MATTRESS-HANDLE.
Application led July 16, 1913.
To all 1li/1,0m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, SARAH J. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denison, in the county of Jackson, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lIattress-Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in mattresses, and more particularly to handles therefor.
The invention has for its object to so construct handles that the same can be easily and quickly attached to or removed from a mattress, and when in place thereon, serving to facilitate the removal and handling of the mattress.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a fragmentary plan view of the mattress showing one of the handles in place. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a portion of a mattress of the usual construction, and 2 one of the handles used in connection therewith.
rlhe handle 2 consists of yokes 3, the bight 4 of which is disposed vertically so as to traverse the edge of the mattress.
The arms 5 of said yoke are disposed horizontally. One of the arms 5 has its ends provided with a perforation 6 which is engaged by the pin 7, the movement of which is limited in one direction by the head 8. The other end of the pin 7 is tapered, as at Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 779,282.
9, and is vscrew-threaded, the purpose of which will appear later. The other arm 5 of the yoke has its end provided with an internally-threaded conical socket 10 which is arranged in registry with the perforation 6 and is adapted to engage the threaded end of the pin 7.
In use, the handles are applied so that the arms 5 thereof will span the upper and lower surfaces of the mattress, after which the pin 7 is passed through the perforation 6 in one end of the arms and is thence forced through the body of the mattress until the end 9 thereof engages the socket 10, the engagement with the socket 10 being obtained upon rotation of the head 8 which has its periphery milled as at 11.
It is obvious that any number of handles may be employed, and may be placed at the ends and sides or upon the sides alone, as desired.
- What is claimed is:
In combination, a metallic U-shaped member, the legs of which are resilient and are arranged to contact with the upper and lower faces of a mattress, the bight portion of said member being arranged to transverse the edge of the mattress and serve as a handle, the end of one of the legs having a hole therethrough, a threaded socket in the opposite leg, a pin having a threaded and pointed end arranged to be inserted through the hole in the first mentioned leg and through the mattress and to be detachably engaged with the socket, the pin being removable bodily from the U-shaped member.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
SARAH J. BENNETT. Witnesses:
G. P. WERTS, L. M. VVERTS.
