Be it known that I, Arman S. LYHNE, a
citizen of the United State's, residingflatj of Fairfield, State of Bridgeport, count Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Cases for Pocket Flash-Lights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a strong, durable and inexpensive slipjoint case for pocket flashlights, the parts of which may be readily drawn and formed from blanks of sheet metal and which will be flat, smooth and round-cornered, that is without corners or angular projections of any kind, so that it will be pleasant to hold in the hand and not destructive to pockets when carried therein.
\Vith these and other objects inview I have devised'the novel flashlight case which I will now describe, referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and using reference characters to indicate the several parts Figure l is an elevation of my novel flashlight case, as in use; Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of the case showing a lamp and battery in place; Fig. 3 a detail sectional view on an enlarged scale illustrating steps in the process of manufacture; Fig. i a similar view showing the manner in which the lamp holder is locked in place, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of the body member of the ca% detached.

The body member, cover member and the lamp holder are drawn and formed from blanks of sheet metal. The body member 15 integral and its open end is reduced in diameter outward from a shoulder 15, the shoulder and reduced end bein formed by diework and the member being formed complete from the blank. This reduced endis adapted to pass into the open end of the cover member, the edge of which abuts against the shoulder, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that when the members are placed in engagement the outside of the case is perfectly smooth, there being simply a line at the intersection of the edge of the'cover member with the shoulder of the body member, as in ordinary'slip cover boxes. So far as I am aware, however, no box or case of.

The lam holder is provided with a recess 32 to receive a lamp in the usual manner and with the usual rolled thread 18 which is engaged by the thread upon the base of the lamp. Surrounding the lamp recess in the holder is an outwardly extending flange 19 which in the assembled position, as in Fig. 3, is adapted to rest upon flange 16 of the body member. The lamp holder is locked to the body member by a blow of a punch suitably shaped to close the metal of the rib over inward and downward upon flange 19 so that said flange is firmly gripped between the folded rib, indicated by 20 in Fig. l, and flange 16.
21 and 22 denote the contacts of the battery, one of which is adapted in use to permanently engage the center contact 23 of the lamp, the other being adapted to be engaged by a sliding contact 2st to close the circuit. The sliding contact is operated by means of a stud 25 which passes through a slot 26 in the body member and is provided with an external head 27. The sliding contact is provided near its other end with a slot 28 through which a stud 29 seated in the cover member projects. This stud serves as a guide for the sliding contact and the outer end thereof comprises a boss 30 which cooperates with a depression 31 in the inner side of the cover, member to lock the two members together under the ordinary conditions of use, that is, so that the members will not-become separated in carrying or handling but permitting the cover member to be removed by a slight pull when it is necessary to renew the battery.
Having thus described my invention I claim 1. A slip-joint case of 'the character described comprising a cover member having an internal depression, an integral body member having a shoulder and its open end reduced in diameter from the shoulder outward to enter the cover member, a lamp holder secured at the closed end of the body member, a sliding contact having a slot and a guide stud passin through the slot, the outer end of said stu forming a boss adapted to engage the depression in the cover member to retainsaid membersinengugement.
