To install in position the injector hereinafter described, the pipe unions 10 and 11' are connected with the steam delivery pipe of the boiler controlled by a throttle valve ot' suitable character, and to the water-delivery pipe of the boiler. The injector body 12 is interposed between two unions, and is connected toA each by collar nuts 13. The body 12 is similarly 'connected to the union 'ift with which the water-supply pipe is con nected, and this by means of a third collar nut 1 5.
The body 12 is longitudinally bored to iorm a main passage therethrough, providing a normally straight-line communication between the steam pipe and union 10 and the water i'eed pipe and union 11. Lateral bores disposed at right-angles to the main bore i'orm the water intake chamber 16 and i the overflow chamber 17. Intermediate the Speeication of Letters Patent.

water intake chamber 16 and the overliow chamber 17, the wall of the body is preferably thickened to form a tapped section 18, into which is screwed as a plug, a lifting tube 19. i
By threading the lifting tube 19'and the thickened portion of the injector body, there is provided an opportunity to adjust the lifting tube 19 with relation to a steam tube 20 and a nozzle extension 21. In .this Inanner, the air gap between the delivery end of the nozzle 21 and the intake end of the lifting tube 19 is increased or diminished. The
steam tube 2O is provided with an annular flange 22, an annular pocket or seat for which vis formed in the end of the body 12, 'to be drawn against the union 10 by the collar nut 13, to form a solid and tight joint. It will be seen that the construction described provides for the ready and rapid boiler with an annular flange-26, which rests on a shoulder provided on the end of the body 12, as a seat for said flange to regulate the extension of the tube 23 within` said body. The outer end of the flange performs a -like office for the flange 27 on the delivery tube 24:. Both anges are clamped tightly between the body 12 and the lunion 11 by the collar Inut 13.
The cage 25 is bored to provide a chamber allowing ample space between the inner wall thereofl and the outer wall of the tube 24. The chamber in said cage 25 is normally in open communication with the boiler pipe or union 11 thereof through orifices 28 formed in the flange 27. A similar function is performed by spill-holes 29, which 'are bored through the base of the tube 23 and normally form communicating passages between the overflow chamber 17 and the chamber within the cage 25.
Under normal conditions, the longitudinal bore or passage formed thereby in the body 12 is in open'communication with the overflow chamber 17. `Likewise, the interior of the cage 25 is in open communication with said chamber. It is to cutout the overiiow l chamber, during the'delivery of 1water to 4the boiler, that I provide the main ring valve 30 and an auxiliary ring valve 31.
To receive the ring'valve 30, the upper reduced section of the tube 23 is provided with a cylindrical shape to form a guide for said ring valve. The valve 30 fits said reduced section, and is machined to provide a fiat. surface 32. A valve seat is ground on the lower edge of the fiange 33, which iiange is extended partly across the overow chamber 17 to foi-in a vacuum. 'chamber 34, and at the lower endthereofto permit-the grinding of -a seat for the valve 30. When not in service position for closing communication between the chambers 1 7 and 34, the valve 30 rests on a shoulder 35.
The upper edge of the ring valve 31 is ground to form an inclined valve surface 36, while the upper end of the chamber formed in the cage 25 is correspondingly groundto forni a seat for the valve. When, in service position, the valve 31 .is lifted to its seat, the spill-holes 29 are closed, and communication between thel chamber inside of the cage 25 and the overflow chamber 17 is cut 0H: Thus, when the v alves .30 and 31 are both in service position, or raised to their respective seats, the overflow chamber 17 is vcompletely cut off, and so remains during the delivery of water from the watersu ply pipeto the boiler feed pipe.
ith an apparatus constructed andarranged as described, the operation is as folloWs When the steam is permitted to flow, it passes under-'pressure through the tube 20 and the nozzle extension 21. thereof to the lifting tube 19. The interior of the `nozzle 21 is contracted or throated adjacent the tube 20, and expanded outward to the delivery end adjacent the tube 19.v The steam, being permitted'toexpand, clears the nozzle with slightly increased speed and the air gap between the end of said nozzle and the tube 19. The air gap between the ends of Said tube and' said nozzle is Within thel water intake chamber 16. If said chamber is filled with air, this is drawn by the onrush of the steam into the lifting tube 19 until a rarefaction of air is produced in said chamber siifiicient to lift the Water in the water-supply pipe to Hood said cham,-
` ber 16.l Before the Water enters the chamber 1 6, steam and the air lwhich are in the chamber 16 Iand pipe connected therewith are carried into the chamber 34, spreading therein around the tube 23, to pass therefromv through the overflow chamber 17 to the open air. vThis action continues until the air has been exhausted from the chamber 16 and replaced' by water. Thereafter the steam drives the water, instead of the air, through the lifting tube 19. The de'- livery cud of the tube 19 is slightly contracted to deliver the water as a jet within the flared end of thc combining tube 23. The combining tube 23 conveys the water and steam as a solid column and delivers the saine to the delivery tube` 24, from :L
whence said water and steam enters the boiler feed pipe by way of the union 11.
During the inoperative period of the injector, it will bepunderstood, a. certain proportion of air is held in the boiler feed pipe.

