Be it known that I, JOHANNES Boss CoNzELMANN, a citizen of the German Em- )ire, residing at Oustinettingen, in the ingdom of Wurttemberg, Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful row of only-nine keys are necessary. In-
order to render this possible according to the present invention there is interpolated between the adding apparatus of known construction with transfer mechanism, and the axle controlled by the shift keys, which carriesthe decimal shifting wheels, a special axle upon which likewise decimal gear.

In the accompanying drawing, the invention s illustrated as follows Figure 1 is a longitudinal section on the 7 line A--B of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a partial view from above. Fig. 3 is a section on the line C-D of Fig.2.
In a casing 1 is arranged a counting apparatus of known construction upon an axle 2, the counting rows 3 whereof are visible through peep holes 4 in the lid of the casing. The counting mechanism which in the fexample described is arranged for seven- -,place figures possesses a transfer mechanism 5, 6 of known construction and ten-toothed wheels 7. The wheels 7 are connected rigidly with the counting rollers 3 and are provided upon one side with ten pins 5 and upon the other with two pins 6.
The pins 6 engage-the gear wheel a after each complete revolution of the wheel 7 or the counting rollers 3. The toothed wheel a revolves loosely upon the axle b and is rigidlyconnected with a wheel d provided with ten teeth by means of the hub c. This wheel 03 is positioned in front of the pins 5 of the next higher order wheel 7 and engages with the same. After each complete revolution of a counting roller 3, together with the wheel 7 caused by the pins 6, the wheel or, together with wheel d, are shifted around a tooth, the latter switches the next following wheel 7 and the counting roller 3 one point farther away, and the decimal shifting mechanism results therefrom.
Under the counting mechanism there is supported an axle 8 which has nine ten- toothed wheels 9, 10 keyed upon it, of which the part 9 can be brought into engagement with the numeral key 11, while the part 10 stands vertically under the counting mechanism wheels 7 so that the intermediate wheels 13 which are displaceable upon the intermedikeys 11, which are provided consecutively with figures from 1 to 9 which can engage in the parts 9 of these wheels. The keys 11 work. in sleeves 14, which are pivotally connected at 15 with the rear wall of the casing and they are under the influence of springs 16 in the sleeves 14, which automatically restore them to their normal positions. The front ends of the keys 11 stand under the influence of springs 17 which have the pur-- pose of immediately raising the keys 11 af ter the shifting is completed and of brin ing them out of engagement with the teet of the wheels 9 before the springs 16 can come'into action, so that a turning back of I the counting mechanism is impossible.

In order that also the last used key 21 after the calculation is ended shall be again moved back,- there is arranged a displaceable bar 33. against which the depressed keys 21 rest with the lower end of their rojections 32, so that they can be p. back fromtheside wall of thecasing 1 into their original position by the raising of the bar 33 running in slot guides 34. A spring 35 tends continuously to restore the bar 33 to its normal position.
.Theoperation of the apparatus is'as follows :.Let us assume that the followin row of figures is to be added Before commencing the addition of the units row, the key 21 numbered 1 is depressed so that the corresponding intermediate wheel 13 enga es with the corresponding counting wheel of the counting mechanism and also with the shift wheel 9, 10 or its part 10 lying beneath it. the connection between the counting mechanism and the axle is operated. Hereupon the numeral keys 11 are actuated consecutively corresponding to the numbers of the units row of the figures to be added, whereupon in the peep'hole 4 theresult 111 appears. Before commencing the addition of the tens, the key 21 which bears the indication 2 is depressed which has for result that the next intermediate wheel 13 is enga and at the same time the previous whee 13 is compulsorily put out of action by the pin 32 and the arm-30. (lonsequently for the next following addition of the tens row, the
last figure 1 of the first obtained result 111 remains unaltered in the unit place. The addition of the tens row follows in the same manner as that of the units row, by
actuating the numeral keys 11. The result of this addition is the figure 44 and conseuently there appears in the peep hole the gure 551. Hereupon the key 21 which bears the indication 3 is depressed whereby the wheel 13 belonging to the hundreds row is put into gear. The preceding wheel on Thereby the other hand is put out of gear in the manner described so that on the addition of the hundreds, the figure 5 in the tens space remains unaltered. The addition of the hundreds row gives the value 16 so that in the peep hole 4 the figure 3151 now appears.

1. In an adding apparatus, in combinzv tion, f counting "mechanismcomprising an axle having toothed wheels mounted there- 'on, a second axle, pairs of toothed wheels mounted on said second, axle, keys for rotating said pairs of wheels, an intermediate axle, intermediate toothed wheels slidingly mounted thereon, said wheels being adapted to bemoved into and out of intermeshing relation with said first mentioned and said second mentioned wheels, and keys for actuating said intermediate wheels.

In an adding apparatus, in combination, counting mechanism comprising an axle having toothed wheels mounted thereon, a second axle, pairs of toothed wheels mounted on said second axle, keys for rotating said pairs of wheels, an intermediate axle, intermediate toothed wheels slidingly mounted thereon, said wheels being adapted to be moved into and out of intermeshing relation with said first mentioned and said second mentioned wheels, keys for actuating said intermediate wheels, and means for restoring any one of said keys to its normal position.
