Be it known that I, Jnssn SPURGEON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottumwa, in the county of VVapello and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calculating-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had .to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to calculating machines, and it has for one of its objects the provision of a new and improved form and arrangement of parts for effecting operations in multiplication and addition.
It is another object of my invention to improve devices of this type in sundry details hereinafter pointed out.
The preferred means by which I have accomplished my objects are illustrated in the accompanying drawings and are hereinafter specifically described.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 20, inclusive, in which corresponding parts are indicated by the same reference characters,20 indicates a base, rising from which is a frame 21. The greater portion of the frame 21 and the parts supported thereby are inclosed by a casing 22 of any suitable type.
Mounted in the 'framework 21 are a plurality of keys 23, in the present instance forty-five of such keys being shown arranged in five longitudinally-extending rows of nine each. Each of the keys 23 in the construction shown comprises a push-rod 24 having mounted thereon a finger-piece 25, a cylindrical barrel 26 in which said pushrod 24 is revolubly mountedfpins 27 fixed in said barrel, and a rock-shaft 28 fixedly connected in any suitable manner with the lower end of the barrel 26. In the construction shown the push-rods 24 are square in cross-section and are adapted to slide freely through bosses 29 carried by the casing but are held against rotation relative thereto. The push-rods 24 are revolubly connected with the barrels 26 by means of plates 30 secured by screws or in any other suitable manner to the barrels 26, which platesfit in circumferential grooves about the push-rods 24. The lower portions of the rock-shafts 28 are square in cross section and have slidably mountedupon their lower ends pinions 31, said pinions, in the construction shown having teeth about a portion only of their I the application of power to the pinions 31 for turning said pinions, the rock-shafts 28 are rotated, carrying with them the barrels 26, which turn relative to the push-rods 24, as above explained.
Coming now to the means for rotating of the adjacent cross-bar 34. There'are also provided short auxiliary levers 3940 mounted upon the base 20 by means of pins 4142, respectively, said levers having mounted thereon pinions 43-44 which mesh .with toothed portions of the cross-bars 34.
The levers 36, 39 and 40 are connected so as to swing in unison by means of a longitudinally-extending bar 45. As will be readily understood, upon a stroke of the lever 36 about the pivot point 37, the pinions 38, 43
and 44 will be rotated in unison, causing the slidably-mounted cross-bars 34 to move laterally in unison, causing a correspondingrotation of the pinions 31 and of the barrels 26 actuated thereby. In order to assist in causing the pinions 38, 43 and 44 to rotate in unison and to serve as far as possible to take up lost motion, a longitudinally-extending bar 46 is provided having toothed engage-.
ment with said three pinions.
Adjacent to each of the barrels 26 of the keys 23 are two slidably-mounted verticallypositioned bars 4748 provided with engaging-blocks 49, fixed thereon, adapted to be engaged by the pins 27 of said'barrels when the keys are depressed in the operation of the machine. Each of the bars 47 48 is mounted to slide upon the face of a frameplate 50, a plurality of such plates 50 being provided. As is clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 8, the pins 27 are spaced about the periphery of the barrels 26 at varying heights therealong, the arrangement of such pins upon the barrels being hereinafter described. As the barrels 26 are rotated through the medium of the lever 36, the series of pins 27 are brought successively into position to contact the engaging blocks 49 of the bars 4748. The barrels 26 thus constitute controllers or intermediate devices by which motion is transmitted to the bars 4748 when the keys 23 are operated. In order to indicate the proper position of the lever 36 for bringing any one ofthe pins 27 into precise alinement with the engaging-blocks 49, a graduated sector-plate 51 is provided,
extending laterally from the casing of the -mechanism,52 indicates brackets, extending from the front portion of the frame 21, having mounted thereon the number-indicating devices. Inasmuch as these devices are of the construction and arrangement as shown and described in United States patent to Horton, No. 1,016,501, it is believed that it will be unnecessary to describe such mechanism very much in detail. The mechanism comprises six number-devices, as indicated in Fig. 2, such devices being indicated by the numerals 53 to 58, respectively, each of such number-devices being in the form of a wheel, as illustrated in Fig. 9, with the numbers arranged about the periphery of the wheel, said wheels being mounted upon a shaft 59 supported by the brackets 52. Each of said numberwvheels is adapted to be rotated through the medium of a gear 60. Each of the gears 60, with the exception of that carried by the number-device 53, is adapted to be driven in clockwise direction in Fig. 9 through the medium of a pinion 61, a clutch 62, a pinion 63, and a toothed bar 64 which is moved longitudinally of itself by the longitudinally-extending bar 65 through the medium of an intermeshing pinion 66. The clutch 62 is arranged so that it is effective to turn the gears 60 upon the forward movement of the longitudinally-extending bar 65. Each of the gears 60, with the exception of that of the number-device 58, is also adapted to be driven in clockwise direction in Fig. 9
