Description

UNITED STATES PATENT @Frio-n.
JACOB W. DAVIS, OF RENO, NEVADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN IRONING AND STRETCHING-BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,277, dated June 27, 1871.
which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
The nature of my invention is to provide an ordinary ironing-board'with a stretching device,
by means of which clothes and other fabrics which have been shrunken by washin g can be stretched to their original length and set by ironing so that they will retain their length.
In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming'a part of this specification, in which- A represents an ordinary tapering ironingboard.. At the wide end of this board is secured a sliding block, B, which moves in thev same plane with the board A, being held in its place and guided in its movements by guide-rods C, which enter holes in the end of the board A. A screw, d, passes horizontally through the middle of the block B and into the end of the board A, and is provided with a suitable head or handle l to accommodate it to being' turned by the hand.
By turning this screw in one direction the block B can be separated from the end of the boardA as far as required. At one end of this block B is fixed a vertical standard, e, to the upper end of which is hinged a curved lever, f. To this lever is secured a clamping-block, g, which closes down on the block B and is secured, when thus clamped, by a rack-bar, h. This bar turns about the opposite end of the block B, the teeth of which are caught by a iange or plate, i, on the lever-bar f. The two connecting faces of the blocks B and g are covered with India rubber or other holding device, which prevents the fabric from slipping. The under side of the narrow or opposite end of the board A is provided with beveled steps or ridges j. A block, K, the upperside of which-is beveled so as to lit sqarely in the beveled steps j, is placed under the narnow end of the board A. This block is provided i with a duplicate lever, f', clamping-block g', and
rack-bar, h', prime to that above described, as being attached tothe sliding block B. The shrunken fabric or article of apparel has one end fastened under the clampingblock g', and is then laid out smoothly upon the boa-rd A. The opposite end is then clamped between the sliding block B and clamping-block g, when, by turning the screw d, the clamps are separated and the fabric stretched. B v wetting and ironing the fabric when in this position it will retain its length after being released from the clamps.
Having thus described my, invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In combination with the adjustable sliding block B, the clamping-block g, held in place by the lever f, with its liange 1l and rack-bar h, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
2. In combination with the ironing-board A,
the blocks B and K and clamping-blocks g g', 1
secured as above described, for the purpose specitied.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
JACOB W. DAVIS. (L. s.)
