I PIPE-WRENCH.
' I lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pipe wrenches.
,The primary object of this device is to provide a wrench having a jaw adjustable in both a longitudinal and transverse direction and provided with quickly operable clamping means. I i
A further object of the device isto provide a wrench having cooperating curved jaw faces for engaging cylindrical surfaces,
the jaws which are provided with such faces 2 being adjustable upon the work in directions perpendicular to each other, whereby different sizes of pipes may be operated upon. i
A still further object is to provide a pipe wrenchadapted for grasping different sizes of pipes and provided with a readily positionable screw-cutting means the entire tool being easy and cheapto manufacture and possessing extreme strength.
' lVith these general objects in view and I others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims. i
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device partially broken Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the away. same. Fig. 3 is a rear elevatlon of the device. Fig. 4 is'a side elevation of the operating end of the Wrench illustrated in en gagement with a pipe section. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken upon line VV of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a similar sectional view taken upon lines VIVI of Fig. 1, and Fig. .7 is a perspective view of the adjusting collar of the device.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, a shank 10 is provided rectangular in cross section. and having a usual form of handle Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented near, 1915.
Applicationfil'ed April 5, 1915. Seiia1No.19} 213. v
1 1 at one end and being provided with a jaw l2 fixedly secured to its opposite end. The said jaw 12 has a fiat engaging face 13 and also a concaved engaging face 14 which latter face is corrugated for engaging the work and is formed by cutting away the inner corner of the jaw 12 and thus forming the face .14 at the inner end of the face 13 thereof. I
.A strap 15 is secured upon the shank l2 slightly spaced from thehandle l1 and projects laterally from the opposite side of the shank from that from which the jaw 12 extends. An" operating screw 16 extends through the" strap 15 and has an exteriorly knurled operating nut 17 mountedthereon within the strap 15 whereby the screw 16 may be readily moved longitudinally and in parallelism with the shank 10. An outer or movable jaw 17" is provided with an eX- tension arin 18'pivoted to the head 20 of the screw, 16. it being noted that the said jaw 17 is operatively positioned with respect to the engagingfaces of the jaw 10 "whereby the workto be operated upon is adapted for feeding therebetween. The outer -,jaw 17 face '13. while the inner end .of the jaw 17 has a concaved engaging face 22 positioned operatively opposite the curved face'lt of the jaw 12. The said concaved face 22 is provided with transverse grooves 23 aswell as longitudinally extending teeth 24.
An adjusting collar 25 is slidably mounted upon the shank 10 and is providedwith opposite angular recesses 26 uponits inner faces, while opposite lugs 27 are provided upon the sides of the shank 10 at points slightly spaced from the 12 thereof, and the collar is slidably mounted upon the aw for transverse adjustment by the positioning of the said lugs 27 within the recesses 26. The end 28 of the collar which lies adjacent the outer face 29 of the shank 10 is provided with an adjusting screw 30 threaded therethrough and having its inner end seated within a'socket 31 in the shank face 29, while the extension arm 18 of the jaw 17 extends through the said collar and has its outer face 32 engaging a curved projection 33 provided within the collar and upon the end 34: thereof and which lies opposite the aforementioned end 28. A leaf-sprin 35 is secured as at 36 to the shank 10 an extending through the collar 25 bears against the inner face of the extension arm 18.
By this arrangement, the complete operation of the device will be apparent in that the longitudinal. adjustment of the aw arm 18 is effected in either direction by turning the nut 17, the same being easily turned by the insertion of a sharp instrument (not shown) in one of the radial openings 12 thereof. Such movements of the extension 18 relatively position the jaws 12 and 17 with respect to each other for the purpose of bringing their engaging faces into and out of contact with the work to be operated upon, such as a pipe 37 as illustrated in Fig. 1. The size of pipe that may be accommodated by the wrench is readily provided for by laterally shifting the collar 25 upon the shank 10 by means of the adjusted screw 30 and thus regulating the limit of distance between the jaws. The spring 35 normally maintains the arm extension 18 against the curved projection 33 of the collar during the engagement with the work and also during the adjusting operation. It is to be noted that one end of each of the collar recesses 26 opens at a side of the collar 25 as best shown in Fig. 4 for the purpose of allowing the easy assembling of the one piece collar upon the wrench shank 10. A threading bit 38 is provided having a triangular tang 39 which may be inserted through the triangular socket 40 of a substantial semi-circular disk extension 11 at the free end of the. handle 11. It will thus be seen that a strong and perfectly operable device is provided for operating upon pipes as well as for holding the thread cutter.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed. to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is 1. A wrench comprising a shank having a terminal jaw, a jaw shiftably mounted upon the said shank and having an arm extension and being provided with engaging faces positioned opposite the said terminal jaw, oppositely-extending lugs upon the said shank, a one-piece adjusting collar encircling the said arm and shank and provided with angular recesses within which the said lugs are positioned, an ad usting screw for the said collar, and a separating spring carried by the said shank and engaging the said arm.
2. ,A wrench comprising a shank, an operating handle at one end thereof, a laterally projecting jaw at the free end of the said shank having a fiat engaging face terminating in acut-out cuii'ved'engaging face at its inner end, a strap upon said shank, a screw extending through said shank, an adjusting nut within said shank and mounted upon said screw, an arm pivoted to one end of the said screw, an outer jaw provided upon the said arm and having roughened fiat and curved engaging surfaces operatively positioned opposite the engaging faces of the said shank jaw, oppositely projecting lugs upon the said shank, a one-part adjusting collar encircling the said shank and arm and being laterally shiftable thereon and provided with angular inner recesses adjacent one end thereof and with a curved projection adjacent its opposite end in normal contact with the outer face of the said arm, the said lugs being positioned within the said recesses, an adjusting screw upon said collar and engaging the said shank, and an expansion spring between the said shank and arm.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
