TofaZZi whom it. moyconcern.:
Be it known that we, GEORGE R. Bays, re-y siding at Michigan City, in the county of Laporte and State of lndiana, and JOHN T. BAYs, residing at Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Vrench; and we do hereby declare the following to be .a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a wrench of improved character, and which consists of a hollow member having a wrench jaw, there being a movable wrench jaw having its shank passing through the hollow member, said shank having teeth to coperate with projections or lugs on the interior of the hollow jaw for holding the movable jaw in adjusted position.
Another feature of the invention is that the hollow member and the movable jaw have removable jaw blocks, so that the nut jaw blocks may be substituted in lieu of the wrench jaw blocks.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved wrench constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing nut jaw blocks. Fig. 3 is a sectional view longitudinally, through the wrench. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on line 4.--4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6 6 of Fig. 2 showing parts in elevation.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the two members of the wrench. The member 1 is movable and is provided with a head 3 having a hammer pole 4 at one end provided with nail eX- tracting claws 5, while the other end is constructed with a removable jaw block 6. The shank 7 of the member 1 has its opposite edge portions provided with V- shaped teeth 8 and 9. rThe shank 7 extends through the channel 10 of the member 2, so that the teeth 8 and 9vrespectively will engage-theteeth 12 and 13 of the channel 10'of the member 2, thereby holding the member 1 in dierent adjusted positions. The channel 10 of the member 2 extends entirely through the jaw end of the member 2. 1t is to be noted that the wall 14, as shown at 15 terminates below the jaw portions 16 of the member 2, and the wall 17 of the channel is curved oif at an acute angle to the plane of the wall 147 and by this construction, and the terminating of the wall 14 below the jaw portions of the member 2 permits the shank of the member 1 to be disposed on an angle as shown in dotted lines in the drawing, in order to Adisengage the teeth 8 and 9 from the teeth 12 and 18, so that the member 1 may be adjusted. When the member 1 is adjusted as desired, and the teeth 8 and 9 are engaging the teeth 12 and 13, the edge (which has the teeth 8) of the shank of the member 1 engages flat against the wall 14 of the member 2, and is gripped in such position by the hand of the operator, thereby enabling the jaws of the wrench to secure a firm grip on the object to be turned. The member 2 consists of two parts, riveted together as shown at 18 and 19. rllhe member 2 is provided with removable jaw blocks 20 and 21, one having teeth (which bite into a pipe when turning the same) the other being plain as shown at 22 for engagement with a nut, and one adapted to be substituted for the other. The head of the member 1 also has correspondingly constructed jaw blocks, so that one may be substituted for the other.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:-
ln combination, a pair of wrench members, one consisting of a head provided with a wrench jaw and a shank portion, said shank portion having its opposite edges provided with V-shaped teeth', the other member being elongated and channeled longitudinally its entire length and having one side edge open substantially its full length, said channeled member having a wrench jaw to coperate with the first jaw, the wall of the channel member adjacent its jaw, and the opposite wall of the channel member having teeth arranged diagonally opposite each other to be engaged by the teeth of the shank of the first member, one edge of the shank of the first member adapted to engage flat against the wall of the closed edge portion of the channeled member, the wall of the closed edge portion of the channel member terminating below the jaw of the channel member, the wall of the channel member adjacent'its jawbeing curved outwardly at an acute angle t0 the opposite wall of the channel member, which together with the terminating of said opposite wall below the jaw of said channel member permits the shank of the rst member to be adjusted on an an-V gie for the disengagement of said teeth.
n testimony whereof we haveY signed our names to this speecation in the presenceof two subscribing witnesses.