through the medium of a gear 67, a pinion 68, a clutch 69, a pinion 70, and a verticallypositioned toothed-bar 71 which is moved longitudinally of itself by a longitudinallyextending toothed-bar 72 through the medium of a pinion 73 which intermeshes between the bar 71 and the turned end 74 of the bar 72. The clutch 69 is of the type shown in Fig. 10, so arranged that the gear 60 is,turned in clockwise direction in Fig. 9 upon the rearward movement of the longitudinally-extending bar 7 2. Thus, when the keys are operated, the registering mecha' nism is, in proper cases, actuated both on the direct stroke of the keys and on their return stroke. This o curs in all cases except when the controller 26 of any key is turned to such position that it actuates only one of the two oars 4748. The numberwheels 53 to 58 are also provided with suit" able. carrying devices, whereby upon tl13 ?=3- tation of any one of said number-devices lever W of the said Horton patent construe tion, by a complete forward and backward stroke of which lever the number-devices are all brought to their zero-indicating position. Inasmuch as this clearing mechanism forms of itself no part of my present invention, it is believed that it is not necessary to further describeit herein.
Coming now to the means for actuating the longitudinally-extending bars G572, 76 indicates'a' pinion intermeshing between the bar 65 and one of the bars 47, and 77 indi cates a pinion intermeshing between the bar 72 and one of the bars 48. By the use of the pinions 7677, upon the downward movement of the bars 4748 actuated by the key 23 located therebetween, the bars 65 and 72 are both moved forward or to the left in Fig. 9. Each of the bars 65-72 has pivotally mounted upon its rear end a link 78, such links, in turn, being mounted upon the upper ends of bell-crank levers 79, the forward ends of which are yieldingly held in raised position by springs 80.
As is seen from the above description, each of the keys 23 is operatively connected with two of the 'number-devices53 to 58 whereby an operative stroke of said key is adapted to rotate said two number-devices, one of said number-devices being rotated upon the downward stroke of the key and the other number-device being rotated upon the upward stroke of said key as said key is moved upward by its spring 32 assisted bythe spring 80. It will also be seen that each of the number-devices is operativelyconnected with the keys of two different rows. In
Fig. 9-it will be seen that the numberdevice 57 isconn'ected with the key 23 shown in said figure throughthe. medium of the vertical bar. 64 and the loggitudinallyextending bar 65. Saidnumber-device 57 is also connected with the adjacent key 23 (not shown) through the medium of the vertical bar 71 (shown. partly broken away in said Fig. 9) together with the longitudinallyextending bar 72 (also not shown in said Fig. 9) which is connected with said vertically-extending bar 71, as above described.
Referring now particularly to Figs. 11 to 20 for a description of the several keys and the manner in which they 0 rate, the showing of Fig. 11 represents iagrammatically any one of the longitudinally-extending rows of keys. The black-faced numerals 1 to 9 in these figures represent the numerals found upon the finger-pieces'of the several keys as shown in Fig. 2. The barrel or controller 26 of each of the keys is shown as provided with a plurality of actuating pins, such as are indicated in theother figures by the numeral 27. -The light-faced numerals leading to the several pins are used to indicate the height at which the various pins are located on the barrel of the key. The pins uponthe right-hand side of the keys'in this figure are those which are adapted to be brought into engagementwith the engagingblocks of the bars 47, while the pins upon the left-hand side are those adapted to be brought into engagement with the engagingblocks of the bars 48. The light-faced numerals indicate that the pins are arranged at such a height upon the-barrels as to cause upon the depression of the barrel a movement of the bar 47 or 48 acorresponding number of units-distance, that is to say, such a distance as to cause the rotation of the number-wheel actuated thereby a corresponding number of steps. keys is shown in Fig. 11 in the position which such key holds when the lever 36 stands at its 1 36 is moved to its 2 position, each of the controllers is rotated to bring a difi'erent pin into operative position to engage the blocks 49 of the bars 47-48. If it were desired to find the product of 3 and 7, with the lever 36 in its 3 position the 7 1 key of the first or units row of keys wo ld be depressed,that is to say, the row of keys nearest to the clearing handle 75 in. Fig. 2. Upon such actuation of the 7 key the bar 47 would be moved one unit distance and the bar 48 would be moved two units distance, thus turning the numberwheel 58 one step in advance on the downward or direct stroke of the key, and the wheel 57 two steps in advance on the upward or return stroke of the key, giving a reading of 21. As will be readily understood and as will be seen from an inspection of Figs. 11 to 20, if the lever 36 were placed at its 7 position and the 3 key were depressed,

