward and' the `eccentric head completely' disengaged Afrom the square shouln der 'l2 andthe clamp ready to be removed. The middle portion 22 ot the clamp is so constructed that it imparts pressure to the eccentric head even when engaged as shown in -Figr-Q. In consulting' this ligure it will be cridcnt that the right hand and ot the middle lportion Q2 is raise-al higlioi.' up troni the. cap than is the case withtlie lett hand end. thereof, hut that in Fig. l both ends are equally depressed toii'ard. the cap but still ,ieai ing a l'i'ee space between the. edge of the cap and llic clamp, and over the conical .surn tai-cs so that :i zentral downward pressure will be inipartcd by the clamp to the cap,
' while at the same, time the clamp is engaged by the two small studs 19. It will also be evident from Fig. 1 that with the jar inverted a. space will be left between the foundation it stands on and the clamp, per mitting air to pass under the cap in this position. Beside the sealing band 28, I also provide a second band or wire 38 which engages the notch 39 near the extreme end of the lever 32, and at the joined ends of this wire. I may place a Seal 41 to prevent tainperin` with the clamp. and insuring that the contents of the jar are intact when reaching the consumer.
It. will be obvious that the construction of the cap in this case makes it extremely strong, and practically unbreakable both during the treatment or the preserving, as well as during transportation. The cap has a reinforcenient 2O on its underside7 as well as a reinforcement 16 on the upper :i le, not to mention its great depth at the center caused by Athe conical shape of the cap.
