FRANK SARDYNSKI AND JOHN TYSZKO, OF AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK.
LIFE-BOAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 23, 1915.
To all wiwm it may concern Be itknown that we, (1) FRANK SARDYN- SKI and (2) JOHN TYszKo, (1) asubject of the Czar of Russia and (2) a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in life boats.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a life boat which may be filled with passengers when positioned upon the deck of a vessel and may be either launched into the water or allowed to be floated upon the sinking of the vessel, the boat comprising a water-tight inclosure for the passengers.
A further object is to provide an inclosed life boat which is water-tight rendering the same incapable of sinking, the same having a movable car which maintains its normal equilibrium regardless of the rocking or other movements of the boat.
A still further object is to provide a floating spherical casing with a passenger car mounted upon rollers therein, for maintaining its normal equilibrium and having means whereby the passengers may look out of the top windows of the boat and may enter and leave the same through a side door thereof.
'With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrange ment of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding. parts throughout the several views :Figure l is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 4: is a horizontal sectional view taken upon line IV-IV of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view partly in section of one of the passenger car mounting means.
, It will be noted that the present boat is designed to be positioned upon the deck of a vessel and to be employed for saving the lives of the passengers in the event of an accident or sinking of the vessel and such life boat broadly consists of the hollow spherical casing 10 having an annular deck 11 supported at opposite projecting portlons 12 by means of brackets 18, it being. understood that the deck is positionedabove the normal water line of the boat and the horlzontal axis or diameter of the casing. A car is positioned within the casing consisting of a basket 14 having its sides parallel to the adjacent inner walls of the casing 10 and being slightly greater than a hemisphere. form of an outwardly projecting normally horizontally positioned flange is carried by the upper edge of the basket while a lower An annular platform 15 in the deck 16 is provided in the basket for sup- 7 porting the passengers or occupants, such lower .deck having a trap door 17 therethrough leading to a chamber 18 therebeneath. V
-A plurality of windows 19 are positioned. v a
in the top of the casing-10 while a vertically positioned pole 20 centrally carried by the lower deck 16 is provided with cross rounds 21 thus forming a ladder by means of which the passengers ascend to the windows 19 for the purpose of lookingout of the boat. The casing 10 has an outside door 22 and by means, of which persons may freely pass from the outer deck 11 to the inner platform 15 and vice versa while a ladder 23 alfords a means for allowing communication between the platform15 and the lower deck 16.
The basket is shiftably supported within the casing by means of a plurality of legs 24 which are radially arranged upon the outer side of the basket and have outer 'oortions 25 connected by suitable swivels 26 with the main portions of the legs, while rollers 27 are journaled in the free ends of the said outer portions 25. The upper end of the pole 20 is also provided with a swiveled portion 28 having a roller 29 journaled therein for engaging the adjacent surface of the inner side of the casing.
From this detailed description of the invention it will be seen that whenever desired, the door 22 of the boat may'beopened and persons may freely pass from the outer deck 11 to the inner platform 15 and by means of the ladder 23 may descend to the lower deck 16 and when the door is closed, the boat will be water-tight and will completely protect the occupants thereof. The mounting of the basket 14 upon the rollers 27 insures a maintenance of the equilibrium of the basket as the lower deck upon which the occupants are positioned is below the center of gravity of the basket so that the lower deck normally remains horizontal regardless of the movements of the casing 10 during the rocking movements of the boat in the water. The outer deck acts as an outrigger for preventing the boat from capsizing while the brackets 13 provide a form of stern and bow keel members.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferable embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is z 1. A life boat comprising a spherical casing, an annular projecting deck carried thereby, a passenger basket within the said casing substantially hemispherical in form, an annularly projecting platform provided at the upper edge of the said basket, and swivelly mounted rollers carried between the said basket and the inner side of the casing.
2. A life boat comprising a spherical casing, a side door and top windows providedfor the said casing, a projecting annular outer deck secured to the said casing above the normal horizontal axis thereof and having opposite projecting portions, bracing brackets connecting'the lower sides of the said projecting portions and the outer side of the casing, a passenger basket positioned within said casing, a platform secured to the upper edge of the said basket, a lower deck positioned within said basket below the center of gravity thereof, a ladder between the said platform and lower deck, a ladder centrally carried by the said lower deck and extending adjacent the said casing windows, roller mounting means between the said basket and casing, and a casing engaging swiveled rollers carried by the free end of said centrally carried ladder.
3. In combination with a life boat, a nor mally horizontally positioned passenger basket substantially hemispherical in form positioned in said boat, a passenger deck within said basket, an outwardly projecting annular platform carried by the upper edge of the said basket, radially positioned legs secured to the outer side of the basket, outer leg portions swiveled to the said legs, and bearing rollers journaled in the said outer portions and engaging the interior of the boat.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