In the description hereinabove, all references to the readings and indications of the number-devices have been meant to apply in case the number-devices were cleared or reset before each actuation of a key. If such clearing were not performed, the machine would multiply in the manner above set forth but the results would be added in as a portion of the total reading rather than being indicated separately.
As will be readily understood, two or more keys of different rows can be operated at the same time; That is to say, in multiplying 3 and 25 the lever 36 would be set at its 3 position. The correct reading upon the number-devices can then be obtained either by depressing the 5 key of the first row and subsequently depressing the 2 key of the second row, or by depressing said two keys simultaneously.

' and the bars 47-48 adapted to be moved only through the actuation of the key, it will be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to this particular construction, except as hereinafter claimed, the essential point being that the keys and the parts actuated thereby shall be movable relative to each other, one or the other of said parts being arranged differentially so that as the relative position of said parts is changed a differential actuation of the key-actuated parts shall occur as described. \Vhile I have shown the keys or controllers 26 with the differentially-arranged pins 27 as being rotatable into theii' different operative positions and prefer to so embody my invention, it will be understood that I do not limit myself in this way, except as hereinafter specifi cally claimed, it being sufficient, so far as a differential controller movable'into different operative positions is concerned, that suitable adjusting means be provided by the operation of which the keys or controllers are shifted as desired to their different operative positions.

