POULTRY-COOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, 1915.
Application filed April 8, 1915. Serial No. 19,981.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT A. BIviNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Poultry-Coop; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful collapsible poultry coop, and it has for its object to provide a device of this design comprising simple, efficient and practical features of construction.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a View in perspective of the improved coop, showing the same ready for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a view showing the coop collapsed. Fig. 5 is an end view showing the coop collapsed and illustrating how the latches (which are connected to the end pieces when the coop is arranged for use) are utilized to engage eyes on the end of the bottom piece to hold one of the longitudinal sides and the top collapsed on the under face of the bottom piece.
Referring more especially to the drawings, l designates the bottom piece of the coop, and secured upon its upper face adjacent one longitudinal edge 2 is a strip 3, to which is hinged at 41 one of the longitudinal side pieces 5. The longitudinal side piece 5 comprises the upper and lower rails 6 and 7 which are connected by the rungs or rods 8, and the upper rail 6 of the side piece 5 is provided with suitable sockets 9, the purpose of which will appear later. The other longitudinal side piece 10 likewise consists of the upper and lower rails 11 and 12, which are connected by the rungs or rods 13. However, the lower rail 12 is recessed longitudinally, as shown at 1 1 to receive the longitudinal edge portion 15 of the bottom of the coop, and is hinged at 16 in such wise as to swing outwardly and downwardly and fold against the under face of the bottom of the coop. Hinged at 16' so as to collapse against the inner face of the longitudinal side piece 10 is the top piece 17 of the coop, which comprises the outer and intermediate longitudinal rails 18, 19 and 20, and the end rails 21. The outer and intermediate rails of the top piece are connected by the transverse rungs or rods 22. The under face of the rail 19 is provided with lugs 23 to engage the sockets 9 of the top rail 6 of the longitudinal side piece 5, so as to hold the side piece 5 in avertical position. Hinged at 24: to the bottom are the end pieces 25 of the coop, which consist of the upper and lower rails 26 and 27, which are connected by the vertical rungs or rods 28. The upper rails 26 are provided with sockets 29, to receive the lugs 30 of the end rails 21 of the top of the coop, in order to insure a rigid structure. Pivoted at 31 to the end rails 21 of the top are hooks 32, to engage the eyes 33 of the upper rails 26 of the hinged end parts or pieces 25, to prevent disengagement of the lugs 30 from the sockets 29. The upper face of the rail 19 of the top, substantially midway of its length is provided with anelongated recess 35, to receive the rail 36 of the closure 37 (which is hinged at 38 to the intermediate rail 20 of the top) and connecting the rail 36 and the rail 39 of the closure are rungs or rods 40, A suitable hook 41 is pivoted at 42 to the upper rail 6 of the side 5, and is'designed to engage an eye 43 of the rail 36 of the closure, so as to not only hold the closure in a closed position,-against the action of the coil spring 44 (which connects be tween the under portion of the closure and the intermediate rail 20 of the top) but to also hold the top securely down against the end pieces andthe side piece 5, and at the same time prevent the lugs and sockets from disengagement, and in this case, at times, it is immaterial whether the hooks at the ends of the top are in engagement with their eyes or not.
The under face of the bottom 1 adjacent its ends is provided with suitable cleats 46, to hold the coop spaced above the surface on which it rests. Carried by the cleats 46 are eyes 47, which, when the side 10 and the top 17 are collapsed against one another and against the bottom face of the bottom of the coop, receive the hooks 32, thereby holding such parts collapsed, as shown clearly in the drawings. When the side 10 and the top 17 are so collapsed, the end pieces of the coop are collapsed in upon the upper face of the bottom, and the longitudinal side piece 5 is subsequentlycollapsed against the end parts, therefore it will be noted that the strip 3 permits of such foldingvof the parts. In other words, the strip 3, to which the side is hinged, raises the side 5 suificiently so that it may fold upon the end parts. WVhen the side 5 is so folded, its hook 41 engages'an additional eye '49carriedby one of the end pieces, thereby preventing displacement of the parts.
The invention having been set forth, What is claimed as new and useful is l. A collapsible coop comprising bottom, side, end, and toppieces, the end pieces beinghinged to the upper face of the bottom and collapsible thereagainst, one of the side pieces havinga longitudinal recess to receive one ofthe longitudinal edges of the bottom piece and hinged to said bottom piece andhaving hinged connections With the top piece, which-is collapsible. against the inner face of said side piece, Which in turn is collapsible against the under face of the bottom piece, a strip secured to the upper face of the bottom piece adjacent one of. its longitudinal edges and to- Which the other side piece is hingedly connected, in order to collapse upon said end pieces, hook and eye connections for connecting the top, end and one side piece to hold the parts arranged as a poultry receiving coop, eyes carried adjacent/the end of the bottom piece to receive thehooks of the top piece When it and its adjacent hinged side piece are co1- lapsed against the bottom piece, and anadditional eye carried by one of the end pieces to receive the hookof one. of the side pieces to hold the side piece collapsed against the end piece. 7
2. A collapsible coop comprising bottom, side, end, and top pieces, the end pieces beinghinged to the upper face of the bottom and collapsible thereagainst, one of the side pieces having a longitudinal recess to receive one of the longitudinal edges of the bottom piece and hinged to said bottom piece and having hinged connections with the top piece, which is collapsible against the inner face of said side piece, which in turn is collapsible against the under face of the bottom piece, a strip secured to the upper face of the bottom piece adjacent one of its longitudinal edges and to which the other side piece is hingedly connected, in order to collapse upon said end pieces, hook and eye connections for connecting the top, end and one side piece to hold the parts arranged as a poultry receiving coop, eyes car ried adjacent the end of the bottom piece to receive the hooks of the top piece when it and its adjacent hinged side piece are collapsed against the bottom piece, and an additional eye carried by one of the end pieces to receive the hook of one of the side pieces to hold the side piece collapsed against the end piece, and lug and socket connections between the top, end and one of the side pieces, the top piece having a hinged spring tensioned closure, thehook and eye connection between the top piece and one side piece acting tohold the closure in a closed position.
'In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witneses.
