Specification of Letters Patent.` Patntd NOYfg, 1915i.`
Application filed May 1.4, 1914.` Serial No. 838,560.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN citizen of the United States, residing at Bentonville, in the county of `Benton and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension Car-Steps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements inY railway passenger or other cars, more particularly auxiliary steps or extension-steps therefor. f v
The invention has for its object to facilitate ingress and egress to and froin, espe cially passenger cars.
-A further object is toprovide for'readily Y adjusting the step-extension for use and' disfio posing it out of use. Y y
A still further object is to carry out these ends in a simple, economical and expeditious manner. y
The invention therefore consists of an auxiliaryor supplemental step or Vstep-eX- tension adapted to have slidable, or extensibleaconnection with the regular car-steps,
also means for the application or adjustmentof said auxiliary step or step-extension to the latter, substantially as hereinafter disclosed and defined bythe appended claim. 30
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made as to the detailed construction and varrangement of parts without departing from' the spirit of the invention, and in which drawings L Y Figure l is an elevation of a passengercar with my invention applied thereto, or
rather to tlie'steps thereof, in extended andV unextended positions, respectively. Figs. 2
' and 3 are front views of the invention as assembled with the car-steps, detached from the car, the invention being in unextended and extended positions, respectively. Fig. l is a detached perspective View of the vinvention. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken' Y on the line lr-et of Fig. 4.
In carrying out my invention, I suitably contrive a supplemental or auxiliary step, or step-extension, designated generally as 1, in approximately U-shaped outline, as clearly indicated in Fig. 4, the step proper 2 and the side or lateral forming portions thereof 3 N. STOKES, a
:iliary step or step-extension in being at right angles to ,eachA other.V The side or lateral portions 3, in providing for a sliding or extended action, are of suitable length for the purpose-and adapted to'be applied .to the sides of thecar-steps A, said side portions Shaving inwardly extending iianges or guides 5 along their longitudinal,
edges, to overlie .orl engage the corresponding portions ofthe-car-steps` A. Said side portions are, provided, ,centrally about, l z with ,longitudinal slots which receive studs or projections ,7 upon the sides'. of 'the carauxiliary or supplemental steps,` or step-extension -is adapted, as already indicated, to
have longitudinal or sliding movement, in
order to provide for .thelowering thereof,
Vfor facility of the passengers of the car in entering and leavingV the latter'.
A suitable lever or handle-equipped crank shaft 8 is journaled or supported in, and
extends through the `sides of the car-steps,-
near or atthe upper end thereof, the handle vor lever ofsaid shaft being designatedas 9.
One arm of end 10 of the shaft 8. and the lever or handle 9 thereof are connected tO the side Or lateral portions 3 of the auxiliary or supplemental step or step-extensionV by rods or linlrsll, in twin, pivoted to saidk parts, the connection between said rods and steps', well down `near or Vat thelower ends, and upon which studs'or projections the saidside-portions 3 being adjacent the upper ends of the latter, whereby it will be Observed-that byk suitablyactuating said lever, said step-extensi.on..may bev lowered within easy Vor convenient stepping distance between tliecar and the street .for the passengers, in leaving and entering the car, as before indicated. It will be further observed that, afteriising the auxiliary step or stepextension and in again elevating it to initial or former position, by suitably vdisposing the y lever in dead-center alinement withgthe rods 11, the desired locking action is obtainedfor the suitable retentionv of the auxv elevated position until further needed.
I vclaini'i:.-
A device of the type described, including an approximately U-shaped step-'forming member fitted to slide upon the lower end of an extension-step Of a passenger-carryingvehicle, a bail or U-shaped lever with its bail forming portion fulcrumed in said extension-step and links having their lower ends In testimony whereofl I affix my signature connected to sind slldable step-foinnng 1n presence of two Wltnesses.
member, the opposite ends of said links be- JOHN NEWVTUN STUKES. ing connected to one arm of the bail forming .Vtnesses:
portion of said lever and to the lever proper, Y J. G. MCANDREW,
respectively. GEO. COTTON.