In. a calculating machine, the combination of a key comprising a cylinder. having graduated bearing parts, number-devices adapted to cooperate to indicate a number, means adapted to be actuated by the operation of said key through the medium of said graduated bearing parts for moving said number-devices, and means for rotating said key for bringing difi'erent bearing parts of the key into operative position relative to said key-actuated means whereby the key acts differentially in moving said numberdevices for indicating successive numbers of an arithmetical progression.
8. In a calculating machine, the combinatio'nof a key comprising a. cylinder provided with a plurality of pins. number-devices adapted to cooperate to indicate a number, means adapted to be actuated by the operation of said key through the medium of said pins for moving said number-de vices, and means for rotating said key for bringing different pins of the key into oper ative position relative to said ke -actuated means whereby the key acts differentially in moving said number-devices for indicating successive numbers of an arithmetical progression.
9. In a calculating machine, the combination of a key comprising a cylinder proyided with a plurality of pins spaced about its periphery at different heights therealong,
number-devices adapted to cooperate to indicate a number, means adapted to be actuated by the operation of said key through the medium of said pins for moving said number-devices, and means for rotating said key for bringing different pins of the key into operative position relative to said keyactuated means whereby the key acts differentially for moving said number-devices for indicating successive numbers of v an arithmetical progression.
10. In a-calculating machine, the combination of a key comprising a cylinder provided with a plurality of pins spaced about its periphery at different heights therealong, number-devices adapted to cooperate to indicate a number, means adapted to be actuated by the operation of said key through the medium of said pins for moving said number-devices, and means for rotating said key for bringing different pins of the key into operative position relative to said keyactuated means whereby the key acts differentially for moving said number-devices, the arrangement of said pins upon said cylinder being such that upon the operation of said key in successive operative positions as the key is rotated in one direction said numher-devices indicate the numbers of an increasing arithmetical progression.
11. A calculating machine, comprising registering devices, actuating mechanism therefor, and a plurality of keys for operating said actuating mechanism, each of said keys comprising a differential member adjustable to vary according to a predetermined series the extent to which said registering devices are actuated by each operation of its key.
12. A calculating machine, comprising registering devices, actuating mechanism therefor, a plurality of keys for operating said actuating mechanism, each of said keys comprising a diflerential member adjustable tovary according to a predetermined series the extent towhich said registering devices are actuated by each operation of its key, and means for so adjusting said differential members.
13. A calculating machine, comprising registering devices actuating mechanism therefor, a plurality of keys for operating said actuating mechanism, each of said 'lzeys comprising a differential member adjustable to vary according to a predetermined series the extent to which said registering devices are actuated by each operation of its key, and means for simultaneously and similarly adjusting all of said differential members.
14. In a calculating machine, the combination of a key, two number-devices adapted to cooperate to indicate a number, means. adapted to be actuated by the operatiomof said key for moving one of said number-devices, carrying means whereby the operative movement of said last-named numberde'vice through successive complete phases causes a corresponding movement of said other number-device, andother means likewise adapted to be actuated by the operation of said key for moving the last-named numher-device.
15. In a calculating machine, the combination of a key, two number-devices adapted to cooperate to indicate a number, means adapted to be actuated by the operative movement of said key in one direction for moving one of said number-devices, and other means adapted to be actuated by the operative movement of said key in the opposite direction for moving the other of said number-devices.
16. In a calculating machine, the combination of a key, two number-devices adapted to cooperate to indicate a number, two bars adapted to be actuated by an operative movement of said key, connections between one of said bars and one of said numberdevices whereby an operative movement ofsaid bar serves to give said number-devices an operative movement, and connections between the other of said bars andthe other of said number-devices whereby an operative movement of said last-named bar serves togive the number-device with which it is connected an operative movement.
17. .In a calculating machine, the combination of a key, two number-devices adapted to cooperate to indicate a number, two bars adapted to be actuated by an operative movement of said key, connections between one of said bars and one of said numberdevices whereby an operative movement of said bar in one direction serves to give said number-device an operative movement, and connections between the other of said bars and the other of said number-devices whereby an operative movement of said lastnamed bar in the opposite direction serves to give the number-device with which it is connected an operative movement.
18. In a calculating machine, the combi nation of a key, two number-devices adapted to cooperate to indicate a number, two
bars adapted to be actuated by an operative movement of said key, yielding means against the action of which said bars are moved by said key, connections between one of said bars and one of said number-devices whereby an operative movement of said bar against the action of its yielding means serves to give said number-device an operative movement, and connections between the other of said bars and the other of said number-devices whereby the return movement of said last-named barunder the influence of its yielding means serves to give the number-device with which it is connected an operative movement.
19. In a calculating machine, the combination of a key, a number-device, means adapted upon an operative stroke of said .key in one direction to give said numberdevice an operative movement, a second key, and means adapted upon an operative stroke of said second key in the opposite direction to give said number-device an operative movement. i
20. In a calculating machine, the combination of two keys, a number-device, yielding means tending to hold said keys against movement out of normal position, means adapted upon an operative strokeof one of said keys against the action ofsaid yielding means to give-said number-device an operative movement, and means adapted upon the movement of the other of said keys into normal position under the influence of said yielding means to give said number-device an operative movement.
21. In a calculating machine, the combination of a series of keys, yielding means tending to hold'said keys in normal posiion, a series of number-devices adapted to indicate respectively the units, tens, etc., of a number, means for each of said keys adapted to be actuated by an operative stroke of said'key against the action of said yielding means for giving an operative movement to that number-device which corresponds in the series of number-devices to said key in the series of keys, and means for each of the keys in said series adapted to be actuated by an operative stroke of said key into normal position under the influence of said yielding means for giving an operative movement to that numbendevice which is one step in advance in the series of number-devices. i
22. In a calculating machine, the combination.of a key, number-devices adapted to cooperate to indicate a number, bars at opposite sides of said key adapted to be actu ated by said key for moving said numberdevices, and means for rotating said key for bringing different parts thereof into operative position relative to said bars.
23. In a calculating machine, the combination of a key comprising two sets of'pins arranged thereabout, number-devices adapted to cooperate to indicate a number, bars at opposite sides of said key each of which bars is adapted to be engaged by one of the pins of one of said sets and to be actuated thereby for moving said number-devices, and"' means for rotating said key for bringing diflerent pins into operative position relative to said bars.
24. In a calculating machine, the combination of a key comprising two sets of pins each set arranged circumferentially upon one-half the periphery of the key, numberdevices adapted to cooperate to indicate a number, bars at opposite sides of said he each of which bars is adapted to be engaged by one of the pins of one of said sets and to be actuated thereby for moving said number-devices, and means for rotating said key for bringing different pins into operative position relative to said bars. 25. In a calculating machine, the combination of a key comprising two sets of pins each set arranged circumferentiallyupon one-half of the periphery of the key, number-devices adapted to cooperate to indicate a number, means adapted to be actuated by said key through the medium of said pins for moving said number-devices, and means for rotating said key to successive positions forbringing different pins into operative position for moving said number-devices for indicating successively the numbers of an increasing arithmetical progression, one
set of pins being arranged to effect the propersuccessive movements of the keyactuated means for indicating successively the units and the other set of pins being arranged to efi'ect the proper successive movements for indicating successively the tens.
26. In a calculating machine, the combination of a vertically-movable key compris-, ing two sets of pins each set arranged circumferentially upon one-half of the periphery of the .zey, number-devices adapted to cooperate to indicate a number, means adapted to be actuated by said key through the medium of said pins for moving said number-devices, and means forii'otating said key to successive positions for bringing different pins into operative position for moving said number-devices for indicating successively the numbers of an increasing arithmetical progression, one set of pins being arranged at the proper heights for effecting the proper successive indications of units and the other set of pins being arranged at the proper heights for effecting the proper successive indications of tens.

