LOCK.
1,161,553. Specification of Letters Patent- Patented Nov. 23, 1915.
Application led February 6, 1915. Serial No. 6,496.
T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HENRY G. VOIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing in New Britain, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rIhis invention relates to locks, and more particularly to the cheaper' class of mortise locks in which a bitted or winged key is adapted to operate both a latch bolt and a dead bolt from the same keyhole. The invention also refers especially to locks of this kind which are provided with a tumbler common to both bolts, and wherein provision is made for preventing the actuation of the latch bolt when the dead bolt is in its protracted position.
i The primary objects of the invention are to simplify and reduce the cost of locks of this type, and to improve the general construction and operation of devices of the class to which the invention relates.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of a lock embodying my improvements, with the cap plate removed, showing the bolts in the normal position; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of Fig. 1, showing the dead bolt protracted; and Fig. 3 is a reverse view of certain parts shown in Fig. l.
Referring to the drawing, the case 5 of the lock, which is shown as being of the customary mortise type, is equipped with a latch bolt 6 adapted to be retracted by the ordinary inside and outside knobs (not shown) actuating respectively an inside hub 7 and an outside hub'8. rIhese hubs operate upon the latch bolt through a yoke or shoe 9 of any preferred form. The latch bolt 6 has a shank 10, at the rear extremity of which is a crosshead 11. A dead bolt 12 is located below the latch bolt 6, and is adapted to be operated by a bitted or winged key inserted in a keyhole 13. The bolt 12 is provided with the usual stump or fence 14, cooperating with the customary tumbler or tumblers 15, pivoted at 16. Beneath the tumbler or tumblers 15 the bolt 12 is provided with the ordinary talons 17 adapted to be engaged by the key.
In accordance with my invention, the latch bolt is adapted to be operated by the key through mechanism which may be constructed substantially as follows: Pivoted on a post 18 in the case is a lever 20 having an upper extremity 21 located in front of the crosshead 11 of the latch bolt. Intermediate the pivot 18 and the extremity 21,`the
lever 20 is pivoted by a pin 22 to a slide 23,
guided substantially horizontally on the back of the ease between lugs 24e. This slide 23 carries a fencev 25, adapted to cooperate with an extension 26 on the upper part of the tumbler or tumblers 15, and at its lower part the slide 23 carries a rigid depending arm 27, which, in the normal position of the parts, extends into the path ofthe key bit 28, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The member 23 carrying the operating projection or arm 27 is slidable forwardly and rearwardly with the dead bolt 12, for which purpose the arm 27 is positioned between projections 29, 30 on the rear face of the dead bolt shank, and the pivot 18 for the latch-retracting lever 2O is located in a cut-away portion or notch 31 of said lever'. When the slide 23 is moved into its forward position, the latclrretracting lever is moved relative to the pivot 18, but the pivot 18 still continues to support the lever, as shown in Fig. 2. In this position, the arm 27 is out of the path of the key bit.
The operation of the improved lock will be obvious for the most part from the foregoing description. VVhen the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, and it is de sired to retract the latch bolt by means of the key, the key is inserted into the keyhole and swung into the position indicated by the dotted lines, so as to contact with the arm or projection 27, and thereby pull back the slide and retract the latch bolt. In this operation, the retracting leverl swings on the pivot 18. Before said lever can be operated, however, the tumbler must obviously be raised to disengage the fence 25 on the slide 23, and therefore a key which is not bitted to actuate the tumbler properly will not retract the latch bolt. The key bit engages the arm 27 and fully' actuates the latch bolt without contacting with. the forward talon of the dead bolt. When it is desired to pro- The projection 30 on the dead bolt contacts with the arm 27o-f slide 23 and carries said slide forwardly, as previously explained,
so as to move the arm 27 out of the path of" .the key. rl`hus if a key'is inserted at this time, it Will/be absolutely inoperative on the latch bolt. When the dead bolt is retracted, the projection 29 on its shank engages the arm 27, and carries the slide and the latchretracting lever back to ythe initial position. After the deadr bolt has been retracted, the continued rotation of the key in the same direction then retracts Vthe latch bolt. c
The advantage of my improved vconstruction resides primarily in the small number of parts required` to effect the functions stated, rand consequently in thejlowY cost at Which theV lock can be produced.
TWithout limiting `myself to the construction shown, I claim; v Y.
l. lna lock, the combinationof a latch bolt, a dead vbolt, retracting mechanism for the latch bolt, including a lever andan operating slide for said llever, iand means for moving saidflever and slide with .the dead bolt; substantially asdescribed.
. 2. ln a lock,.fthe.combinatioilV of alatch bolt, a retractingjleyer therefor, a slide to -operate saidlever, carrying' a fence,-a dead bolt carr infra fence a tumbler co eratinfr y h a h With both of said fences, and a key to operate said dead bolt and said slide; substantially as described.
8. In a lock, the combination of a latch bolt, a retracting, lever therefor, a slide pivoted to said lever and carrying a fence, a dead bolt carrying a fence, a tumbler having a portion to cooperate with the lirst fence and another portion to cooperate with thc second fence, and a key to operate said slide; substantially as described.
d. ln a lock, the combination of a latch bolt, a retracting lever therefor, a key-operated actuating member for said retracting lever carrying a fence, a dead bolt carrying a fence, and a tumbler pivoted to the lock case and having portions to coperate with the respective fences; substantially as dcscribed.
Y 5. In a lock, the combination of a latch bolt, fa dead bolt, a latch retracting lever, a pivotal mounting` for said lever on the case, with respect to which said lever is bodily movable, a slide fixedly pivoted to said lever, and vmeans for moving said lever and said slide With the dead bolt; substantially as described.
In Witness whereof, l have hereunto set my hand on the 4th day of February, 1915.
