DISPLAY-CARD.
Specification 01 Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1915.
Application filed December 23, 1914. Serial No. 878,686.
To all whom it may concern: 7 I
Be itlmown that L'Wamum R. MrNmcK, a citizen ofthe United States, residing in Reading, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Display-Cards, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and attractive display card which can be either suspended from or stood upon its support and which, when standin can be adjusted todifferent angles and wi 1 not scratch or otherwise mar the surface of the table, counter, showcase, or other object upon which it rests.
. In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a sectional view of my improved display card showing the same in a suspended position with the rear leg locked against the back of the same; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the card in a standing position, with the rear leg acting as a support for the same; Fig. 3 1s a transverse sectional view on the line (1-0, Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the lower part of the card showing the rearleg in its unlocked position before it is drawn back to serve as a support.
The display card 1 may be composed of metal, paper, celluloid, or like material, but when of other material than metal is, by preference, provided with a metal backing plate 2 in order to stiffen and strengthen the ,same'. The term card as herein used is therefore intended to cover either of these constructions.
The marginal portion of the card is first folded at 3 and again at 4 so as to stiffen and strengthen the edges of the card and also to provide at the back of each edge of the card a doubled web 5. At the top of the card, the free edge of this web is en gagled by a ring 6 which in turn engages wit a supporting hook, wire, or chain 7, whereby the card can be suspended from a nail 8 projectin from a wall or from a shelf or other suitable support, the doubled web providing a strong and durable means for attaching the suspension ring 6, and the engagement of the latter with the free edge of the web 5 preventing such exposure of the suspension ring at the upper edge of the card as would detract from the appearance of the latter.
To the back of the card, or to the backing member and plate 2' when the same is used, is securely attached, at a point below the upper edge of the card, the upper end of a leg 9 which 18 of flexible material or is so constructed that its lower end can be either laid in close to the back of the card, as shown in Fig. 4, or can be drawn out therefrom so as to brace and support the card when the latter occupies a standing position, as shown in Fig. 2. The leg 9 is of telescopic construction and comprises an upper member 10 and a lower member 11, the latter being free to slide longitudinally on the upper member but being in such frictional engagement therewith as to retain the position to which it has been adjusted in respect thereto. This frictlonal engagement is in the present instance effected by providing the member 11 with inturned flanges 12 at its opposite edges, which flanges lap the edge portions of the ear against the front face of the same, as shown in Fig. 3, said member 10 being rovided with ribs 13 which bear against t e front face of the member 11 with such force that the frictional contact of these ribs with said member 11 and the frictional contact of the flanges 12 of the latter with the edge portions of the member 10 will efiectually prevent accidental displacement of said members in respect to each other after they have been properly adjusted. r
The leg 9 is provided at its lower end with a ad 14 of rubber, cardboard, or like materia which precludes the possibility of scratching or otherwise marrin the surface upon which the card rests. the drawing, this pad consists of a strip clamped in position by the flanges 12 of the member 11 of the leg.
When the leg is shortened as shown in Fig. 4, it can be laid in against the back of the card, and if it is then lengthened the padwill serve to lock the leg in this position by fitting between the back of the card and the web 5 at the bottom of the same, as shown in Fig. 1, or if the pad is not used the lower end of the leg itself will thus not to lock the leg in position.
The preferable method of securing the upper end of the leg to the backing plate of the card is to first press up from said backing plate rearwardly projecting fingers s shown i 15: and 16 which are then folded against the hack of the leg. as shown in Fi 1 and '2, the inconvenience and expense 0 usin 5gp- :n-ntifastenings bein thus avoided. f esirul. however the 'ngerlfi only may be unployed, this linger being passed through an opening in the leg and then folded down on the hack of the same.
I claim:
1. A display card having a leg secured to the back of the card at its upper end, but snsco )(ihle of being drawn outwardly from said lnlck at its lower end so as to serve as a support for the card, said leg having at its lower end clamping flanges and a projecting pad for preventing contact of the lower and of the log with the supporting IJGQJOS surface, said pad consisting of a strip of material clamped between said flanges.
2. A display card having at the back a supporting 1e composed of two members one free to sli e longitudinally on the other, one member having projecting ribs bearing against the front ace of the other member and the latter having inturned edge flanges engaging the front face of the first member at and near the edges of the same.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribin witnesses. 7
