Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN E. BEZOLD, c1t1- zen of the United States of America, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments on Player-Pianos or like Instruments, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to attach ments on keyed instruments, such as pianos, s0-called player pianos, etc., and consists of a cabinet so connected to the instrument that it can be readily swung or folded under the key board when the instrument is not in use.

With instruments having foldable pedals, as with player pianos, the cabinet may take the place of the sliding panels to conceal the pedals, and may be operatively connected to said pedals so as to fold and unfold the latter when swung into one or the other direction.

The cabinet may serve to hold music rolls, sheets or other records and the object of connecting it to the instrument is to save space for accommodating the cabinet and also enable the player to reach music sheets or rolls without leaving the instrument.

In the accompanying drawing, in which similar reference characters denote corresponding parts Figure 1 shows by way of example a front elevation of an upright player piano, the upper part of which is broken away; Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a detail.

Referring to the drawing a denotes the key board of a player piano and b the foldable frame carrying the pedal or treadle mechanism 0.

Hitherto when the instrument is not in use the foldable pedal mechanism is concealed behind sliding panels.

According to the present invention a cabinet d to receive music rolls, music sheets or any other records is suitably mounted in the instrument below the key board in such a manner as to be capable of swinging horizontally and folding underneath the key board. The cabinet may take the place of the front lateral post ordinarily arranged below the key board. There may be two cabinets, one at each end of the key board.

In the present embodiment of my invention the cabinet is provided with pivots d journaled in the bottom of the key board and in the base piece of the instrument. Hinged at e or otherwise pivotally connected to the cabinet is a member 6 in form of a board which has an upwardly projecting pin 0 adapted to engage a slanting groove or guideway a provided in the bottom of the key board, This member is adapted when the cabinet is in folded position to cover or conceal the lifted pedal or treadle mechanism.

The member a may be operatively connected to the pedal mechanism so as to fold the latter when the cabinet and member are moved into folded or closed position. To this end I employ a lever mechanism f which at one end is connected to the said cabinet by a link f and at its other end by a cord 9 or the like to the. pedal mechanism. On opening the cabinet the pedal mechanism by its own gravity may be allowed to unfold, or suitable means may be used to return it into operative position. The member may be made to cover part or the whole of the pedal mechanism.

What I claim and ters Patent is:

1. In a piano or like instrument, the combination with a foldable pedal mechanism, of a cabinet movably mounted in the instrument so as to swing horizontally and operatively connected to said pedal mechanism so as to fold underneath the key board and to simultaneously fold and conceal said pedal mechanism.

2. In a piano or like instrument, the combination with a foldable pedal mechanism, of a cabinet movably mounted in the instrument so as to swing horizontally and operatively connected to said pedal mechanism so as to fold underneath the key board and to simultaneously fold and conceal said pedal mechanism.

3. In a piano or like instrument, the combination with a foldablepedalmechanism, of a cabinet movably mounted in said instrument so as to swing horizontally and to fold underneath the key board, a swinging member carried by said cabinet, the latter being operatively connected to said pedal mechanism and said member serving to conceal said pedal mechanism when the cabinet is swung into folded position.

4. In a piano, a music cabinet pivoted bedesire to secure by Letlow the key board to swing horizontally, a foldable pedal mechanism and means operatively connecting said cabinet with said pedal mechanism, so as to fold the latter when swung into closed or folded position.

5. In a piano, a music cabinet pivoted below the key board, a member movably connectedto said cabinet so as to swing horizontally, a foldable pedal mechanism and means operatively connecting the latter to said cabinet to fold and conceal said pedal mechanism when the cabinet is swung into closed or folded position.

6. In a piano, a music cabinet pivoted below the key board, a member movably connected to said cabinet so as to swing horizontally, a guide under the keyboard for said member, a foldable pedal mechanism and means operatively connecting the latter to said cabinet, said member serving to conceal said pedal mechanism when the cabinet is swung into closed or folded position.

7. In a piano, a foldable pedal mechanism, a member pivoted below the key board to swing horizontally, means operatively connecting said. cabinet to said pedal mechanism, said member serving to conceal the latter when the cabinet is swung into folded or closed position and means for unfolding the said mechanism when said cabinet is opened.

8. In a piano, a gravity actuated foldable pedal mechanism, a cabinet pivoted below the key board to swing horizontally, and means operatively connecting said pedal mechanism to said cabinet to fold and conceal the former when the latter is swung into closed or folded position.

9. In a piano or like instrument, the combination with mechanisms for controlling the operation of the instrument, of a cabinet movably mounted in said instrument so as to swing horizontally and fold below the key board and operatively connected to said mechanisms so as to move the said mechanisms when folded and unfolded.
