JAMES F. LOOKWOOD, OF TAYLORVILLE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROOF-GUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,072, dated June 20, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. LOOKWOOD, of Taylorville, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Gutter for Roofs of Buildings, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in providing the roof of a building with a gutter of sheet metal, the outer side or curb of Whioh'is curved in form, and the bed is a plane setting to the roof and extending up the same a short distance so as to form a channel, as herein described.
In the accompanying drawingillustrating my invention and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved gutter. Fig. 2 is an end view of same, illustrating its relative position to roof.
General Description. In the drawing referred to, letter A represents the curb or outer side of the gutter, curved in form, and standing on the roof a short distance from. the eaves, as seen in Fig. 2. B designates the bed, which is made flat to set to the roof, up which the plane of the bed is made to extend under the shingles above to a point, 0, higher than the level of the outer side A, so that in case of flood the water would run over the side A instead of setting back on the roof above the extent of the metallic gutter, (see dotted lines in Fig. 2,) the water being thus. prevented from working under the shingles above and damaging the building. The gutter, being constructed of sheet metal, isplaced on the roof above the first course of shingles at the eaves, as seen in Fig. 2. The side A may be supported in its position by the concave board a,-to which it is seated, when so constructed, and prevented from dislocation by strong winds by the braces e on the inside and the strips 0 attached outside and lapping to the top. The gutter may be fastened to the roof in an adjustable manner by means of the screws '21 passing through diagon'al slots m in the sheet metal, which, when the gutter is properly adjusted, is allowed to expand and contract with difi'erent temperatures of weather. The shingles on the roof extend down over the sheetmetal to the vertical edge n.
