To all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that 1, PAUL lil. Finn-inn. a citizen of the United States residing at Milwaukee, in the county oi Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electric Switches, of which the following is a full, clear. concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing; forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in electric switches.
My invention is particularly applicable to circuit breakers including an electro-mag netically set switch and means for causing the opening of said switch upon the occurrence of abnormal conditions in the circuit controlled thereby. My invention, however is not limited in its application to such devices.
For the purpose of disclosing the nature, characteristic features and advantages of my invention I hall describe the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings which embodies my invention in one form. It should be understood, however, that my invention is not limited to the specific embodiment thereof selected for the purpose of illustration but is susceptible of embodiment in various other forms.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is the front elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is the vertical sectional view taken on line 22 Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the switch arms.
Fig. i is a diagrammatic view showing the device used as a circuit breaker.
Briefly described the (.evice selected for the purpose of illustration comprises a solenoid-operated switch with a releasable connection between the switch and the plunger of its operating solenoid and an overlozu device adapted to break said connection to allow the switch to open while the solenoid remains energized.
The several parts of the device are mounted upon an insulating supporting panel 1. The switch is shown as being provided with arms 2 and3. - Thus, upon deinergization of the solenoid its plunger would be automatically relocked tothe switch members. The switch would then be in condition for further operation.
An overload device 28 is provided for actuating the hook member to .release theswitch from the solenoid plunger. This device may be conveniently mounted upon the front of the magnet frame 15 as illustrated. It comprises a magnet M having pole pieces 29 and 30 and an armature 31. The armature 31 is fulcrumed to the pole piece 30 and. is provided with an extension 32 projecting into proximity with a lug 33 on the hook member 18. The arrangement is such that when the solenoid 14 is energized and the magnet M attracts its armature the extension 32 of the armature strikes the lug 33 disengaging the hook member from. the roller 20 with the results above described. Mounted upon the front of the overload device is a curved calibrating plate 34: having at its lower end a projection 35 carrying a set screw 36 for limiting. the ward movement of the armature 31 oil the The adjustment of the screw 36 affords a simple means of calibrating" the overload device to respond under the desired conditions.
In the diagrammatic View, Fig. 4, l have for the purpose of simplifying the same merely shown the switch as provided with one contact arm it being understood that device may be provided with either one off plurality of arms as desired. The deice is illustrated as used for connecting a translating circuit 37, 38, to a power circnit L-LC The switch is adapted to be set by closure or" a normally open push button 39. This completes a circuit from power line L through said push button by conductor ll) through the solenoid winding let by conductor 41 to power line L. This completes the connection of the line of the translating circuit to the power circuit throughthe overload magnet M and through the switch arm 2 to the line L, the line 37 of the translating circuit being permanently connected to the line L. Immediately upon this circuit being closed acircuit is power line L through down- V oscillation therewith,

Assuming now that the overload magnet M responds and releases the switch arm 2 from the plunger of the solenoid 14 in the manner previously set forth, the switch arm would immediately open disconnecting the translating circuit from the power circuit.

The switch 2 may be opened at'will by pressing the push button 43 thereby interrupting its maintaining circuit.
It will thus be seen that the device is admirably suited for circuit breaker service.
It obviates the necessity for using the overload device for making or breaking circuit and further obviates the necessity of any special provision to prevent automatic resetting of the of the overload device to normal position.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows 1. In combination, an oscillatable bar, an operating arm and carried thereby for movement therewith, a solenoid having a plunger terminating adjacent said operating arm for actuating the latter, a hook carried by said plunger for normally maintaining arm, and electro-responsive means for mterrupting said connection under predetermined electrical conditions.
2. In combination, and an operating arm mounted for-,joint oscillation, a solenoid for actuating the same, means carried by the solenoid plunger for directly connecting the same Withsaid operating arm, and means for automatically 1 15 interrupting said connection under predetermined conditions.

In combination, a vertically disposed supporting base, a switch operating arm pivotally mounted thereon, a solenoid mounted on said base above the pivotal point of said member, a direct operative connection between the plunger of said solenoid and said member comprising a catch on one biased to engage a shoulder on the other, an overload magnet having an armature member constituting means to trip said catch while said solenoid is energized, and adjustable means for calibrating the response of said armature member, said adjustable means, said armature member and said operative connection between the plunger of said solenoid and said switch being disposed perpendicularly with respect to said base and all accessible from below said solenoid and said magnet.
