To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. WELLING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shade or Globe Holders; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a side view of a shade or globe holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a side view at rightangles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 an underside view of the same with the shade-gripping fingers in their locked or holding positions. Fig. 1 a similar view with the shade-gripping arms in the open position.
This invention relates to an improvement in shade or globe holders, and particularly to that class which comprise a cup-shaped socketor holder with a wire shade or globe gripping device.
The object of this invention is to provide a wire gripping device which will firmly grip the globe or shade when inserted and which will provide a free opening for the insertion of a shade or globe; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a shell 2 of any approved design having a flange 3 corresponding in diameter to the shade or globe to be held. 9n opposite sides of the shell are short slots 4, 5, while midway between them are perforations 6, 7, and 'op posits the perforations are long slots 8, 9, the inner ends of-which may intersect. Combined with the shell thus formed I employ two gripping arms .10, 1.1. The end 12 of one arm is turned outward through the perration 6; is formed in line with slot 4; vith a sharp t -sh'aped bond 13, and at its later end which projects through the slot 5, with a finger-piece 1e. 13 and finger-piece 1{1 is a bend or knee 15 which has a bearing against the inner face of the shell forming a fulcrum, so to speak, on which the gripping-arm or lever 10 turns, and so that when the finger piece 141. is moved, the end v12 will be projected I outward through the perforation so as to permit the ready introduction of a globe The other arm 11 is a duplicate of the arm- 10 having an end 16 projecting through the perforation 7, a bend 17 proj ecting through the slot 5 and a finger-piece 18 projecting through the slot 8, and the bend or knee 19 between the bend 17 and the finger-piece 18. By drawing the fingerpieces' 14: and 18 together the wires or arms are separated so as to permit the ready introduction of a shade or globe, that is, the't'ulcrums 15 and-19 bearing against the shell cause the bends 13 and 17 to move in the slots 4. and 5 and push the ends 12 and 16 outward so that the portions of the wires between the ends and the bends ill be moved toward the shell as shown in Fig. 4, and when the finger-pieces are released they will separate so as to permit the arms to spring into close relation with the shade and support the same at several points in the circumference.
I claim l A shade or globe holder comprising a shell formed on opposite sides with short slots with perforationsbetween said short slots, and with long slots opposite the perforations, combined with shade-gripping arms having ends extending through said perforations, bends extending through the short slots, finger-pieces extending through the long slots, said arms formed with knees between the bends at the sides andfthe timer-pieces.
