Norwood. in the county of Hamilton and State of C hio have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical ProtectiveDevices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
'M present invention relates to time elein electric circuits.
For the protection of electrical apparatus included in electric circuits, it is necessary to provide means for opening circuits upon the occurrence of abnormal conditions. At the same time it desirable that the circuit should not be broken upon the occurrence of abnormal ccnditionshvhicli exist only for a brief time. Relays which are used for opening-electric circuits upon the occurrence of abnormal conditions are usually provided with retarding means of some naturetto preconditions continue for a predetermined time.
Itis the object of my invention to provide a simple, compact, and ineXpensive circuitprotectii'zg device having time element means adapted to meet all of the requirements of successful commercial operation.
The Y ious novel features of my invention will be apparent 'from the specification and drawing and will be particularly set forth in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the figure of the accompanying drawing which is a side elevation. parts being; section, and showing the preferred form of my invention.

This armature member is provided with a weight 21 which is adjustable lengthwise of the armature to render said armature responsive to overloads of diii el ent degrees. The projection 26 of the pivotally mounted lever 25 is provided at its end with a forked portion 27 which engages a piston rod 28 to transmit motion to and from a'piston 25 forming the movable member of a dash-pct 30 which also is suitably mounted on the insulating support 10. Secured to one end of piston rod '28 isa spring 31 which normally biases the piston 29 in an upward direction. The spring 31 is provided with adjustable me; s including a rod secured to one end .nf the spring 31 and which is engaged by a thumb nut 33 which bears upon the cap '34 of the dash-pot 30.
The daslrpot is provided with a liquid 35, preferably oil, in which the able, for retarding purposes. The daslrpot is also provided With a guide member 36 for the guide member having openings 37 through which the liquidmay pass when the piston 29 is moved in an up wardly 'llirection.
Under normal operating conditions 4 tie armature member will be in the position shown in the figure with the projection 22 engaging projection 24 of the lever to force and to hold down the piston 29 against the action of the stretched spring 31. This device remains in thislposition until an oven load or an abnormal circuit condition arises whereupon the armature member attracted toward its core. But in attempt ing to move toward the core the projection 22 of the armature neinber 19 engages the latch portion 38 of the lever projection 23, preventing further movement of the armathe time being. As the piston 29 is moved upward, motion is transmitted through lever projection 26, swinging the lever about its pivotal point 39 until the latch 38 has moved out of engagement with the armature projection 22, whereupon, providing the abnormal circuit condition still exists, the armature member 19 is rapidly drawn into engagement with its core 11, driving the rod 18 into engagement with the movable contact member 15 and separating contacts 13 and 15 to break the circuit. \Vhen abnormal circuit conditions have ceased to exist the armature member l9'drops away from its core and the armature projection 22 falls into engagement with and presses against lever projection 24, forcing the piston, due to the weight of the armature, downwardly against the action of the spring 31 to its normal position. The armature member 19 may be made responsive ,to abnormal circuit conditions of different degree by moving the weight 21 along said armature member 19. The time element may -be varied by ,adjusting the tension of the spring 31 through the cooperating threaded members 32 and 33. With this arrangement a circuit-protecting device is capable of respond ing to abnormal circuit conditions of different degree to make the time efiective retardation any desirable value.
There may be various modifications and arrangements other than that here shown and described, and it is my intention to cover all such modifications and arrangements which do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
\Vhat I claim as new is:
1. In a protective device for electric circuits, 1- member having a projection and being responsive to abnormal circuit conditions, a pivotally mounted member having a p01 tion thereof engageable by said projectic a to hold said pivotally mounted member in one position, said projection being adapzed to engage another portion of said pivo ally mounted member upon the occurrence of abnormal conditions, and means for noving said pivotall-y mounted memher out of engagement with said projection aftei a predetermined time to permit said first mentioned member to completely respor d to the abnormal condition.
