To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. Hmns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Hinge for Celluloid. Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to-a hinge for celluloid articles, such as tooth-brush holders, toilet cases, and the like, but is capable of general use.
The principal objects ofthefinvention are to provide an inexpensive hinge which will not involve'the 1 boring ordrilling of the members to be connected together, in which the hinge pin itself will be renderedinvisible, and by which thecelluloid articles to be connected will be reinforced at the edges which are connected by the hinge.
The invention also involves other advantages as will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a plan of a preferred embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a similar View with the parts separated and ready to be assembled; Fig. 3 is a plan of the blank for producing one of the hinge members; Fig. l is a plan of a blank for producing the other hinge member; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. l.
The hinge is shown as used for connecting two flat celluloid members A and B. These are connected by two hinge pieces 0 and D and a hinge pin E. The two hinge pieces C and D are formed by stamping out pieces of sheet celluloid in the forms indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. The piece C is rectangular in shape, and is provided with two rectangular openings 0 therein equally spaced from the ends. The member D is of the same size and shape as the member C but is provided with a central opening 03 therein of the same width as the openings 0 and of a length equal to the distance between the openings 0. At the ends of this opening cl are two spaces of the same length as the openings 0 and beyond them are a pair of notches (Z of the same width as the openings 61 and extending to theend of the piece D. In the formation of the hinge these two members are both doubled on a longitudinal central line in such a way that the flanges which are formed by their edges are at adistance apart equal to the thickness of the members A and B. This forms loops of the solid parts of each of the members Cand D at the center. In order'to connect these two parts together the hinge pin E is passed through these loops as is clearly shown in Fig. 2.. This hinge pin is-made of a length less than the height or length of the hinge members. This hinge piece consisting of these three members G, D and E can be made as a separate article of manufacture and sold to the parties who desire to use them to be assembled in such way as maybe desired, but preferably it is applied directly to the article on which it is to be used. For that purpose the member A is applied to the member D so that its edge extends into the space between the flanges and abuts against the convex portions of the member G which are on that side of the hinge pin. The contacting surfaces of the members Aand D are cemented together so as to form a complete body of which the hinge member is a solid part.