In a calculating machine, the combination of a vertically-movable key comprising two sets of pins each set arranged circumferentially upon one-half of the periphery of the key, number-devices adapted to cooperate to indicate a number, means adapted to be actuated by said key through the medium of said pins for moving said number-devices, and means for rotating said key to successive positions for bringing difierent pins into operatiy e position for moving said numbex devices for indicating successively the numbers of an increasing arithmetical progression -oneset of pins being arranged to effect proper successive indications in one column and the other set of pins being arranged to effectproper successive indications in the next-higher column.

In a=-calculating machine, the combination of a plurality vof keys, a plurality of bars one for each key adapted to be actuated by said keys, a plurality of pinions one for each bar having toothed engagement with said bars, a longitudinally-extending toothed bar engaging said pinions, and numher-indicating means actuated by the move- .ment of said last-named bar.

In a' calculating machine, the combination of registering mechai'iism, means comprising arotary controller for actuating said registering mechanism, and means for rotating said controllerto vary the extent to which the registering mechanism is actuated by a single operation of said actuating means."
42. In a calculating machine, the combination of registering mechanism, means comprising a plurality of controllers for actuat ng said reg stering mechanism, and means for simultaneously and similarly adjusting all of said controllers to vary the extent. to
which the registering mechanism is actuated by a single operation of one of said controllers.

In a calculating machine, the combination of registering mechanism, a controller, a pair of actuating members positioned on opposite sides of said controller and adapted to cobperate therewith for actuating said registering mechanism, and means for adjusting said controller to vary the extent to which the registering mechanism is actuated by a single operation of said controller.

In a calculating machine, the combination of registering mechanism, a contr0lieo mechanism, said keys being mounted in fixed situations in said frame, and differential mechanism adapted to be adjusted to vary according to a predetermined. series the extent to which said registering devices are actuated by each operation of the keys.

In a calculating machine, the combination with a frame, registering devices and actuating mechanism therefor, of a plurality of keys for operatingsaid actuating mechanism, said keys being mounted in fixed situations in said frame, differential mechanismadapted to be adjusted to vary according to a predetermined series the extent to which said registering devices are actuated by each operation of the keys, and means for simultaneously and similarly ad-. justing the differential mechanism in reference to each of the keys.

