BED STRUCTURE.
Application filed August 18, 1914.
A further object is to provide astructureV of the kind specified, which shall include a plurality of portions and.instrumentalities, each adapted to be connected to an adjacent portion or instrumentality whereby they may all be conveniently positioned and operated without the necessity of employing tools, etc.
A still further object is to provide a structure which comprises a plurality of portions but which are all self-contained and so related as to be, in part at least, automatic in their movement when beingpositioned to convert the table into a bed structure.
Still another object within the contemplation of the invention is so to construct and relate the parts that the structure will sustain the required weight, as a bed, and yet be foldable so that the elements of the bed structure will be housed and out of view.
The invention in general seeks to provide a` combined bed and table structure which is ornamental in appearance and yet which will, in practical use, possessa high degree of strength and durability and which, structurally considered, will beV of the greatest simplicity. f
Other objects and advantages will in part be obvious from the annexed drawings andv will also be in part pointed out in the following description.
The invention resides broadly in the features of construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts, and in the various relative aggroupments thereof, all as will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of application of which will be indicated in the claims hereto appended.
In the Vaccompanying drawings forming a part of thisdisclosure, a rpossible utilization of the invention is illustrated; but itisto be Speccation of Letters Eatent.
` Patented Nov. 16,1915.
serial No. 857,360.
understood that the drawings are merely illustrative and that other possible embodiments, employing the underlying principles of the invention, fall within the spirit thereof and the objects Ycontemplated thereby.
In these drawings: Figure 1 isa view in perspective of a combined table and bed, constructed in accordance with my invention, in closed position; Fig. 2 is a view in vertical transverse section of the same, in open position; Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the same closed; Fig. 4 is a view in plan of the structure, in open position; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view, in vertical section, showing-one ofthe top-portions, a section of one of the .side-portions, and one `of the spring-positioning-members, all in closed posit-ion; Fig.y 6 is a similar view of these parts in open position; and Fig. 7 is a fragv mentary view of a section of one ofthe spring-positioning members as mounted on one of the top-portions.
Referring to the drawings, it will be noted that the reference-character l designates, generally, the base-portion which, in this instance, includes a horizontal piece suitably secured to the inner walls of two upstanding end-portions or uprights 2, 2 of appropriate form and dimensions. Relatively, the base and two end-portions are rigidly secured together and constitute the supporting mediaV of the structure.
Spaced apart and pivoted at their .edges to the uprights 2 are two side or mattresssustaining portions 3, 3. Normally, these portions are upright and occupy a position at yright-angles to the end-portions 2. Being disposed on an axis,.indicated at' 4, intermediate of their edges, each 'portion is adapted to be independently rocked on its respective .axis into a horizontal position and, thus, at substantially right-angles Vto the normal, as seen in Fig. 2. To sustain these mattress-sustaining portions 3 in horizontal position, means are, of course, pro-` vided; and, in this instance, I elect to hinge upon each of these portions a pair of swinging panels 5 preferably made to simulate; or
in imitation of', the outer front portion of a drawer. These panels may lie against the outer surface of each ofthe side-portions or,
as shown in this instance, are cut out of? the same. The hinges Gxpermit them to' swing downwardly when the side-portions 3 are disposed in their horizontal position, as shown' in Fig. 2i Toholdthexn in normal positionfthat is, in the position shown Fig. 1, a locking-device is provided for each panel, the same consisting, in this instance, of a spring-actuated plunger7 mounted on the inner face ofthe side-portion and adapted to engage a hajsp or hook 8 carried by the end of the panel. As will presently be explained, these locking devices are adapted to be automatically operated to release the panels so that they'may, by gravity, swing on their axes. These panels, constituting legs, support the outer parts of the sideportions. rThe rocking portions are, of course, sustained also on theirv pivots 4. It is also desirable to provide for additional support of said rocking or side-portions, adjacent their inner ends. To this end, I' provide a manually rotatable nmember 9, 'movably attached to the inner wall of each endportion 2, and having` its lower part enlarged to provide a portion-engaging section 10, the shoulder 11 of which is adapted to underlie the lower surfaces of the edge Sections of the rocking portions 3. When the rocking portians occupy their horizontal position :(as shown in F ig. 2) their proximate edges arequite close together.` They are, however, sufficiently spaced'to'permit the uppersection of the member 9 tooccupy a position between them so that they may rest upon the said shoulders 11 when the enlarged section thereof is disposedso that its flat side is in parallelism with the wall of the end-portion 2.` `IVhenever, however, the flat side is given a half-turn, it will aline with the space between theproximate ends of the rocking portions torelease them and permit themto berocked intotheir upright position.
I have now described only those parts of the mattress-supporting structure which include the rocking portions 3 and the various meansfor supporting these portions in horizontal position. Additional mattress-sup porting structure may, however-,be provided; and, in this instance, includes two top-portions 12 which, as illustrated, are suitably hinged at the upper ends of the rocking side-portions 3, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The axis of each of these top-portions is formed at 13 so that, when said topportion occupies its horizontal position, one section (12a) extends beneath the engaging surface of the portionB and is thereby sustained. f
`As shown in Fig. 5,. the top-portions 12 normally rest upon the headed end of the plunger v7A of the panel locking device. Vhenever the top-portion is .rocked on its axis, it releases the plunger. andit will, under the action ofy its spring, move out off the hasp 8 and release the `panel so that it will drop down. Qn the underside ofY each of-y these top-,portions is ia spring-positioning''V and holding memberl 14:, which" (Ein this' inl-' stance) has two end-sections 14a and a side section 14h and it is open at one side, thus making it a' three-sided structure. This member is slidable, and to this end, is mounted at each end in grooved guide-ways 15 suitably attached to the top-portions. Y
Pivotally connected to board-runners 3a of the side-portions 3, and alsoto the inember le is a link 16. By means of these links, the members 14 are'm'aintained in proper juxtaposition to they respective ends of the side-members 3. i y
, Suitably mounted on the inner walls of the end-portions 2, near the top thereof, are limit-blocks 17 which serve to limit the closing movements of the side-portions 3, the edges of they runner-boards 3a abutting against the blocks. Should the leg-panels 5 fail to position themselves when the-rocking-portions 3 are rocked on their pivots, and in order, therefore, to relieve saidk pivots from strain in that event, I may, if desired, provide a safety-device, in the form of a block 18 mounted on the inner wall of each end-portion 2 and in such location that the upper edges of the board-runners 3a will abut against 'said blocks and thereby ybe limited in` their movement. Suitably secured in position so as to be sustained by the rocking side-portions 3 are springstructures 19. also carry auxiliary spring-structures 20. Upon these spring-structures are multi. part mattresses 21, 21, the part of each section beingv connected. as by the web 22 of the ticking. To bridge the gapl 23 ,between the auxiliary spring-structure'20 and the main spring-structure 19, a metallic plate 24 is provided and the mattressA rests upon this. as shown kin Fig.V 2.
Nhen the various portions are folded to form a table, a housing 25 is formed between The movable members 14 i their walls; and in this the mattress is likeit may be utilized in connection with otherV y forms of tables.
From the foregoing, it will be perceived that I have succeeded in devising a coinbined bed and table which is well adapted to achieve the several objects and ends in view.
The structure is simple and compact in form and attractive in appearance.
As many changes can be made in the foregoing construotion, and many widely differ- 'cnt embodiments of the invention can be made without departing from the spiritV thereof, it is intended that all matter contar-inea in. the foregoing' description ana upstanding shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in any limiting sense. Itis also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic as well the specific features of the invention.
