CLGSTIRE FOR RECEPTACLES.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Fatented Nov. 2, 1915.
Application flledFebruary 4, 1914. Serial No. 8%.,655.v
' To all whom t may Concern Be it known that I, ALBERTA, C. ELLIOTT,
l a citizentof the UnitedStates, 'residing at in sifters andparticularly to a cut off forclosing the delivery end of the sifter when necessary to prevent waste of the material fan-d fore-other advantages.
The main object of the present invention is the provision "of a cut off including hingedly connected leaves adapt-ed to be pivotally supported upon the bottom of the sifter body and to be operable to or from a closed position to seal or open the bottom of the sifter.
The invention inthe preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in whichz* Figure l is a bottom plan of the improved sift-er, the leaves being shown closed. Fig. 2 is asimilar view, the leaves being shown open. Figi 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. l.
In carrying out the present improvement,-
I secure upon the bottom of the ordinary hand sifter l a 'guide ring 2, said ring being secured at diametricallyopposite points by rod connections at 3, whereby the rib is spaced from the proximate edge of the sifter body, as shown. Duplicate semi-circular lips 4 areepivotally'supported upon one of the rod connections 3, the mounting of the lips presenting their diametric edges in adjacent relation,Tl so that when the lips are spaced relation, whereby the leaves may be opened bysimply pressing the handle portions together.
A metallic ring 8 is secured within the body l 'of the sifter proper below the screen therein, the edge of said ring being adapted to be projected into a plane coincident with the ring may actas a scraper to remove all material from the surface of the lips in the' opening operation of the latter.
The invention ,is particularly usefulffor ysifters of the type with which it is shown,
as in the use of such sifters the material isgenerally poured or dumped into the sifter and the latter transported to a table or otherA support for the pan into which the material is to be sifted. During this transportation there is frequently considerable leakage of the material which with the present improvement is impossible. Furthermore, the present improvement permits the sifter to be used as a positive measuring vessel, it being obvious that with the leaves in closed posi'- tion, a closed receptacle is provided which can be used for measuring quantities of Inaterial.
What is claimed is the upper surface of the leaves 4.whereby rlfhe combination with a receptacle, of rod connections secured to the bottom thereof at dianietrically` opposite points,y an annular ring carried by the rod connections and disposedbelow and in spaced relation withthe' bottom of the receptacle, lips pivotally mounted upon one of the rod connections and movable between the guide ring and the' bottom edge of the receptacle, said lips being movable inl opposite directionsv to open or close the bottom of the receptacle, the
meeting edges of the lips being formed to overlap when in *closed position to maintain a tight connection for -the bottom of the receptacle.. v
In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. -v
ALBERTA C.. ELLIOTT.
