Be it known that I, FREDERICK PEITER, a citizen of the United States, resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas and Air Mixers, of whichthe following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
Myinvention relates to gas and air mixers for gas-burning apparatus, its object being to provide such a mixer which will be eflicient in its use and which will be capable of adjustment for the purpose of regulating combustion within the chamber.
A further-object is to provide a gas and air mixer particularly adapted for use in apparatus in which the fuel-gas is discharged downwardly into the chamber from above.
The said invention consists of means hereinafter fully described and particularly set forth in the claims.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain means embodying my invention, the disclosed means, however, constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be applied In said annexed drawings :Figure 1 is anaxial section of a gas-burning apparatus which includes in its structure combustionchambers having vertical axes. Fig. 2 is a section taken upon the plane indicated by line IIII in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken upon the plane indicated by line III III in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section taken upon the'plane indicated by line IVIV in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section similar to that shown in Fig. 1 and illustrating a modified form of my invention. Fig. 6 is a section taken upon the plane indicated by line VI-VI in Flg. 5.
In the illustrated form of the device emof these chambers is provided with a circular opening 3 through which extends downwardly a fuel-nozzle 4. This opening communicates with a vertical fuel-duct 5. In the form of device shown inFigs. 1 nd into the duct 5 and that portion of the latter ad acent thereto is formed with an inwardly projecting annular shoulder 10. This shoulder is located slightly above the upper end of the nozzle-part 6 and upon it rests the flange portion 7 of the nozzle which is formed with the central cylindrical opening 11 co-axial with the duct 8.
The lower extremity of the nozzle is intersected by a transverse duct 12 communicating with the main nozzle duct 8 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the width of this transverse duct is substantially equal to the diameter of the duct 8. As shown this diameter is somewhat less than the distance between the upper portions of the corbeling as shown in Fig. 1.
Discharging in horizontal planes above the lower extremity of each nozzle and upon opposite sides of a plane passing through the nozzles axes and also passing through the air-duct 2, are two auxiliary transverse air- ducts 13, 13. The inlet ends of each of these ducts communicates with the air-duct 2 as shown in Fig. 1, so that it will be seen that four such auxiliary transverse air-ducts communicate with the latter, one pair discharging into each of the combustion-chamhere 1, Fig. 3. j
In order that thenozzles may be readily removed and replaced from above, the diameters of the two portions 6 and 7 are made somewhat less than the diameters of the adjacent parts of duct 5.
In the operation of the above described apparatus, the fuel-gas passes downwardly through the ducts 5, through the nozzles 4 and is discharged from the lower end of the latter. The flange portion 7 of each noz zle prevents the leakage of the gas through the annular space between the nozzle-portions 4 and the adjacent parts of the ducts 5. In addition to discharging downwardly from the end .ofthe nozzles, the gas also passes laterally through the two branches latter chipped ofl, thereby shortening the nozzle of the transverse duct 12 where it meets the altered by chipping out the refractory material for that purpose, whereby regulation of combustion may be obtained, as will be read.- ily understood by those skilled in the art. In this manner it will be seen therefore, that the location of the lower extremity of the main duct 8 of each nozzle, may be altered Without changing the length or point of sup port of the lower portion of the nozzle.
In the modified form of nozzle shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the flange portion 7 is made integral with the lower portion 6, the corbeling 9 being dispensed with. As in the firstdescribed structure, the said flange portion 7 rests upon the annular shoulder 10. When it is desired to change the location of the mixing zone in this form of the nozzle, the is Withdrawn and the lower end and changing the location of the discharging end thereof.
In the first form of'nozzle described, as before noted the shoulder 10 is located slightly above the upperend of the nozzle part 6. This feature is adopted for the urpose of preventing the flange-portion 7 rom coming into contact with the upper end of the nozzle portion 6, thereby permitting this flange portion always to rest snugly in contact with theshoulder 10 and thus prevent leakage.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- 1. In a fuel-duct construction for gasburning apparatus, the combination with a combustion-chamber; a gas duct commimicating with the top of said chamber; a fuelnozzle extending into said chamber and supported in said duct; an air-supply duct; and two branch ducts communicating with said air-supply duct and communicating with the interior of said combustion-chamber upon opposite sides of a plane passing through the axis of said nozzle.
