UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE E. DOELGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINATION WORK-BENCH AND TOOL-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,782, dated July 28, 1896. Application filed May 21, 1896. Serial No. 592,498. (No model.) I I T0 at whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, THEODORE E. DOELGER, a citizen of Germany, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination \Vork-Bench and Tool-Box, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined workbench and tool-cabinet for cabinet-making and carpentering work, said bench being so constructed that it can be readily inclosed in such a manner that a cabinet-like structure is obtained, or it may be changed into a workbench with all the tools ready for use whenever the same are required; and the invention consists of a combined work-bench and tool-cabinet which comprises a work-bench, drawers below the same for tools, hardware, &c., a hinged vertical front lid at one side of said drawers, a vertical front lid at the opposite side of the same, a hinged side lid to which the latter front lid is hinged, a transverse or horizontal hinged lid at the upper part of the front above the drawers, and a hinged top lid extending over the top of the bench, the upper edges of the front and the side lids.
The invention consists, further, of certain details of construction, which will be fully describedhereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved work-bench and tool-cabinet, shown in closed position, so as to have the appearance of a cabinet. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bench with the parts shown in open position, so as to be used for work. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the bench, shown in closed position on line 3 3, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre= sponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a work-bench, such as is used by cabinetmakers, carpenters, and other woodworkers. Below the bench proper are arranged drawers B B, which are gradually increased in size from the upper toward the lower end, and which serve for the storage of tools, 850. used by cabinet-makers, carpenters, &c. At one side of the said drawers B is hinged to the corner of the bench a narrow vertical front lid 0, back of which are arranged a number of smaller drawers 0 and shelves (3 for screws, nuts, and other articles. The lefthand side and the back of the working bench are closed by walls W W, respectively, the rear wall W extending sufficiently toward the right, so as to close up the vise V. The right-hand side wall or lid D is hinged to the rear wall of the structure, and adapted to be moved in a forward direction so as to close the right-hand side of the bench. The outer end of the side lid D is provided with a narrow vertical front lid D, which corresponds in width and general appearance to the front door 0, so as to impart to both sides of the front of the bench a symmetrical appearance when the same is closed up.
Above the drawers is arranged a transverse front lid E, which is hinged and can be dropped into lowermost position, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to expose thereby the top of the bench. A top lid F is hinged to the rearwall of the bench and adapted to extend over the top of the bench and over the upper edges of the side walls, said top lid being provided with a front and two side rails f, that rest on the upper ends of the side and front lids when lowered into closed position, as shown in Fig. 3. The left-hand front lid, the transverse front lid, and top lid are provided with suitable locking devices, by which they can belocked into closed position, while the end lid and right-hand front lid are locked in closed position by suitable locking devices in connection with the transverse front lid, as clearly shown in detail in Fig. at and now described.
To the front portion of the right-hand wall of the bench A is fastened a vertical cleat A in a vertical hole, in the upper end of which is guided a normally-projecting spring-actuated'locking-pin g, the lower operative end of which is adapted to be moved across a horizontal guide-hole a in the cleat by the transverse front lid E when it is swung up into closed position. Projecting from the free edge of the right-hand front lid D is a keeper cl, which when the lids D and D are closed moves into the hole a, so that when the lockin g-pin g is pushed down by closing the transverse front lid E the same will be projected space.
into the eye of the keeper (1, thereby locking the lids D and D.
The work-bench is provided with the usual accessories, the various tools being suspended in any convenient manner in the lower part, as well as in the end and top lids of the same, so that when all the lids are placed in closed position the bench and the tools are entirely inclosed, and thereby protected against dust and interference and any meddling with the same.
My improved work-bench and cabinet form a very convenient structure for woodworkers of all kinds, as all the parts can be closed up and the appearance of the same changed into a piece of furniture of attractive appearance that can be readily placed in any convenient It also forms a very convenient article for amateur woodworkers, to whom the ordinary work-bench is objectionable, owing to the inconvenience in placing the same in ordinary dwellings.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a work-bench, a series of drawers arranged below the same, a side lid hinged to the extended rear wall of the bench, an upright front lid hinged to the end lid, and means for locking the parts in closed position, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a work-bench, a series of drawers below the same, closing walls at one end and at the rear of the bench, a hinged vertical front lid at one side of the drawers, a side lid hinged to the rear wall, a
ranged on the vertical front lid and adapted to be locked by said pin, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing-as my invention I have signed my name in pres-- ence of two subscribing witnesses.
