Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedvNov. 9, 1915.
Application filed September 9, 19,14. Serial No. 860,853.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER MEYER, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Clamps, and do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings, forming part of the same, to be a full, clear, concise, and exact description of the invention and the best mode contemplated to apply said principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions and enable any person skilled in the art to which it appertains or with which it is most nearly connected to make, construct, and use the same.
This invention relates primarily to a holder or clamp for holding various kinds of saws for the purpose of sharpening them, and relates more particularly to a portable holder` and clamp, which can be secured to any convenient object.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a simple and rigidmclamp for securely and firmly holding a saw for the purposeof sharpening the teeth thereotl by filing or grinding. y
The invention comprises a main body, a flexible abutment, means to connect said flexible abutment and main body, a clamping plate slidably mounted upon said main body and cooperating with said flexible abutment to firmly and securely hold or clamp the saw to be sharpened, means comprising a compound lever arrangement to actuate said clamping plate, and means attached to said main body to secure the entire device to any suitable and convenient object.
The annexed drawings and description thereof set forth in detail certain mechanical forms which embody the principles of this invention. It is, however, to be understood that this invention is not limited to these particular forms.
The novelty of this invention will be read ily understood from the drawings, which show constructions embodying the invention in its preferred form, and from the following descriptions thereof, and is more specically pointed out and distinctly claimed in the claims annexed to said specifications.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the invention secured to a wooden member such as a work bench or the like, showing a saw in dot and dash clamped in position for sharpening. Fig. 2
is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, showing a. section of Fig. 2 at a a, to clearly illustrate the construction of the device. Fig. l isa perspective view of a detachable clamp to coperate with the saw clamping device for the purpose of securing same to formed to a U shape and secured to the ends et is a flexible abutment 5.
A clamping plate 6 is slidably mounted on Y said main body 1 to cooperate with said flexible abutment 5. Two pins or rivets 7 are secured in the main body 1 and coperate with slots 8 in said clamping plate, which slots form the guides for. the latter.
A supporting member 9 is securedto said main body 1 and provides a means whereby the device canV rest upon any suitable object such as the portion of a ,work bench 10 as shown, and the main body can be secured to said work bench by means of' the wood screws 11. The supporting member 9 also serves as a fulcrum for the clamping lever 12 which is fulcrumed at 13. A link 14: is pivotally mounted at one end l5 upon the clamping lever 12 and at the other end 16 to the clamping plate 6.
The operation of the device thus far described is as follows: The clamping lever l2 is drawn away from the clamping plate 6, thus moving said clamping plate 6 away from the flexible abutment 5 and permitting the insertion of the saw to be sharpened between the said two members and when the clamping lever 12 is moved in the reverse direction or toward the said clamping plate 6, the saw is firmly clamped. noted that the power exerted by said clamping lever is gradually increased as the three fulcrums approach a straight line, and becomes practically locked in such position. The purpose of the flexible abutment 5 is to obtain a contact between the clamping plate 6 and itself along the entire length. This is accomplished by having the saw clamped in the center or in line with the three fulcrums first, when further pressure exerted by the clamping lever 12 will press the center of the flexible abutment forward It will be and permit the ends of the clamping plate 6 to come in contact with the saw.
detachable clamping arrangement is also provided to eliminate the necessity of having the device secured permanently by means of the wood screws ll and consists ot channel iron member 17 formed as shown in Fig. el, the end 19 of which is arranged to engage with a slot 19 in the main body l. The end 23 ot' said detachable clamp is formed to go beneath the supporting member lO. The said two members form the upper and lower members for clamping' the device to a work bench or the like. A. clamping screw 2O is provided in said end 23 of the detachable clamp, having, at the upper end thereol an enlarged portion 2l to engage with the work bench. To the ,lower end ot' said clampingscrew'QfO is pivotally attached an operating lever 22. The purpose or" this pivotal operating lever is that when same is in dotted position shown 1n Fig. B, the clamping screw can be quickly operated whereas when it is in position shown in Fig. el, a means is provided whereby considerable power may be exerted upon. the clamping screw.
Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. In combination with a T shaped main body, a slot provided in the stem portion of said T' shaped member, a clamping plate slidably mounted thereon, an abutment, connections between said main body and abutment, a .lever arranged pivotally upon said main body to actuate said plate toward and from said abutment, whereby the saw to be sharpened is securely and firmly clamped between said clamping plate and abutment, a detachable clamping device comprising a member arranged to engage with said slot in said main body, and a clamping screw provided'in said member to secure the entire screw clamping device in anv convenient position.
2. In combination with a T shaped main body, a slot provided in the stem portion of said T shaped member', a clamping plate slidably mounted thereon, an abutment, conneetions between said. main body and abutment, a lever arranged pivotally upon said main body to actuate said plate toward and from said abutment, whereby the saw to be sharpened is securely and firmly clamped between said clamping,` pla-te and abutment, a detachable clamping device comprising a channel iron member arranged with a bend at each end, one end to `engage with said slot in said main body, and the other end provided with a clamping screw.
