Be it known that 1, SAMUEL BLYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowling Green, in the county of Warren and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful mproveinents in Flood- Fences, of which the following is a specilication.

This invention relates to fences and pertains especially to the class of fences con structod and arranged for liood emergencies, or for low sections of farm land where water usually destroys the ordinarv fencing.

The object of the invention is to provide a flood fence construction which shall be capable 'of operation when water pressure thereon is too great, sopas to opening a gap or section of the fence and thereby relieve the fence of water pressure.

A further object of the invention is to provide ground posts and fencel posts of special construction and coperation for the purpose of dropping one or more sections of the fence under or by reason of water pressure, and to furnish a socket and postlocking device of novel and peculiar construction and arrangement of parts.

Various other objects, advantages and improved results will be found in the practical application of the invention hereinafter fully described.

Fig. 2 is a top view showing two fence panels in dropped position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the dotted line a-a Fig. 1, with one part of the pair in dropped position.

The same reference characters denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

For the purpose of eXemplifying my invention l have shown the fence panels composed of rails 1, and wires`2, but such panels may be wholly of wire, or wholly of rails of various character.

The ground posts 3 and 4, are set into the ground in the usual manner. |llhe post i constituting the en d post of a fence line, and the post 3 being duplicated throughout the length of a fence to form the panels.

The top end of the post 3 has a concavity 5, a pair of side flanges 6, and a back portion 7. These parts form a socket for swinging posts 9, hereinafter more particularly referred to. A ange 10, projects vertically from the Vback portion 7, and forms an abutment for the swinging posts 9. rlhe end posts l are of substantially the same construction as the posts 3, but the socket is only half the size of the cavity 5; only one end post being shown.

rlfhe swinging end post 11 and all of the swinging posts 9 are of substantially the same construction, except the locking bolt 8 of the posts 11 extend through these posts. The osts 9 are arranged together' in one pair for each ground post 3, by means of a bolt 13 having a suitable nut 14:. The lower ends of the posts 9 have shoulders 15 and 16, fitting, respectively, over the end of flanged 10 projecting from the back portion 7, and over the side flanges 6 of the post 3. Ears 17 project from the lower end of the posts 9 and are pivoted in the cavity 5 by means of a bolt or pivot pin 13 extending therethrough and through the side flanges 6. rlhe inner face of each of the posts 9 is provided with a groove 19, so that when a pair of the posts are fastened together, as hereinbefore explained, the grooves form a hole for a clamping bolt 21 which also extends through a hole 22 in the abutment or flange 10. Similar bolts 23 are used for clamping the ends posts in the sockets thereof.

It will be seen that by removing the bolts 21 and 8 the fence panels thus unlocked are free to swing on the pivot bolts and drop down to horizontal position. This position yis maintained by reason of the edge of the ears engaging the outer edge of the sockets.

l do not wish to limit my invention to any particular shape, size or character of Vfencing material, nor to confine the invention in its practical construction and application, but reserve to myself the right to make such changes and variations therein as may come within the scope of the appended claim.
