Ween-BENCH. I
. Application fiieaEebruarx 12, 1915, Serial No.
To all whom it may concern: 1 I 1 Be it knownthat I, ATHERTON D. Convniisn, a Cit-M6111. of. the United States of America, and a resident of Winchendomin The invention relates to work benchesand,
has for its object the provision of a bench thatban be readilyfolded up so as to occupy but little room when not in use.
The invention consists principally in a rear frame having side members and a bench member hinged thereto, all of which may be folded against the rear frame when not in use, and may readily be placed in position for use and rigidly locked together in the latter position.
lhe invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter given.
Of the drawings: Figure 1 represents a front view of a work bench in position for use. Fig. 2 represents an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 represents a front elevation of the same when folded. Fig. 4 represents a vertical section of the same, the cutting plane being on line 4.4. on rlg. 3, and Fig. 5 represents a horizontal sectional detail, the cutting plane being on line 55 on Fig. 1, said figure being drawn to an enlarged scale. Similar characters designate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In the drawings, 10 is a rear .frame constructed of two uprights 11 connected together near the bottom thereof by a bar 12 secured to the rear face thereof and by a bar 13 at the upper end thereof. To the rear face of the upper ends of the uprights 11 is secured a backboard 14 forming a receptacle 15 to hold the working tools. This board may have secured thereto a shelf l5 having a plurality of openings 16 therethrough to receive the working tools. Hinged at 17 to the inner faces of the up rights 11 are the side members 18, each provided with a leg 19. The upper horizontal portion of each of the side members 18 is provided with the slot 20 extending upwardly from the edge thereof and the lower horizontal member 21 of the side members 18 Specification of Letters'Patent,
Patented Nov. is, rare.
is provided with a supporting cleat 22.-
Whenthfi ide. members 18 are. moved about the xe of theh i g s nto positions pen p sdicular. o th re r frame '10. a shel 23 hinged at 24: to the bar into hqri-zental, position, ontothe cleats 22, as lndicated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
I 12, may be moved interposed between the'upri-ghts 11 and t intermediate the ends thereof is a crossbar 25, to the under face of which is hinged at 26 the table or bench proper 27. To the under'face of this table or bench 27 is hinged at 28 the bar 29 provided in its under edge and at either end thereof with the slot 30, in each of which is pivoted at 31 the threaded bolt 32 adapted to be moved about its pivot into one of the slots 20 of a side frame 18. When thus positioned the side frames may be clamped securely to the bar 29 by means of the, clamping nuts 33. When thus clamped a very rigid bench is obtained adapted for many uses.
When the use of the work bench is not desired, the table or bench proper 27 may be folded up into a vertical position to close the receptacle 15, the shelf 23 be moved into a vertical position as shown in Fig. 4, and
the side frames 18 then moved about the y axes of the hinges 17 against the front faces of the rear frame 10, thus causing the work bench to occupy a very little space when stored away. A further advantage of a bench of this character is in reducing the cost of transportation, the" benches being shipped in folded position as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, thus reducing the cost of transportation to a minimum.
Benches constructed in this manner are primarilv intended for use by children in.
obtaining an education in manual training,
but it is obvious that benches on a larger scale may be constructed in a similar manner equally as well.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of this invention will be fully understood from the foregoing description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: 7 r