In a calculating machine, the combination of registering mechanism, a plurality of keys adapted to be operated separately to actuate the registering mechanism, each of said keys comprising an intermediate device adapted to be adjusted to vary the extent to which the registering mechanism is actuated by the operation of such key, and
. means for adjusting the intermediate devices of all the keys in unison.

In a calculating machine, the combination of registering mechanism, a plurality of keys adapted to be operated separately to actuate the registering mechanism, each of-said keys comprising an intermediate device adapted to be adjusted to vary the extent to which the registering mechanism is actuated by the operation of such. key, and means for simultaneously and equally adjusting the intermediate devices of all the keys.

In a calculating machine, the combination of registering mechanism, a plurality of keys adapted to be operated separately to actuate the registering mechanism, each of said keys comprising an intermediate device adapted to be adjusted to vary the extent to which the registering mechanism is actuated by the operation of such key, and means independent of the operation of the keys for adjusting the intermediate devices of the several keys.

In a calculating machine, the combination of registering mechanism, a plurality of kevs adapted to be operated separately to actuate the registering mechanism, each of said keys comprising a rotary intermediate device adapted to be adjusted to vary the extent to which the registering mechanism is actuated by the operation of such key.

In a calculating machine, the combination of registering mechanism, a plurality of keys adapted to be operated separately to actuate the registering mechanism, each of said keys comprising a rotary intermediate device adapted to be adjusted to vary the extent to which the registering mechanism is actuated by the operation of such key, and means for rotating the several intermediate devices in unison.

In a calculating machine, the combination of registering mechanism, a plural- .ity of keys,a differential device associated with each of said keys and adapted to be actuated by the operation thereof, and a pair of actuating members cooperating with said differential device to actuate said registering mechanism.

In a calculating machine, the combination of registering mechanism, a plurality of keys, a differential device associated with each of said keys and adapted to. be actuated by the operation thereof, a pair of actuating members cooperating with said differential device to actuate said registering mechanism, and means for adjusting said differential devices to vary the extent to which the registering mechanism is actuated by the operation of the keys.
54. A calculating machine, comprising registering mechanism, a key movable alternately in opposite directions, and a plurality of devices operated by said key for actuating consecutive parts of 'said registering mechanism.
55. A calculating machine, comprising registering mechanism, a key movable alternately in opposite directions, and a plurality of devices operated by said key for actuating consecutive parts of said registering mechanism on the direct and on the return strokes of said key respectively.
56. A calculating machine, comprising registering devices, a key movable alternately in opposite directions, and meansactuated by the operation of the key to actuate said registering devices on the direct stroke of the key and also on the return stroke thereof.
57. A calculating machine, comprising registering devices, a key movable alternately in opposite directions, and a plurality of devices actuated by the operation of said key to actuate consecutive parts of said registering devices respectively on the direct and on the reverse strokes of said key.
58. A calculating machine, comprising registering devices, a key,'a differential controller, and means actuated by said controller for advancing consecutive parts of said registering devices complementally.
59. A calculating machine, comprising registering devices, a key, a differential controller, means actuated by said controller for advancing consecutive parts of said registering devices complementally, and means for varying the extent to which said controller operates said registering devices according to a predetermined series.
60. A calculating machine, comprising registering devices, a plurality of keys, a
plurality of differential controllers associated with said keys, and a plurality of actuating devices associated with each of said controllers and actuated thereby to advance consecutive portions of said registering devices complementally.

A calculating machine, comprising registering devices, a plurality of keys, a plurality of differential controllers associated with said keys, a plurality of actuating devices associated with each of said c0ntrollers and actuated thereby to advance consecutive portions of said registering devices complementally, and means for varying the operation of the several controllers according to a predetermined series.
62. A calculating machine, comprising registering devices, a plurality of keys, a plurality of differential controllers associated with said keys, and a plurality of actuating devices associated with each of said controllers and actuated thereby to advance consecutive portions of said registering devices complementally, one of the actuating devices associated with each controller being arranged to actuate the reg istering devices upon the direct stroke and the other on the return stroke thereof.
