Wibzesses. I ful/enlaza UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. WILLIAM GROOMES, OF PORTSMOUTH, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN ENVELOPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,180, dated June 20, 1871.
can be readily opened by steaming or moistening in any Way which will dissolve the niueilage. My invention relates to improvements in envelopes, hereinafter more fully set forth.
Description of Accompanying Drawing.
are not sealed to the ap M, but are left free to fold over the letter after its insertion into the envelope. O is the top fold ofthe envelope provided with tongues A A, having waterproof varnish on their outer and mucilage on l their inner surfaces. TheV tongues, after the insertion of the letter, (the flaps D D being turned over it,) are inserted into the openings B B o o, which are brought opposite each other. The fold G of the iiap M serves the double purpose of strengthening the envelope and forming a pocket to prevent the tongues having mucilage on their inner sides from coming in contact With the letter, While the aps DD, turned over the letter after its insertion, pre- 4vvent its ready removal.
By the employment of two tongues, A A', near the ends of the top fold C, in lieu of a single tongueV in the center of the top fold, as ordinarily used, there is more security in the fastening and greater diculty in removing a letter, as there is much greater space between a single center tongue and the outer edges of the envelope for the introduction of an instrument for the removal of a letter than When two tongues are employed.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The ap M, provided with two slits, o o, and fold Gr, in combination with the top fold O having tongues A A', and aps E E having slits B B, substantially as shown and described.
- J. WM.y GROOMES.