The air thus drawn or expelled through the boiler feed pipe is delivered throughthe spill-holes 29. When the air has been ythus removed'from the feedpipe and the admission thereof to the boiler has been thereby avoided, the water Hows into the chamber of the cage 25, seeking ex liaust by way of the spill-holes 29. The delivery of the Water is avoided by the oper ation of the ringvalve 31. The valve 31 is lifted from the shoulder 38 on which it normally rests, as shown by the dotted lines iu Fig. 1, by the outward rush, in the first instance, of the air and the water following the same.
In the manner above described, it will be observed, the delivery of steam or water from the overiiow opening 17 is completely avoided during the delivery of water from the water-supply pipe to the boiler feed. pipe. If there is a break in the operation of the injector, the ring valves 30 and 31 do not operate, and the steam delivered to the body of the injector has free access .to the overflow chamber 17 and thence to the open air, advising in this manner the engineerpf the failure of the injector to operate.
The perfect operation of the injector is dependent in a large measure upon the gaps between the delivery end of the nozzle extension 21 and the receivingr end of the tube 19, and between the delivery end of the combining tube 23 andthe receiving eurl of the delivery tube 24. AS the conditions are not permanent, the means herein provided; to

An injector, comprising a body portion bored to form a longitudinal passage, a vacuum chamber therein and an open-ended overflow chamber disposed perpendicular to and opening from said longitudinal passage; a combining tube mounted in said longitudinal passage and extending across said overfiow chamber and into said vacuum chamber, said tube having spill-holes formed therein and approximately parallel to the passage in said tube, for' the delivery of air from the boiler feed pipe to which the injector is attached; a delivery tube co-axially disposed with said combining tube and spaced apart therefrom to provide a suction gap to draw the air from said boiler feed pipe; means for adjusting the relation between said tubes to vary the suction gap; a relatively light ring' valve mounted on said combining tube and operable by the suction in said vacuum chamber to close said vacuum chamber and a ring valve guidedly mounted on said delivery tube and operable by the suction of said gap to close said spill-holes.

vacuum chamber therein, and an open-ended overflow chamber disposed perpendicular to and opening from said longitudinal passage; a combining tube mounted in said longitudinal passage and extending across said over-` flow chamber and intosaid vacuum chamber` saidtube havirgspil-l-holes formed therein and approximately parallel to the passage in said tube, for the delivery of air from the boiler; feed pipe to which the injector is attached; a delivery tube co-axially disposed with said combining'tube and spacedapart therefrom to` provide a suction gap to draw the air from said Yboiler feed pipe; means foradjusting the relation between said tubes to vary the suction gap; a relatively light ring valve mounted on 'said combining tube and operable 'by the suction in said vacuum chamber to close `said vacuum chamber; a ring valve guidedly mounted on said delivery tube and operable by the suction of said -gap to close said spill-holes;.a water supply; and a nozzle co-axial with the cone bining tube .and vacuum chamber, for the delivery of steam and water to said combining tube through said vacuum chamber.

An injector, comprising a body portion bored to form a longitudinal passage, a vacuum chamber therein and an open-ended overflow chamber disposed perpendicular to and opening from said longitudinal passage` a combining tube permanently mounted iii said longitudinal passage,extending across said overflow chamber and into said vacuum chamber, said tube having spill-holes formed therein and approximately parallel to the passage in said tube, for the delivery of air from the boiler feed pipe to which the injector is attached; a delivery tube coaxially disposed with said combining tube .and spaced apart therefrom to provide a suction gap to draw the air from said boiler feed pipe; and a ring valve guidedly mount* ed on said delivery tube and `operable by the suction of said gap to close said spillholes. l
