To all whom it may concern; i Be it known that I, GEORGE BOYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rector, inthe county ofClayand State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Launching Apparatus for Life Boats and Rafts, of which the following is a specificatiomreference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an improved launching apparatus for life boats and rafts and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which will be automatically operated upon the sinking of the vessel to which the same is applied, and

the raft or boat released.

It is another important object of the in vention to provide a launching apparatus for vessels embodying means whereby the raft or boat may be elevated to a position above or below the deck'of the vessel so that it will not interfere with the proper land ing of the vessel at a wharf or the loading or unloading thereof.

The invention has specific object to provide a boat or raft, the body of which is mounted upon pontoons or air tanks, boxings arranged in pairs, and

means mounted upon the hull of the vessel for raising or lowering said boxings, means .movable in the boxings and engaging the ends of the pontoons to support theraft or boat in position, and float actuated means for operating said supporting means whereby the raft or boat is released. V i

It is-a further general object of theinvention to provide a device of the. abovecharacter which is simple and durable in its construction, occupies but little room upon the hull of the vessel, and is positive and reliable in its operation.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts tobe hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

In this manner, it will be seen that the detaching of the raft is automatic and the samecannot be carried down'with the vessel, no matter how quickly'thelatter may sink. Theinvention, as a whole, is of exceedingly simple construction, may be readily applied to the ordinary vessel withoutrequiring any alterations therein, and is reli'ableand positive in practical operation. By the provision of such an automatically operating launching apparatus, the lives of many of the passengers and the crew may besaved.