2. In a protective dev ce for electric circuits, the combination of a member responsive to abnormal circuit conditions, a retarding ievice therefor including a dash-pot the movable member ofwhich is normally biased in one direction, and intermediate mea ns cooperating with said first mentioned mer iber and the movable member of said dasi-pot and efiective to transmit energy to torce said movable member in an opposite direction and for preventing movement of said first mentioned member during the continuance of an-overload until said movable dash-pot member has moved a predetermined distance in the direction in which it is biased.
3. In a protective device for electric circuits, the combination of a member responsive to abnormal circuit conditions, means for delaying the movement of said member upon the occurrence of abnormal circuit conditions, saidmeans including a. dash-pot the mogizible member of which is biased in onedire'ction and a pivotally mounted member normally engaging said first-mentioned member and the movable member of said dash-pot to overcome said bias, said pivotally mounted member being responsive to the ,movemeut of the movable member of the dash-pot to release said first-mentioned member only after a predetermined time.
4. In a protective device for electric-circuits, means responsive to abnormal circuit conditions for breaking a circuit, and means for delaying the movement of said respon sive means and including a dash-pot the movable member ofwhich is biased in one direction and a pivotally mounted member responsive to the movement of both the responsive means and the movable member of sad dash-pot, said pivotally mounted memher being adapted to prevent complete responsive movement of said responsive means until a certain time interval has elapsed.
5. In a protective device for electric circuits, the combination of an overload reber having a projection, means for delaying action of said movable member including a dash-pot the movable member of which is biased in one direction, and a pivotally mounted member having a plurality of projections one of which is normally engaged by said first-mentioned movable member and another of which engages the movable member of said dash-pot, and still another one of which is adapted to prevent movement of said first-mentioned movable member in response to an overload until said pivotally mounted member is rotated a predeterminedamount by the movable member of said dash-pot. 6. In a protective device for electric circuits, the combination of an overload responsive device including a movable member adapted to break the circuit, and means for'preventing said movable member from breaking said circuit upon the occurrence of an overload until a certain predetermined time has elapsed, said means including a dash-pot the movable member of which is biased in one direction and a'lever provided with three'projections two of which are sponsive device including a movable memadapted to be engaged by said first-mentinned movable member and the third of tion adapted to be engaged which is responsive to the movements of the movable member of said dash-pct, one of said projections preventing the movement of said first-mentioned movable member in response to an overload until the movable member of said dash-pot has rotated said lever a predetermined amount. 7. In a protective device for electric circuits, the combination of means responsive lever having a projection'normally engaged by the projection on said first-mentioned movable member to transmit energy to hold said-movable dash-pot member against the action of said spring, said lever havmg a second projection with a latch porby the projection of said first-mentioned movable member upon the occurrence of an abnormal circuit condition, whereupon said movable dash-pot member is actuated by the spring to gradually draw the latch portion of said lever out oi. engagement with the projection of said first-mentio11ed movable member to permit said first-mentioned movable member to break the circuit.
8. In a protective device for electric circults, a member movable in response to ab--' normal circuit conditions, a member biased to one position and having a retarded movement toward such positiomconnecting means between said movable member and said biased member, said movable member dur ing its movement in one direction actuating said connecting means to'move said. biased member against its normal bias, and said connecting means being effective by reason of its connection With said biased member to hold said movable member against complete movement in response to abnormal circuit conditions until said abnormal conditions have existed for a predetermined time.
9. In a protective device for electric circuits, a member movable in response to abnormal circuit conditions, means for normally holding said member against such movement, retarding means normally biased to one position, said holding means being operated by said member to actuate said retarding means against its normal bias, and
- said holding being effective on the occurrence of abnormal circuit conditions until said retarding means has moved a predetermined distance toward biased position.
10. In a protective device for electric circuits, a member movable in response to abnormal circuit conditions, and means normally biasedto. one position and having a retarded movement to such position, said means being actuatable to another position by said member and being effective to hold said member against etl'ective movement on the occurrence of abnormal circuit conditions until said conditions have existed for a predetermined time.
