rlhe present invention relates to inkstands, and consists more particularly in improvements in inkstands of the character wherein the well or bottle is arranged to be tilted to uncover the mouth thereof and permit dipping of the pen, and which, when the same is released, will automatically return to position to cover the mouth.

lt is an object of the present invention to provide an ink well of this type wherein the closure will be tight and effective when the stand is resting in normal position, and which will be readily and conveniently operated to uncover the opening and permit insertion of the pen point.

Another object of the invention resides in providing a tilting inkstand which will be constructed of few and simple parts, economical of manufacture and readily assembled and disassembled, and which, when assembled, will form an attractive article for desk use and the like.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, and in which similar reference symbols indicate correspending parts in the several views: Figure l is a side elevational view of an inkstand constructed in accordance with the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the same.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein one embodiment of the invention is illustrated, l designates a base, preferably constructed substantially annular of a casting of iron or other suitable heavy material which will form a rm stand for supporting the various parts. The tilting platform l is also preferably constructed substantially annular of some light material, advantageously aluminum, and the same is loaded or weighted at the rear thereof in any suitable manner, for instance by the lling of lead 5 here shown. Tilting platform l is arranged to receive an ink bottle or well 8, provided with a neck having an inclined mouth as shown; and, when the platform is resting in normal position the inclined mouth of the bottle is arranged to be covered by a cap 9 constructed from rubber or other suitable material. T he rubber cap 9 is formed with a step 10 adapted to be received into an aperture 11, provided in the outer end of a post 12 erected on the base 1, and preferably cast therewith. A washer 13 is preferably interposed between the cap 9 and the post 11, and surrounds the stem 10, which is constructed of a diameter slightly greater than that of the aperture 11, so as to frictionally hold the cap in place when the bottle is tilted.

1n practice the hand piece 7 is engaged by the heelV of the hand, and the lever 6 thereby depressed to tilt the platform 4f about the supporting trunnions 3, as indicated in Fig. l, whereby the neck of the bottle will be removed from the cap 9 and permit of the dipping of the pen point therein to receive the ink in the usual manner. After the dipping operation, the hand will be removed from engagement with the piece 7 whereupon the weight 5 will return the platform l to the normal position, indicated in full lines in Fig. 1, in which the open inclined mouth of the bottle will rest tightly against the cap 9 and be effectually closed thereby.
