Abstract

129,076. Baxter, R. June 18, 1918. Submarine vessels.-Marine life-saving apparatus comprises a rigid buoy-like structure 1, Fig. 1, with fixed bilge keels or a platform 2 for preventing rolling to the framework of which are attached vertical plates 2<a> for preventing revolving; the interior is fitted with a deck 8 carrying seats 9 embodying lockers 10 for food, charts, signalling and navigating means etc.; a hollow mast 14, movable through a stuffing box, serves for signalling and ventilation, and as a periscope, and carries a light 17. A hatch 3 and ports 5, closable from the interior, form entrances. A tank 11 forms a table and contains drinking water. Ballast weights 13 carrying ball castors, ballast tanks 23, oxygen &c. cylinders 18 and a bilge pump 19 are provided. One structure may have propelling and steering means 21, 22 and form a mother buoy for non-mobile buoys; this buoy may be cigar shaped. In a modirication, Fig. 3, the structure has a corrugated cylindrical shell 1 surrounded by a belt or fender 1<a> carrying life lines 1<b> and preventing rolling. The structures may be submerged as by filling the tanks 23. They may rest loosely in chocks or be held by hooks &c. When used with submarines, the structures have a central hatch giving access from the submarine.
