APPLICATION FILED JULY 2. $915 Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK X. BIBEAULT, 0F WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
HEEL.
Application filed July 2, 1915.-
To (17 Z who-m it m (13 concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK X. BIBEAULT, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Yaterlmry. in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heels; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 an outer face view of a rubber heel constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a view in vertical section. Fig. 3 an outenface view of the sections slightly separated. Fig. 4 an inner face view. Fig. 5 an outer face view of a heel embodying my invention and comprising three sections. Fig. (3 illustrates means for applying the sections of a heel.
This invention relates to an improvement in heels for boots and shoes, and particularly to rubber heels.
As is well known some persons wear the heels at the back; some at one side, and some at the other.
The object of this invention is to construct a rubber heel in sections either of which is removable without disturbing the others, and provide means whereby these sections are suitably supported and secured in place; and the invention consists in'a rubber heel having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as shown in Figs. 1. 2. 3 and 4 of the drawin s I form the heel in four sections comprising a front 9., back 3, and sides 4 and 5. These sections are triangular in general form, and the abutting edges of each part are beveled to form V-shaped channels 6 which meet at substantially the center of the heel. Preferably and as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, each section will also be provided with a transverse V-shaped groove 7. The inner faces of these sections are inwardly curved from the outer edges to triangular blocks 8, 9, 10' and 11 forming a chamber 20 in each section, as shown in Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1915. Serial No. 37,718.
Fig. of the drawings. These blocks when the edges of the sections are abutted, form a rectangular support at the center of the heel, permitting the edges of the sections to closely fit the edge of the heel to which the sections are applied. The chambers 20 form vacuum'chambers which assist in holding the edges of the sections in place.
Instead of forming the heel from four sections, it may be formed from three sections 17, 18 and 19, as indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, in which case the support. at the center will be triangular instead of rectangular. As shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, the edges of the blocks 8, 9, 10 and 11 might be curved so as to form a round plug or support at the center instead of a recv tangularor triangular support. As a means for securing the sections to the heel, I preferably employ nails 12 as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, the main portion of the nail, being driven into a leather heel 14,
while the outer end projects beyond the face inserted; or if either the side sections wear down they can be replaced by new ones; or the outside section of the heel of one shoe can be interchanged with the inside section of the other shoe so as to produce a pr etically new wearing surface for each eel without the use of new parts. The beveling of the edges of the sections assists in bringing the parts into line with each other and tend to even up or level the section when a new one replaces one worn down. Beveling at the edges and the transverse grooves also tend to prevent slipping, although as indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the transverse grooves may be omitted, if desired.
I claim 1. A rubber heel comprising a plurality of angular sections the inner faces of which which unreduced portions together form a the abutting outer edges of each section becentral support. ing beveled, whereby a groove is formed be- 2. A rubber heel comprising a series of tween the sections. sections the inner faces of which are par- FRANK X. BIBEAULT; 5 tially recessed leaving an .unreduced por- Witnesses:
